May 2020 Newsletter www.deepcreekflyfishers.org P.O. Box 8203, Redlands, CA 92375 President’s Message Our May DCFF meeting is still canceled, because of the closure by the City of Riverside for all their facilities as well as our Governor’s “Shelter at Home” policy that is still ongoing! Presently, we are planning to have the June 24th meeting using a Zoom meeting platform. We will send out an e-mail blast prior to that meeting for the meeting number and password. Our speaker for that meeting will be Steve Schulla who is the President of South West Council. He will be covering flyfishing education and benefits of being a member of the SWC as well as some fishing pics. Hopefully, by July 22nd meeting we will be able to meet at our club house or use the Zoom platform for that meeting. Our speaker scheduled for that meeting is Lee Baermann / Fly Fishing the Surf. He has an excellent presentation for us! Lake Perris May 2020 Our August meeting at this time is John Sherman who we had to reschedule from this spring because of COVID 19. I had previously asked our members back in January if any of them would like to have an outing at Lake Perris and many of you signed up for that. When the State Parks are re-opened, we will consider doing just that with those who are still interested. We will cover basic float tubing skills and equipment needed to fly fish local lakes. If you are still interested in doing that please send me your name, e-mail and phone number and I will be in touch with you in the near future. It seems that Lake Perris has just reopened recently, but access is limited. Carl and I checked it out this week to see about the possibilities for those interested! Reminder: the month of February was the month that our members were suppose to have paid their membership dues for 2020, we presently as of this past week had only 70% of our membership paid up. So, if you forgot to pay your annual dues, please try to send your check to: Deep Creek Fly Fishers ($30 for one person & family $40) c/o Michael Stuhl 231 E. Alessandro #802 Riverside, CA 92508 Clark Stevens [email protected] Trout in the Classroom SPONSORED BY DEEP CREEK FLY FISHERS Deep Creek Fly Fishers is pleased to be the Trout in the Classroom sponsor for many classrooms across a large portion of the Inland Empire. Through this program, students are taught about the care and development of trout through a curriculum that includes a variety of classroom lessons and activities. A major highlight of the program is a visit to the forest where students experience hands-on activities that enhance their classroom learnings. Volunteers from Deep Creek Fly Fishers and, when available, representatives from the California De- partment of Fish and Wildlife meet with students and their teacher at an approved release site, usually Apple- white Picnic Area on Lytle Creek. While there, students participate in educational activities conducted by Deep Creek Fly Fishers volunteers. Instruction begins weeks prior to the release date when volunteers from Deep Creek Fly Fishers deliver trout eggs provided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to classrooms. The eggs are placed in a fish tank, and a volunteer or the teacher gives a brief presentation. In succeeding weeks, students, with guidance from their teacher, maintain the fish tank providing a healthy and safe environment for the young fish. On the morning of the release, Deep Creek Fly Fishers volunteers arrive early to prepare for the day’s pro- gram and to set up the picnic area for each presentation. When students arrive, the class is divided into small groups. Each group will then rotate through four or five learning stations. The stations are: the history of trout in the Southwest, an entomology display and discussion, fly casting, physical characteristics of trout and the re- lease of trout into the water shed. Built into these stations are discussions about keeping the forest clean, the life cycle of aquatic insects, and environmental issues both natural and human that effect the forest habitat. Trout in the Classroom is a multi-grade level program, so the presentations are adapted to be grade level appro- priate. Following the educational portion of the day, students are usually treated to a picnic lunch provided by school personnel or the children’s parents. This time is important as it gives students the opportunity to reflect on the day’s activity and to enjoy the forest environment as they prepare for the trip back to school.
