Summary The Kazungula Bridge Project consists of the construction of a bridge across the Zambezi River between Botswana and Zambia, as well as the improvement of border facilities situated near the crossing. The main objective of the Kazungula Bridge is to replace the ferry service between the two countries, which suffers from slow traffic clearance as a result of limited carrying capacity. The bridge will form an important part of the trade infrastructure of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African continent. The construction of the Kazungula Bridge would enhance transport operations along the regional north-south corridor, which links the mineral-rich regions of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Botswana and the port of Durban in South Africa. In light of its importance, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) commissioned a study by Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultant. The study, published in March 2001, confirmed the technical and economic feasibility the project. The total cost for the Kazungula Bridge is estimated at US$ 70 million, with an additional US$ 30 million required for the border control facilities. Nippon Koei and Oriental Consultants have estimated that the construction would take 4 years, excluding engineering studies. -

GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ZAMBIA GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA SADC NORTH-SOUTH TRANSPORT CORRIDOR IMPROVEMENT THE KAZUNGULA BRIDGE PROJECT GENERAL PROCUREMENT NOTICE The Governments of Zambia and Botswana have received a loan from the African Development Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of a bridge and other facilities at the Kazungula border crossing between Zambia and Botswana. The project has also received a grant from the EU-Africa Infrastructure Trust Fund through association with the African Development Bank for specific technical assistance activities. The Kazungula Bridge Project lies on the north-south transport corridor, a vital trade route serving major trade-dependent economies within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), such as Zambia and Botswana. Other beneficiaries of the corridor include Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, DRC, South Africa and Mozambique. The primary objective of the project is to significantly reduce transit time at the Kazungula border thus mitigate border uncertainties and associated high transport and trade cost. The project provides vital transport infrastructure on the corridor that: (i) facilitates easy access for intra and inter-regional trade; (ii) facilitates easy access to international markets through connectivity with major sea ports; (iii) contributes to maximising the operational efficiency of the corridor, and (iii) promotes social and economic integration of the two countries. An environmental impact assessment was recently completed to assess the potential impacts this development might have on surrounding areas. This EIA was inadequate in its study of the wetland area called Cassandra Farms. Analysis of the trees and vegetation in the area showed that the area was a mixed woodland dominated by sickle bush, an encroaching species that flourishes in degraded environments. There were also protected tree species that were present in the location of the proposed new border post. -

The research was commissioned by ZIPAR under the mandate of the Road Sector Programme Support 2 – Institutional Support Component of the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA). In commissioning this research, ZIPAR partnered with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications (MTWSC) 2 Zambia Institute for Policy Analysis and Research | www.zipar.org.zm Executive Summary The Zambian road network is undergoing significant improvements which will increase the total length and improve the condition of some of the existing sections. Among the major projects going on are those encompassed by the Link Zambia 8000, Lusaka-Copperbelt Corridor, and Pave Lusaka 400. The Link Zambia 8000 programme for construction and rehabilitation of road infrastructure is expected to increase access to markets, enhance social inclusion and reduce travel time and cost to the benefit of local communities and the whole economy. The Programme has so many projects to be implemented in three phases. Our report presents an assessment of the importance of different road sections and corridors (“projects”) prioritized based on transportation efficiency, accessibility and socio-economic characteristics. To do that, a simplified nation-wide travel demand model (TDM) coupled with a post-processor tool for project evaluation was developed. A TDM is used to support decision- making in the development of different transport facilities and land uses. -

Regional integration, in simple words, is about cooperation and economies of scale. SADC Member States have agreed to co-operate by pooling their resources together and implement transboundary projects with greater impact, and more benefit for their citizens. Some of these projects are featured in this second edition of the SADC Success Stories. The SADC Success Stories Edition is one of our communication tools to reach out to SADC citizens and enhance awareness about the positive impacts of our protocols, agreements, policies and strategies. In 2016/17, a team of experts travelled the SADC region to collect stories that highlight the recorded achievements and successes in implementing SADC regional development and integration agenda. The stories cover achievements in the infrastructure, trade and industrialisation, climate change, finance, peace and security, water management, agriculture and transfrontier conservation sectors. The team’s mission included trips overland, by sea and air in order to paint an accurate picture of how SADC regional integration programmes are changing the lives of SADC citizens for the better. -
