The Industrial Revolution: 18-19Th C
The Industrial Revolution: 18-19th c. Displaced from their farms by technological developments, the industrial laborers - many of them women and children – suffered miserable living and working conditions. Romanticism: late 18th c. - mid. 19th c. During the Industrial Revolution an intellectual and artistic hostility towards the new industrialization developed. This was known as the Romantic movement. The movement stressed the importance of nature in art and language, in contrast to machines and factories. • Interest in folk culture, national and ethnic cultural origins, and the medieval era; and a predilection for the exotic, the remote and the mysterious. Guidelines for Using the Annotated Bibliography of Prose Narratives Adapted for Children from Shakespeare' s Plays 1807-1998 Scope of Bibliography: The Annotated Bibliography seeks to document different English versions of prose stories, retold from Shakespeare' s plays for the purpose of introducing children to Shakespeare, and published as children' s literature, including the nineteenth century chapbooks and penny-dreadful magazines. Anything that falls out of this category, i.e. text-books, theatre-guides and adult-books, will not be included. However, Lambs' tales were originally written for children. Although some editions of Lambs' tales were published as adults' books, they have been treated as children' s books, simply because they contain illustrations. -
The Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace The Crystal Palace was a cast-iron and plate-glass structure originally The Crystal Palace built in Hyde Park, London, to house the Great Exhibition of 1851. More than 14,000 exhibitors from around the world gathered in its 990,000-square-foot (92,000 m2) exhibition space to display examples of technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. Designed by Joseph Paxton, the Great Exhibition building was 1,851 feet (564 m) long, with an interior height of 128 feet (39 m).[1] The invention of the cast plate glass method in 1848 made possible the production of large sheets of cheap but strong glass, and its use in the Crystal Palace created a structure with the greatest area of glass ever seen in a building and astonished visitors with its clear walls and ceilings that did not require interior lights. With emphasis not just on their heritage and conservation but their potential as well, public parks could contribute not only to the social and recreational life of our urban areas, but also to the enhancement of environmental sustainability and the enrichment of the biodiversity of urban areas. A new design approach would be desirable for the management of our historical green spaces and to encourage a wider range of people to return to them. is paper comments on park use studies, contemporary park use investigations and student design works for parks in the future, using Paxton’s methods/approach/ideas for inspiration in the development of our historic city parks. And examines to what extent Paxton’s design ideas are applicable in the 21st century. The call number for the collection is PN6111.P5 © 2013 Amherst College Archives and Special Collections Page 1 Plimpton Collection of Dramas INTRODUCTION THE PLIMPTON COLLECTION OF PLAYS by Curtis Canfield Originally published in the Amherst Graduates’ Quarterly, May 1932 Mr. George A. Plimpton, ’76, recently presented to the college a large collection of material relating to the English and American theatre of the nineteenth century. More than 1200 plays are represented in the collection in addition to numerous playbills, programs, libretti, histories, and after-pieces, as well as an autographed photograph of Edwin Booth as Richelieu. The collection seems to have been a part of the extensive theatrical library of Mr. Edward Boltwood of Pittsfield, whose father was born in Amherst in 1839 and moved to Pittsfield in 1870. Mr. Boltwood, although an active member of the Berkshire bar, made the theatre his avocation and found time to write a number of small pieces for the stage, one of which is included in the present collection. He was also instrumental in establishing the William Parke Stock Company in Pittsfield, and continued his connection with this company by writing reviews of its plays.
