Perry Mason - Shyster, gumshoe, and amateur electrician!By Whistlers MomBetween 1933 and his death in 1970, this author wrote 82 books in the iconic "Perry Mason" series. Although he wrote other books (the Bertha Cool/Donald Lam series is actually my favorite) it was the shrewd, hard- hitting lawyer and his devoted secretary Della Street who became instantly recognizable figures all over the world.THE CASE OF THE CURIOUS BRIDE was published in 1934 and strikes me as well-written and well plotted, but dated. The huge popularity of the series puzzles me. It was in competition with the classic noir mysteries of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and Gardner's writing (while competent) isn't in the same class. I think it can be explained by the fact that Gardner's books, while undeniably hard-boiled and having an edgy West Coast feel to them, were rather sanitized versions of this genre. You could give your Grandma a copy of the latest Perry Mason for Christmas. Sam Spade or Philip Marlowe might have caused the old gal to have a heart attack. Perry Mason was a tough competitor, but gentlemanly and a member of an honored profession, which private detective work isn't and never has been. And the constant presence of Della Street gives the books a gentler, more feminine feel than other noir mysteries. Two things struck me as funny. One of Paul Drake's operatives uses the ruse of identifying himself as a bootlegger to gain entry to a suspect's hotel room. Doubtless Gardner used this idea in his many 1920's BLACK MASK stories, but this book came out in 1934 and Prohibition was repealed in December of 1933. If the guy was thirsty, nothing was keeping him from bellying up to the bar like the rest of us. Also, Chapter 15 has Mason pacing his office while discussing the case with Della "his thumbs thrust in the armholes of his vest." It's been a while since I saw a lawyer wearing a vest. The most prominent criminal lawyer in MY town is famous for not wearing socks. Do vest armholes come down low enough to make this physically possible, not to mention comfortable? It's a mystery.Books in this series are being sporadically offered (in no pattern that I can ascertain) on sale for $1.99 and I'm picking them up as they are. An enjoyable walk down Memory Lane plus I'm interested to see how the plots, characters, etc change over the almost 40-year period in which they were written. I don't know of another series that ran that long being written by the same author.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Loved itBy Princess LizzzThis is Perry Mason and Erle Stanley Gardner at their best. The plot is clever, Mason is even more clever, and there isn't a dull moment. The protagonist, Rhoda Montaine, is human enough to be both fallible and likable. Definitely worth the read/purchase!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wow!By G. C. LevineWhile clearly written early in the career of the talented attorney, it still shows its talent. In fact I found it to be fun read and one I'll probably read again and again. Oddly enough the house that he rented is still a popular style, as is, (One family instead of a multiple one) and can be found in some parts of this country, still. Fun read and will keep people guessing to the end. After con man Greg Moxley married Rhoda Lorton, he took her money and flewmdash;only to have his plane crash. Years later, Rhoda weds millionaire scion Carl Montaine. But now Moxley has turned up alive and wellhellip;.with plans to pocket the Montaine fortunemdash;or else make Rhodarsquo;s bigamy public. Desperate to protect the good name of Montaine, Rhoda seeks out Perry Mason. But before Mason can reel in Moxley, somebody murders the scheming blackmailer. In a case that abounds in lethal twists, Perry Mason suddenly finds himself on a collision course with a cold-blooded killer. About the AuthorErle Stanley Gardner (1889-1970) is a prolific American author best known for his works centered on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason. At the time of his death in March of 1970, in Ventura, California, Gardner was "the most widely read of all American writers" and "the most widely translated author in the world," according to social historian Russell Nye. The first Perry Mason novel, The Case of The Velvet Claws, published in 1933, had sold twenty-eight million copies in its first fifteen years. In the mid-1950s, the Perry Mason novels were selling at the rate of twenty thousand copies a day. There have been six motion pictures based on his work and the hugely popular Perry Mason television series starring Raymond Burr, which aired for nine years and 271 episodes. As author William F. Nolan notes, "Gardner, more than any other writer, popularized the law profession for a mass-market audience, melding fact and fiction to achieve a unique blend; no one ever handled courtroom drama better than he did."Richard Senate further sums up the significance of Gardner?s contribution: "Although the character of Perry Mason is not unique as a 'lawyer-sleuth,' he is the first to come to anyone's mind when it comes to sheer brilliance in solving courtroom-detective cases by rather unconventional means. Besides 'Tarzan,' 'Sherlock Holmes,' 'Superman' ? 'Perry Mason' qualifies as an American icon of popular culture in the twentieth century."Gardner's writing has touched a lot of people including a number of high profile figures. Brian Kelleher and Diana Merrill say in their 1987 book, The Perry Mason TV Show Book that Harry S. Truman was a fan and that it is rumored that when Einstein died, a Perry Mason book was at his bedside. They further describe that when Raymond Burr met Pope John XXIII, the actor reported that the pontiff "seemed to know all about Perry Mason." Federal judge Sonya Sotomayor frequently mentions how Perry Mason was one of her earliest influences.Starting with his first book, Gardner had a very definite vision of the shape the Perry Mason character would take:"I want to make my hero a fighter," he wrote to his publisher, "not by having him be ruthless to women and underlings, but by creating a character who, with infinite patience jockeys his enemies into a position where he can deliver one good knockout punch."
