Conserving Migratory and Nomadic Species
Conserving migratory and nomadic species Claire Alice Runge A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2015 School of Biological Sciences Abstract Migration is an incredible phenomenon. Across cultures it moves and inspires us, from the first song of a migratory bird arriving in spring, to the sight of thousands of migratory wildebeest thundering across African plains. Not only important to us as humans, migratory species play a major role in ecosystem functioning across the globe. Migratory species use multiple landscapes and can have dramatically different ecologies across their lifecycle, making huge contributions to resource fluxes and nutrient transport. However, migrants around the world are in decline. In this thesis I examine our conservation response to these declines, exploring how well current approaches account for the unique needs of migratory species, and develop ways to improve on these. The movements of migratory species across time and space make their conservation a multidimensional problem, requiring actions to mitigate threats across jurisdictions, across habitat types and across time. Incorporating such linkages can make a dramatic difference to conservation success, yet migratory species are often treated for the purposes of conservation planning as if they were stationary, ignoring the complex linkages between sites and resources. In this thesis I measure how well existing global conservation networks represent these linkages, discovering major gaps in our current protection of migratory species. I then go on to develop tools for improving conservation of migratory species across two areas: prioritizing actions across species and designing conservation networks. Protected areas are one of our most effective conservation tools, and expanding the global protected area estate remains a priority at an international level. -

Offord Botanic Gardens Trust, Mount Annan Botanic Garden, Mount Annan Drive, Mount Annan, NSW 2567, AUSTRALIA 1 Scientific Services Division, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW, PO Box 1967, Hurstville NSW 2220, AUSTRALIA Abstract: The New South Wales Seedbank (at Mount Annan Botanic Garden) stores seeds of both common and threatened species for conservation, research and restoration or revegetation projects. The value of the collections depends on our ability to germinate seeds once they have been retrieved from storage. The collection includes 129 collections representing 93 taxa in the family Rutaceae, but seed viability in Rutaceae is variable, germination cues are poorly-understood and problems are likely to arise in trying to grow plants from seed. In this study we quantified seed fill and/or viability and germination for 112 species in the Rutaceae family. For many of the species, this is the first time that these seed characteristics have been recorded. We found that seed fill (0–100%) and seed viability (0–97%), were highly variable, with 80% of collections having low viability (<75%). There was also a trend for threatened species to have lower seed fill than common species, while viability and germination were similar. This review reaffirms the need for further study of seed characteristics in Rutaceae. Cunninghamia (2009) 11(2): 203–212 Introduction variability to be retained. Managing Bird Damage Managing Bird Managing Bird Damage Bird damage is a significant problem in Australia with total to Fruit and Other Horticultural Crops damage to horticultural production estimated at nearly $300 million annually. Over 60 bird species are known to damage horticultural crops. These species possess marked differences in feeding strategies and movement patterns which influence the nature, timing and severity of the damage they cause. Reducing bird damage is difficult because of the to Fruit and Other Horticultural Crops Fruit and Other Horticultural to unpredictability of damage from year to year and a lack of information about the cost-effectiveness of commonly used management practices. Growers therefore need information on how to better predict patterns of bird movement and abundance, and simple techniques to estimate the extent of damage to guide future management investment. This book promotes the adoption of a more strategic approach to bird management including use of better techniques to reduce damage and increased cooperation between neighbours. Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. For more information please see: www.environment.gov.au/heritage/anhat/index.html Limitations • ANHAT currently contains information on the distribution of over 30,000 Australian taxa. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. She joined the staff at NSW in 1989 and died at Tahmoor, New South Wales on the 17th November 2013. Introduction Elizabeth Anne Brown was born on 15 November 1956 in Auckland, New Zealand. She was the second child and only daughter of Barbara Brown (née Bray, 1929–1998) and John Martin Ainley Brown (1928–2005) Professor of Plant Physiology, the University of Auckland) who emigrated from the Newcastle area of northern England to New Zealand on 19th March 1956. Since Government State housing was unavailable in New Zealand when they arrived, they initially stayed in a transit camp where Elizabeth was born. She had an elder brother, John Christopher Brown, born 12th August 1953, who died at the age of three just after Elizabeth’s birth. The family eventually moved into a house in Cathedral Place, Parnell where Elizabeth’s younger brother David was born in 1958. They later moved to Laurie Avenue, Parnell when Elizabeth was five and David three.
