The planning of this great event involved many hands - hands that were intertwined with the purpose of hosting the best possible the visitors from other lands, near and far. Without the immense support of the members of the International Advisory Board, the Brazilian Scientific Committee, the Organizing Committee and all employees of Unicamp it would be very difficult to reach the level of excellence set for this Conference. Now it is the time to move the event ahead, join all participants and check if everything that was carefully planned will take place successfully. It is important to remind that care has been taken of all details, but it is impossible to control all contingencies and unexpected factors that may happen during an event as big and complex as this one. I would like to sincerely thank Congressman Carlos Sampaio that, through a parliamentary amendment, guaranteed economic support for most of the activities of this Conference. I also thank the sponsors who were able to assess the importance of the 7th Conference to leverage scientific research about recreational fisheries in the emerging countries and the third world. My happiness is mixed with my apprehension of wondering if everything will be fine from today until the the 4th of September. Your cooperation and participation in this event of international magnitude, associated with the research projects carried out in the emergent countries will help our hard work of convincing and demonstrating to our governments the great and untapped treasure we hold in our hands. Mainly with scientific knowledge and objective experiences it will be possible to establish sustainable management plans for the development of recreational fisheries in Brazil and all over the world. Recreational fishing has a direct link with preservation and conservation of Nature; however, we must demonstrate that tie through concrete practices and actions. The Paulista Federation of Sport Fishing, Tourism and Environment, a nonprofit organization, is engaged in this spirit of transforming Brazilian extractive fishing guides into recreational fishing guides committed with the preservation and conservation of fauna and flora. Registrations will previously start on Sunday, August 31, 6:00 pm, at Campinas Tenis Club and they can be made during the welcome cocktail. Next day, Monday, the registration desk will function at the entrance of Convention Center and it will be open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm all along with the Conference activities (September 1 – 4). Last minute registrations for the 7WRFC and dinner will be accepted until September 2, Tuesday, noontime, through cash payment of fees in US dollars. Wireless Internet Connections & On Line Webcast Complimentary wireless internet access is available in all areas of the Convention Center and Gymnasium. Please get local access to the wireless system and insert SSID/Rede = Visitante and Password/Senha = wrfc2014. The four keynote speakers’ speeches will be transmitted to the rest of the world through streaming. Of course, latecomers can upload their presentation(s) during the conference breaks. Presenters should bring their presentations on a USB memory stick. A computer technician will be available in order to check if everything is all right with the file, testing it beforehand. Important: Speakers will not be allowed to upload their presentations immediately before or during the sessions, nor will they be allowed to use personal laptops. Poster Reception. Poster Session Presenters should bring along their poster directly to the Conference registration on Monday morning, starting at 8:00 am and ending at 1:00 pm. STANDING IN A RIVER WAVING A STICK The title of a 1999 book (above) by prolific fishing author, John Gierach, is also an apt description of both of our March meeting presenters. Visit a Columbia County trout stream virtually any day (or night) during the season and you are likely to find Bobby Fisher or John Libruk, and often both of them, doing exactly that…and more, catching 1600 to 1800 trout between the two of them in an average season. As good as these guys are at catching trout, that talent is not what chapter members will hear about at our March meeting. Rather, it is the “waving a stick” business, and specifically “the sticks” themselves, bamboo fly rods, that we will see and hear about. These two TU colleagues are our chapter’s experts on the subject. They will come prepared on March 21st to show us many of the dozens of bamboo rods (new and vintage) that they own between them…Winstons, Thomas and Thomas, Leonards, Paynes, Orvis and Winchesters (yes…Winchester); give us a brief history of bamboo rod-making; and explain at least a few of the “ins and outs” of the bamboo fly rod. If you have ever wondered about intermediate windings, impregnated versus varnished, quad rods, greenheart, or wormholes in the wood, or even if you have not wondered, you’ll enjoy and learn from John and Bobby.

    1 Humane Harvesting Initiative: The Influence of Humane Harvesting on Fish Quality, 2 Nutritional Value and Safety 3 2012 estimates put the global production of fisheries and aquaculture at 158 mmt, with 91.3 mmt 4 of that amount credited to capture and fisheries (FAO, 2014). Recently, fish welfare has been 5 gaining interest from both consumers and the fisheries industry (producers) concerning the 6 production, processing, quality, shelf life and nutritional value (Poli et al., 2005). Technically, it 7 is difficult to define and measure the welfare of fish in fisheries. According to Spruijt et al. 8 (2001), welfare is defined as “the balance between positive and negative experiences or affective 9 states. The state of this balance may range from positive (good welfare) to negative (bad 10 welfare).” In the case of fisheries, good welfare means good production at the end of the fish’s 11 life, and is determined by the handling of two important processes: the pre-slaughter procedure 12 and the final slaughter method employed. If these two steps are conducted in bad conditions, fish 13 will experience stress which can strongly impact their quality and nutritional value. However, 14 there are instructions, rules and methods for terrestrial animal welfare and humane slaughtering, 15 even if they haven’t been effectively made available. 16 History of Animal Welfare in U.S.A. 17 The first attempts at humane slaughtering and improved animal welfare practices date back to the 18 late 1800s when several new organizations were established in the United States, many linked to 19 the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, which was founded by Mary Ellen Wilson 20 in 1873.
