The council does hold information within the definition of your request. Question 1 A list of all secondary, middle and upper schools in Cumbria and whether they were oversubscribed or not- oversubscribed on national offer day 2017 (1st March). Please include each school’s Unique Reference Number (URN), DFE code, or address/postcode to allow us to identify each relevant school without ambiguity. We define a school to be oversubscribed if, and only if, at least one on-time applicant was refused a place and the applicant did not receive an offer from any higher preference school. If there were no refusals to on-time applicants - even if the school was unable to accept one or more late applications, or admitted over its published admission number - then we do not consider this school to be oversubscribed. If you use a different definition of oversubscription, then please make this clear in the response. Question 2 The total number of places offered at each school. Questions 3-5 apply to oversubscribed schools only: Question 3 The number of on-time applicants refused a place who did not receive a place at any higher preference school. Question 4 The admission criterion under which the last successful applicant was admitted. Category 6 - Out of catchment children on distance grounds using a straight line measurement from home to school. Category 7 - all other children. Pupils are selected on the basis of their aptitude for the academic nature of the eductaion offered at the school, such selection being by way of evidence of aptitude from the entrance test. Category I - Children who are baptised in or are members of other Christian denominations, and which is supported by a certificate of Baptism and/or letter from their minister. If the number of applications in any of the categories A - K is above the number of places available, applications will be further ranked by measurement by reference to the following:- a) Children living nearest to the school as measured by the shortest walking route between home and school - as measured by the nearest walking route by road, using a published mapping system - the school will use the GIS system used by CCC. Category 8 - A child who lives outside the catchment area of the school, as defined by Cumbria County Council, based on closeness to the school (see note 2 below). Note 2 - closeness to the school will be used to place applicants in rank order if that is necessary. This means distance from the child's permanent address to the main entrance on Strand Road, constructed in 2011, measured in a straight line on a map. Category 5 - Children living outside the atachment area giving priority to those who live closest to the school, measured by the shortest walking route by road. Category (c) (2) - Young people living in the catchment area of the Academy. If more young people from within the catchment area apply than there are places avaiable, places will be allocated in the following order: 1 Young people who at the time of application have a brother or sister (including adopted siblings, step-siblings and those living as siblings in the same family unit) on the roll of West Lakes Academy and who will still be on roll at the time of the sibling's addmission. 2 To those who live nearest to the Academy measured by the shortest walking route by road using the Local Authority's Geographical Information System, from the front door of the Acadeemy to the centre of the child's home address. Category 5 - Children living outside the catchment area of the school. Distance Caldew School is an academy. The LA don't hold information about distance measurements.     PRESS RELEASE – 06.02.2009 SMALL SCHOOLS WORK The small rural secondary schools which make up the Rural Academy of Cumbria are leading the way in raising pupils’ attainment. Not only are their results improving faster than many schools in Cumbria but three of them were amongst the top five most improved schools in the country in 2008. Susie Shepherd, headteacher of Solway School, Silloth and chair of the Rural Academy Steering Group said, ‘We are all delighted with our 2008 examination results. Since 2004 the member schools have demonstrated the truly collaborative approach summarised in our motto, ‘Shared futures from local strengths’’ The Rural Academy of Cumbria was established to support the original partnership of nine schools which were all designated as specialist technology schools in 2004. Their bid for specialist school status as a group of collaborating schools was a unique achievement and resulted in them all receiving additional resources from the government which they would not have been able to achieve on their own. Member schools of the Rural Academy serve very varied communities spread out across Cumbria. The majority of the schools have less than 250 pupils with the largest, Appleby Grammar School, having just over 600. The schools have worked together and used their collective expertise to bring about rapid and wide-ranging improvements in the quality of the education they provide for their pupils. Over the past four years the examination results for each of the schools have been improving and in 2008 they have achieved their most notable successes to date. Settlebeck School, Sedbergh and Solway School, Silloth were joint third in the list of most improved secondary schools in the country.

    Co-ordinated Admission Scheme for all Maintained Schools and Academies in the Area of Cumbria County Council 2020–2021 Note: the list of schools may need to be revised to provide for the conversion of some schools to academies or to take account of other school organisational changes. For the purposes of this document ‘school’ refers to maintained schools and academies unless otherwise indicated. 1. Introduction (1) In line with the requirements of the 1998 School Standards and Framework Act (as amended) this scheme has been drawn up by Cumbria County Council to co- ordinate admissions to all maintained schools and academies in Cumbria, except for entry to Year 12 and for entry to special and nursery schools, regardless of whether the Local Authority (LA) or the governing body is the admission authority. (2) The scheme’s purpose is to ensure that, as far as reasonably practicable: i) Every parent or carer living in Cumbria who has applied for a place for their child for entry in September 2020 to Reception in an infant or primary school, Year 3 in junior school or to Year 7 at a secondary school in the normal admissions round, receives only one offer of a school place for each child on: (a) 1 March (or the next working day) for transferring to Year 7 at a secondary school; NOTE: The School Admissions Code 2014 states that, ‘for secondary school applications, all offers must be made on the same secondary National Offer Day ie. 1 March or the next working day’.     News Release PR 16689 For Immediate Release 25 February 2021 More Covid-19 Lateral Flow Tests centres open around county Essential workers who cannot work from home now have more ways to access regular COVID-19 Rapid Result Lateral Flow testing with eleven testing sites now open in Cumbria. Last week five testing sites opened in Carlisle, Aspatria, Kendal, Penrith, and Millom. This week, six additional sites have been been opened in Barrow in Furness, Dalton, Milnthorpe, Sedburgh, Workington and Whitehaven. Lateral Flow tests give a result in 30 minutes and help identify asymptomatic carriers, people who do have COVID-19 and are infectious but are not ill. These people can then self-isolate to protect others. The testing sites are open to any essential workers who cannot work from home and come into regular contact with other people through their job, and who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. The tests are free and no booking is required, but please note the sites are only open at the times stated. The tests are a major element of Cumbria’s strategy to battle COVID-19 and quickly becoming a routine part of many people’s working lives, with thousands having a test every week. But not all employers are able to provide the testing themselves and that’s where the County’s community testing sites come in. People who do have symptoms of coronavirus should book a test at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. They should not attend a Lateral Flow Community Testing Site.
