Parmi les émissions qui seront disponibles, on compte The Wire, The Sopranos, Sex And The City, Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Big Love, Entourage, Oz, Rome et Deadwood. The past year in news, entertainment and online media reminds us that our stories are what continue to drive equality forward. When four states brought marriage equality to the election FROM THE PRESIDENT ballot last year, GLAAD stepped forward to help couples across the nation to share messages of love and commitment that lit the way for landmark victories in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington. Now, the U.S. Supreme Court will weigh in on whether same- sex couples should receive the same federal protections as straight married couples, and GLAAD is leading the media narrative and reshaping the way Americans view marriage equality. Because of GLAAD’s work, the Boy Scouts of America is closer than ever before to ending its discriminatory ban on gay scouts and leaders. GLAAD is empowering people like Jennifer Tyrrell – an Ohio mom who was ousted as leader of her son’s Cub Scouts pack – to share their stories with top-tier national news outlets, helping Americans understand the harm this ban inflicts on gay youth and families.

One of the exceptions is ratings plagued CNN. It was up 55%, thanks to election coverage, to a 0.8 HH rating. That’s still nowhere near competitor Fox News’ 2.0 rating (up 42% vs Nov ’11), with the news net tied with USA for the #2 spot in prime among cable nets. MSNBC’s Nov ratings soared 73% to a 1.1 for the month, also ahead of CNN. If reports are true and former NBCU CEO Jeff Zucker takes on the CNN pres role, he’s got some catching up to do. On the plus side, “Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien” had its best month since launching in Jan, “Erin Burnett Outfront” had its strongest month since launching in Oct ’11 and “AC360” at 8pm had its best month since launching in Aug ’11. Cable’s first place prime fin- isher for Nov was ESPN. It scored a 2.3 HH rating, down 15% from last year. TNT bucked the downward trend, with NBA basketball helping its HH rating rise 17% to a 1.2. Last year, the NBA lockout delayed the start of the season until Dec 25. Through its first 7 game telecasts, the NBA on TNT is averaging a 1.8 US HH rating and more than 2.6 mil- lion total viewers— that’s +6% compared to the first 7 games last season.

Good Character: Reality Television Production as Dirty Work Abstract Audiences, critics, and academics have raised significant moral concerns about reality television. The genre is commonly criticized for being exploitative, harmful, and fake. By extension, reality TV workers are morally tainted, seen as dirty workers of questionable character. This dissertation describes the sources of moral taint in reality television production and how production workers dispel this taint—making their work acceptable and even glorious to themselves and others—through everyday micro-level interaction. The data for this study comes from approximately 2 years of ethnographic observation at 2 reality TV production companies, attendance at 2 reality TV industry conferences, and interviews with 83 respondents, including reality TV production workers, television network executives, and people who auditioned to be on reality shows. Findings focus on the development process, during which production companies generate ideas for new television shows and pitch those ideas to television networks. First, I describe the development process and three significant moral dilemmas that workers face at this initial stage of production: creating negative representations (e.g.

  • AMC Puts New Focus on Drama
AMC Puts New Focus on Drama 10.10.2014 Chris Hardwick and Kevin Smith are the last ones standing at AMC after a big move shifts the network's programming toward mostly scripted fare. AMC has canceled several reality shows in favor of putting a larger priority on drama, leaving only Hardwick's Talking Dead and Smith's Comic Book Men in its unscripted slots. Current unscripted series Game of Arms, Small Town Security and Freak Show have all been canceled, as well as some projects being developed, including a late-night series from Smith and an on-air adaptation of Hardwick's Web series, All-Star Celebrity Bowling. AMC based the decision on previous drama success stories Breaking Bad and Mad Men, shifting its programming focus on trying to find the next big scripted series that can take their place on the schedule. "Scripted originals are at the core of the AMC brand," said an AMC spokesman. "Iconic shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have driven AMC's evolution into a must-have television network. We are proud of our efforts in unscripted programming and the unique worlds we have been able to introduce, but in an environment of exploding content options for viewers, we have decided to make scripted programming our priority." The Walking Dead remains the top show on cable and has recently been renewed for a sixth season on the network, and it has recently signed deals for two seasons of Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, Xbox project Humans and martial arts series Badlands.

Go to Dissertation Series. Studies on the Social and Political Constitution of the Economy Abstract A multi-sectorial regime of protection including international treaties, conservation and security measures, demand reduction campaigns and quasi-military interventions has been established to protect rhinos. Despite these efforts, the poaching of rhinos and trafficking of rhino horn continue unabated. This dissertation asks why the illegal market in rhinocer- os horn is so resilient in spite of the myriad measures employed to disrupt it. A theoretical approach grounded in the sociology of markets is applied to explain the structure and functioning of the illegal market. The project follows flows of rhino horn from the source in southern Africa to illegal markets in Southeast Asia. The multi-sited ethnography includ- ed participant observations, interviews and focus groups with 416 informants during four- teen months of fieldwork. The sample comprised of, amongst others, convicted and active rhino poachers, smugglers and kingpins, private rhino breeders and hunting outfitters, Afri- can and Asian law enforcement officials, as well as affected local communities and Asian consumers.
