Stoically Sapphic: Gentlemanly Encryption and Disruptive Legibility in Adapting Anne Lister Sarah E. Maier and Rachel M. Friars (University of New Brunswick, Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada & Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada) Abstract: Anne Lister (1791–1840) was a multihyphenate landowner-gentry-traveller-autodidact- queer-lesbian, a compulsive journal writer who lived through the late-Romantic and well into the Victorian ages. While her journals have proven to be an iconographic artefact for queer and lesbian history, our interest here is in the public adaptations of Lister’s intentionally private writings for twenty-first-century audiences as found in the film The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister (2010) and the television series Gentleman Jack (2019–). Our discussion queries what it means to portray lived queer experience of the nineteenth century, how multimedia translate and transcribe Lister’s works onto screen, as well as how questions of legibility, visibility and ethics inevitably emerge in these processes. Created, written and co-directed by Sally Wainwright (“Happy Valley,” “Last Tango in Halifax”), and starring BAFTA Award winner Suranne Jones (“Doctor Foster,” “Save Me”), GENTLEMAN JACK tells the story of a woman who had a passion for life and a mind for business, and bucked society’s expectations at every turn. Set in the complex, changing world of 1832 Halifax, West Yorkshire – the cradle of the evolving Industrial Revolution – GENTLEMAN JACK focuses on landowner Anne Lister, who is determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by reopening the coal mines and marrying well. Anne Lister on Gentleman Jack: Queerness, Class, and Prestige in “Quality” Period Dramas
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 2397–2417 1932–8036/20210005 The “Gentleman-like” Anne Lister on Gentleman Jack: Queerness, Class, and Prestige in “Quality” Period Dramas EVE NG1 Ohio University, USA This article examines the significance of queerness to class and prestige illustrated by the series Gentleman Jack (BBC/HBO, 2019–present). Although previous scholarship has discussed LGBTQ content and network brands, the development of “quality” television, and the status of period (heritage) drama, there has not been significant consideration about the relationships among all these elements. Based on the life of the 19th-century Englishwoman Anne Lister, Gentleman Jack depicts Lister’s gender and sexual nonconformity—particularly her romantic interactions with women and her mobility through the world—as a charming, cosmopolitan queerness, without addressing how this depended on her elite status. The cachet of GJ’s queer content interacts with both the prestige of the period genre and the BBC’s and HBO’s quality TV brands, with the show illustrating how narratives in “post-heritage” drama can gesture toward critique of class, race, and nationality privileges while continuing to be structured by these hierarchies. This article points to new avenues for theorizing how prestige in television is constructed through the interaction of content, genre, and production contexts. I hope that you find the following both informative and entertaining, and that it assists you in planning your trip to Halifax (and the surrounding area). First, do note that I call this the Anne Lister / Ann Walker Tour, and not the Gentleman Jack tour. You will get all you want to see of the important things connected to Gentleman Jack, but my aim is to give you a tour of present-day Halifax, with all sorts of great stuff that was part of the real Ann(e)s lives. All connected to the series,but not necessarily presented in the series. However, I cannot start without saying a word about… Gentleman Jack I’m assuming that 99% of you reading this are here because of the series. Simply put, in all my 6+ decades on this earth I’ve never seen anything like it. As the wonderful duo from the “Shibden After Dark” podcast, Leanne Mertzman and Mary Schwartz put it, I didn’t even know I needed this. As a gay woman, I’ve spent a lifetime trying to shoehorn my feelings and responses into all the various forms of entertainment delivered to me through books, movies, television and music, disregarding pronouns and gender and, well, just making it work for my own emotions and life experiences. But now that I’ve seen Gentleman Jack I cannot deny its impact on my point of view. Gentleman Jack is the very first thing I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing without translating it. -

We get a good look at the clergyman as he peers up at New House: this is 45-year-old THOMAS AINSWORTH, who is dressed in mourning. MR. PRIESTLEY steps out of the other side of the chaise and comes round to join the Reverend THOMAS AINSWORTH. MR. PRIESTLEY wears a mourning band too. MR. AINSWORTH What a delightful house! Despite her shy, awkward manner ANN WALKER seems utterly delighted to see ANNE LISTER. But she feels herself to become inarticulate; it’s the effect ANNE LISTER has on her. ANN WALKER Please! Come in. Sit down. ANNE takes in the huge, elegant, light-filled room. The furniture and the decor and everything about it smacks of wealth. The only difference between now and the last time ANNE visited, is that ANN WALKER owns all of it. ANNE LISTER D’you know, I haven’t been in this room for years. ANN WALKER It was after my mother died. You visited us. ANNE LISTER Was it? ANN WALKER dismisses the servant with a discreet gesture. -

HOUSEBODY, SHIBDEN HALL. DAY 27. CONTINUOUS. 16:45 2 (AUTUMN 1832) Determined not to be seen, ANNE glances through to the kitchen (which appears to be empty), then heads for the stairs. She hears voices from the dining room - 3 INT. DINING ROOM, SHIBDEN HALL. DAY 27. CONTINUOUS. 16:46 3 (AUTUMN 1832) We glimpse (very fleetingly as it’s ANNE we’re interested in) MR. ABBOTT still holding court with MARIAN (who nods in agreement at everything ABBOTT says), and with an increasingly disenchanted/bored JEREMY and AUNT ANNE LISTER - MR. ABBOTT I don’t believe the Reform Act went far enough. I’m not by inclination a radical, but the fact is people are becoming radicalized, whether people like us are reconciled to it or not, and those of us that do perhaps live in the past need to see which way the wind’s blowing or - you watch - there’ll be more trouble than we know what to do with. -

Process Paper How we chose our topic Our group, after brainstorming ideas, came to the consensus that we would do something on queer history, since it was something, we were all at least a little interested in. At first, we thought we might do stonewall, but, after scrolling through a page of significant queer figures in history, the name Anne Lister caught our eye and we decided that this woman was more interesting. How we conducted our research Since Bernice actually does not need to do NHD (it was her choice to do it), only Beverly and Makayla turned in the research sheets, although we all did research. Mr. Murphy (the person in charge of NHD for our grade) had us turn a certain number of sources incrementally as time went by, and that helped us pace ourselves. How we chose the performance category and created our project Originally, we all just knew we wanted to do a performance and we were also generally into theatre, so we started thinking about a musical; That was decided against later because of the impending workload that would include. Over time we developed our script by meeting together in shared classes or at each other’s houses, during that same time we worked together on planning the set and costumes. We met at the library and created a script 13 pages long, then we went home and practiced our lines individually. We went to thrift stores together to gather costumes and props, and Beverly worked from home to design and build our set. -
