Gardner somehow manages to pull off his first Mason novel without needing it. The story The Case of the Velvet Claws: A Perry Mason Mystery #1he had moved to Oroville, CA. His parents could not afford to send a second son to college, so he worked in a legal office as a clerk reading law. Mason always fights for his clients to the end no matter what, but his fees are not cheap in this book his total was well into thousands and we are talking about the year Usually there is no more than one dead The Case of the Velvet Claws: A Perry Mason Mystery #1 in a book, but the plot is always complicated - enough to make Agatha Christie proud. In this novel a young woman asked Mason to protect her from the blackmail. Della Street instantly takes a dislike of Mason's new client claiming she is a typical gold-digger I am using a modern term for this and not to be trusted. It turned out she was right as the woman in question did everything she could to personally involve Mason in her problems hoping he would be better motivated to help himself and by extension her. As I mentioned already this is the first book of the series and as such the main characters are not as developed as in the later books and some of the regulars are not mentioned at all. For this reason I almost gave 3 stars to the book, but the plot twists were good and plentiful enough for me to warrant 1 extra star. One more note: for the love of all that is holy do not read the blurb for The Case of the Velvet Claws: A Perry Mason Mystery #1 book. It gives away something which while revealed early still was unexpected surprise for me. You have been warned. View all 8 comments. A good solid mystery, but the formula used in later books with the big courtroom finale is not here. I can't believe I missed reading this one when I was on my Perry Mason binge back in the s and s. In a way this was good too, because we want to enjoy the mystery and who gives two figs about how the characters were. But in th Perry Mason is a gruff, unafraid, confident and cunning man, with a few principles of his own. But in the long run, when you look at the characters and they look more 'people' than 'characters'it helps attaching to the story. I think this is the difference between other crime writers and Agatha Christie. On the other hand, the plot was too good, the writing was good enough, and finally the protagonist was not a detective professional or amateurbut a lawyer, which was a change for the good. There are several clever plot twists and I didn't guess the guilty party before the mystery was revealed. This book differs from later Mason in that there is no courtroom scene where Perry's cross examination provides the revelations necessary to solve the case, although Perry in effect cross exams a few people in the course of investigating the case. One wonders why someone would allow themselves to be cross examined voluntarily while not in court and perhaps that is one of the reasons ESG later made the courtroom the scene of much of the dialogue. I'll continue with this series, in chronological order when availabilty allows. Years ago I read many Perry Mason novels and still have 6 or 7 paperbacks laying around in a cardboard box that I will raid now and again. View 2 comments. Mason is far more a detective so far. And his main antagonist is Sgt. Holcomb and over the past few books it is obvious that he has some mental issues. Good mystery but not my favorite of the series so far by far.

Bainbridge Lawyer as critic Swinburne University of Technology Jason Bainbridge Lawyer as critic: analysing the legal thriller through the works of John Grisham, Erle Stanley Gardner and Harper Lee Abstract: Focusing on selected ‘classic’ novels by John Grisham, with reference to how they are informed by the earlier works of Erle Stanley Gardner and Harper Lee, this paper explores how these authors, writing in the legal thriller genre, present their lawyer protagonists as critics of both the law and the legal systems of which they are a part. Both Gardner’s and Grisham’s writings have been the focus of much criticism from legal scholars who suggest they are unduly critical of lawyers and provide outlandishly happy endings. This article challenges these criticisms by analysing how Gardner’s and Grisham’s narratives explore notions of law’s contingency on crime and materiality. In this way the article concludes that these narratives offer a way of understanding how just practitioners can operate in an unjust system and therefore constitute a powerful interrogation of how law operates. Biographical note: Jason Bainbridge is Professor and Chair of Media and Communication at Swinburne University of Technology. He has published widely on popular cultural representations of law and justice in print, on film and on television, media convergence, merchandising and material culture. He is co-author of the textbook Media and Journalism: New Approaches to Theory Practice (3rd ed, OUP, 2015) and is currently working on a monograph around media franchises. F A scantily-clad woman claims she’s got amnesia, and can’t remember a thing about the jewel smuggling or the murder. The Case of the Glamorous Ghost ERLE STANLEY GARDNER © 1955 1 CHAPTER 1 It was Della Street, Perry Mason’s confidential secretary, who first called the lawyer’s attention to the glamorous ghost. “Why the grin?” Mason asked, as Della Street folded a newspaper and handed it to him. “This should interest you.” “What is it?” “A ghost that people saw last night out at Sierra Vista Park, a very glamorous ghost. A seductive ghost. It should make a case you’d be interested in.” Mason said, “You’ve already interested me.” He took the newspaper Della Street had handed him and read in headlines: SEXY SPOOK STARTLES SPOONERS GIRL GIVES CHASE WITH JACK HANDLE The clipping had been written up in a light vein, a combination of news and humor. The story as reported read: Last night was a night of witchery. The moon was full and fragrant wisps of breeze gently rustled the trees and greenery. George Belmont, 28, of 1532 West Woodwane Street and Diane Foley were sitting in their parked car, looking at the moon. Suddenly a beautiful wraith, apparently in the nude save for a fluttering diaphanous covering, drifted out of the shadows toward the car. According to George, the wraith was making the motions of a classical dance. Diane, outraged, described the same occurrence to police with far less imagery—a difference in viewpoint, no doubt. “We were sitting there talking,” Diane told Officer Stanley of the park patrol, “when a girl appeared in little or nothing and deliberately started vamping my boyfriend.

Perry Mason - Shyster, gumshoe, and amateur electrician!By Whistlers MomBetween 1933 and his death in 1970, this author wrote 82 books in the iconic "Perry Mason" series. Although he wrote other books (the Bertha Cool/Donald Lam series is actually my favorite) it was the shrewd, hard- hitting lawyer and his devoted secretary Della Street who became instantly recognizable figures all over the world.THE CASE OF THE CURIOUS BRIDE was published in 1934 and strikes me as well-written and well plotted, but dated. The huge popularity of the series puzzles me. It was in competition with the classic noir mysteries of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler and Gardner's writing (while competent) isn't in the same class. I think it can be explained by the fact that Gardner's books, while undeniably hard-boiled and having an edgy West Coast feel to them, were rather sanitized versions of this genre.
