6 7 As fascinating today as the day it was unveiled: With its character-defining mergence of design and technology, the Junghans Meister series has remained unperturbed by all other trends and fashions over the decades. The first mechanical Meister watches were developed way back in the 1930s. They enjoyed their heyday in the 1950s and 60s with the most exquisite calibres. From 1950 onwards, we also produced wristwatch movements in chronometer quality, which led to us becoming the third largest manufacturer of chronometers in the world by 1956. The first automatic chronometer calibre J83 followed in 1957, one of the most beautiful of its kind. And the story doesn’t end Junghans there: The longer time marches on, the more the revered Meister designation of this legendary series is justified. In 1946, plans are already in place for the first Junghans chronographs to be worn on the wrist: the in-house developed calibre J88, a hand- wound chronograph with 19 stones, ratchet wheel and intricate Breguet hairspring. In 1949 following a three-year development period, the robust calibre is ready to be incorporated into a whole array of chronographs – this includes the service watch of the pilots from the newly established German Federal Armed Forces.
