No. 202 April 2018 Fly of the Month – EZ By Hal Gordon

Background The EZ Klinkhammer pattern was featured in the February 2009 edition of the Trout and Salmon magazine. The fly has been a very productive pattern on heavily fished waters in the western United States.

How to Tie • Place hook in vice, expose as much hook shank as possible. Category Trout • Tie in a shuck made from three strands of Flashbou (optional) Hook #8 -20 Klinkammer or • Run thread down to the bend, tie in pearl tinsel rib. lite scud hook • Dub the thread and wind dubbing up the shank to form a nice Thread 0/6 Yellow, olive, black tapered body, stopping about 1/3 of hook shank back from or red the eye. Body Super fine dubbing any • Wind evenly spaced turns of the pearl tinsel, secure tinsel and color Pearl tinsel cut away tag end. Rib Thorax Peacock herl or Peacock • Secure peacock herl directly in front of body, wind forward to Ice Dub eye and then wind back to the body to create a pronounced Foam 3mm medium density thorax. golden yellow foam • Wind the peacock herl back towards the eye and position it Wing Poly or Antron yarn midway along the thorax. Hackle Grizzle, brown, dun or • Tie in and secure the yellow foam on top of the thorax with chestnut cock one or two turns of thread. Shuck Flashabou - optional • Tie in the post material above the foam and while holding both ends draw the thread down to position the post directly above the foam. • As the thread is tightened the foam will compress and the ends kick up. At the same time the point where the yarn is folded will be drawn into the foam base. • Take a turn of thread between the foam and the thorax and then tie in a prepared hackle. • Wind the thread to the hook eye. • Wind the hackle under the foam so that it is sitting directly above the thorax, applying between three and four turns. • Secure the hackle to the wing post, cut away the excess hackle and whip finish. • While pulling the yarn post to the side trim away the bulk of the foam with scissors • Pull the post back into position and trim to length.

Variations Tye light, medium and dark shades of body and hackle.

How to Fish Use as an emerger pattern, but fish it as a dry fly. I typically fish this fly as an emerger and as mature mayflies or caddis return to lay their eggs on the water surface. A drag-free drift is required. Strikes are savage.
