Company History
company History The history of Boston Pizza is as diverse as the menu items it serves up. Started in Edmonton, Alberta in 1964 when Greek immigrant Gus Agioritis opened Boston Pizza and Spaghetti House, the concept quickly grew in popularity and a franchise was born. One of the first franchisees was former R.C.M.P. officer, Jim Treliving, who opened the doors to his first restaurant in Penticton, British Columbia in 1968. It was through this franchise that he met chartered accountant George Melville, who assumed the position of Treliving’s business consultant and eventual business partner. Within a decade, the two men built a chain of 16 restaurants in B.C. giving them the hands-on experience that would eventually lead to their future roles as the franchisors of Boston Pizza International. In 1983, Treliving and Melville purchased Boston Pizza International Inc. (BPI) and its chain of 44 restaurants from then owner Ron Coyle. The pair immediately divested their restaurants to franchisees, and established systems and operating standards that would set the stage for sustainable growth across the country. An expansion in to Eastern Canada was always on Treliving and Melville’s radar and was brought to life in September 1998 when the first location opened in Ottawa, Ontario. Today there are more than 110 restaurants in Ontario, 25 locations in Quebec and 18 in Atlantic Canada. As the company continued to grow in Canada, Treliving and Melville set their sights south of the border and in 2000 began expansion of the brand to the United States. Originating in Dallas, Texas, and operating under the banner “Boston’s The Gourmet Pizza”, the brand continues to grow in the United States and Mexico. -

ZB7.2 STAFF REPORT To: Board of Management From: Jennifer Tracey, Senior Director Marketing, Communications & Partnerships Subject: 2016 ADVERTISING EXPENDITURE Date: 2016-02-25 Summary: This report outlines the proposed media plan and expenditures related to the 2016 advertising campaign as provided for in the 2016 Operating Budget. The paid advertising will complement the public relations and event strategy to ensure we are reaching our target audiences in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond, and that we are communicating the right messages. Recommendations: It is recommended that the Board approve the following: 1. Expenditures to reimburse Public Inc. for any outsourced production costs related to advertising programs as required for the Toronto Zoo brand, not to exceed $229.0 thousand, plus HST; and, 2. Expenditures with ZenithOptimedia Canada Inc. for media purchases related to the 2015 advertising campaign, not to exceed $956.0 thousand, plus HST. Financial Impact: There are no financial implications related to approval of these recommendations as the related advertising expenditures are included in the Operating Budget for 2016. Background: The Toronto Zoo set out the following objectives which link directly to the goals in the recent Strategic Plan, to drive the Marketing, Communications & Partnerships planning for 2016: 1. Meet or exceed 1.325 million visitors with a positive net revenue; 2. It is unquestionable that the hospitality sector has been among the hardest hit by COVID-19, with our businesses being required to shut down in the fight against the spread of the virus. The option of working from home does not extend to hospitality workers. Our livelihoods and those of our employees have been decimated in the blink of an eye. The hospitality industry is a significant economic sector; it represents far more employees than the entire airline industry, and yet there are no reports of bailouts or additional support for our workers, who are most certainly among the most vulnerable. Let us be clear: most of us do not have shareholders. We feed our families and pay our mortgages with the income from our businesses. The financial pain about to be felt by hospitality employees, owners and operators is beyond comprehension. With over 1 million hospitality jobs lost across the country last week alone, there can be no doubt that the rebound and survival of our industry in Canada will be crucial to our country’s overall economic recovery. That includes reciprocal support to the tourism, conference & event, arts & entertainment and retail sectors. The hospitality sector’s recovery will also be essential to the survival of our food supply system including farmers, purveyors, and food manufacturers. -

As usual, the Foundation office has been buzzing with activity. We wrapped up our 2016 Gala, whichthrive raised a staggering $435,000+ for the purchase of a brand new, modern digital x-ray unit for the hospital’s medical imaging department, and the plans are coming together for the ER expansion and new residential care and hospice facility. Needless to say, it has been all hands on deck! Speaking of the Peace Arch Hospital Gala, we decided to shake things up for 2016 and create a whole new experience for our guests, some of whom come year after year. Our Vintage Vegas themed evening was a huge success complete with Elvis, the Rat Pack and a special appearance by Marilyn Monroe who sang her rendition of Happy Birthday to our outgoing board chair, Art Reitmayer, as only Marilyn can. Look for pictures of this fun night of philanthropy on page 6. I would also like to introduce you to our new board chair, Siobhan Philips, who took the reins just last month. She is a dedicated volunteer and passionate fundraiser who has a long history of giving back to her community. Check out pages 12 and 13 for a profile on Siobhan. Lastly, we feature two extraordinary donors in this issue – Westland Insurance who recently made a gift of $500,000 to the ER expansion project and the late Margaret Rodgers, a wonderful friend of the Foundation who dedicated her final birthday to fundraise for Peace Arch Hospital. -
