ICA Theme Profile If You're Lucky Enough to be Irish, You're Lucky Enough! St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Created by: Richard Mullins Working intensity: moderate to very hard Length: 50 minutes Concept Behind the Profile Ireland has a population of 5 million people, but 70 million people call it home. We are the friendly Irish and we are the fighting Irish! I’ve picked several key moments in Irish culture that got Ireland noticed across the world and tied them into working intervals of varying duration. The terrain of Ireland is constantly changing, so be prepared for terrain that could always shift under your feet! The scope of this profile is to work below threshold, then at threshold, and finally give riders the option to work above threshold. When you ask a tourist about Ireland or if you think about how Ireland is perceived outside of our small isle, we are, in many cases, associated with the colour green, Guinness, and anything else that fits a stereotype. All one has to do is look at any tourist T-shirt! Let’s think beyond these stereotypes; Ireland has thrown herself into the world arena many times over the last few years (and before that) in the areas of dance, film, music, economics, and politics. These pivotal moments have slowly changed how we are perceived in the world. As the ride begins, I do like to mention a few quotes that various film and TV characters around the world have referenced about Ireland to lighten the mood. I will include some at the very end of this profile.

Although victory had eluded him on his previous ten attempts, Kuiper still regarded the Queen of the Classics as ‘his’ race. Paris-Roubaix, or the Hell of the North as it is also known, featured all the competitive ingredients he loved: an ordeal that only a rider with unimaginable perseverance and equally unimaginable willpower could withstand. The distance alone – between 255 and 265 kilometres as a rule – is enough to separate the men from the boys before the starting gun has even sounded. And the course itself, around 60 kilometres of which runs over ruthless stretches of cobbles, wears the riders down. The ride from Paris to Roubaix is a journey into pain. Rattling over those bald lumps of stone is hell on the joints. Your wrists, backside, and of course your legs are tested to breaking point. The weather often plays a decisive role, especially when the heavens open and mud from the sodden fields seeps onto the road. Road spatters leave many a rider peering out from behind a clay mask, as they slip, slide, tumble, get back up again, and doggedly give chase.

  • Roche Takes the Green Jersey!
PRESS RELEASE Roche takes the Green Jersey! Cyclist, Stephen Roche selected as Grand Marshal of the 2014 St. Patrick’s Festival Parade 27th February 2014: One of Ireland’s greatest ever sporting stars, cyclist Stephen Roche, was today unveiled as Grand Marshal of this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival Parade. Roche was chosen by Festival organisers for his outstanding contribution to the sport of cycling and the Dubliner will lead the Festival Parade ‘Peloton’ on its 2.6 kilometre route through Ireland’s capital on Monday, March 17th. The announcement caps off a great week for Roche, who officially entered the Giro d’Italia Hall of Fame at an event in Northern Ireland on Tuesday. The tribute to the champion coincides with this year’s Tour of Italy, the second biggest cycling race in the world, which will stage the ‘Grande Partenza’ or Big Start in Ireland from May 9th to 11th. Roche’s success has inspired thousands of cyclists in Ireland, including members of his own family with his son Nicolas Roche and nephew Dan Martin currently competing on the professional tour. Admired for his pedalling style, Stephen Roche was one of the finest cyclists of his generation, accumulating an impressive 58 professional career wins over his 13 year tenure. 1987 was Roche’s landmark year as he became only the second cyclist in history to capture the ‘Triple Crown of Victories’ winning the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the world championship in one season. Roche joins a list of inspirational Grand Marshals ranging from Katie Taylor to Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh to Ronnie Drew.

On May 13, 1909, the Giro’s first peloton of 127 riders (41 of the enrollees didn’t show up) met at the Piazzale Loreto in downtown Milan where La Gazzetta’s offices Red Devil, were situated. The eight-stage race went from Milan to Bologna and onward to Chieti, Naples, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Turin, returning to Milan on the 30th. Riders would cover 2,445 kilometers over eight stages, an average stage length of 306 kilometers, the Fist, not far from the Tour’s average. This was to be the shortest Giro ever. It should be noted that in the early years of bike racing distances were approximate. The various lengths we have for the first Giro, 2408, 2448, and 2445 kilometers—each from a dif- ferent but respected Italian writer—are all within the expected and the range of accuracy of the age. To minimize cheating and confusion, each of the riders was King of Mud photographed at the start for later comparison by the judges. Just as in the first couple of editions of the Tour, the Giro would allow several days of recovery between each stage. The riders faced roads that could only be described as menacing, especially in economically disadvantaged southern Italy.

  • Doping Na Tour De France
