Request Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please supply the following: 1. A list of all secondary, middle and upper schools in Cumbria and whether they were oversubscribed or not- oversubscribed on national offer day 2020 (1st March). Please include each school’s Unique Reference Number (URN), DFE code, and/or address/postcode to allow us to identify each relevant school without ambiguity. We define a school to be oversubscribed if, and only if, at least one on-time applicant was refused a place and the applicant did not receive an offer from any higher preference school. If there were no refusals to on-time applicants - even if the school was unable to accept one or more late applications or admitted over its published admission number - then we do not consider this school to be oversubscribed. If you use a different definition of oversubscription, then please make this clear in the response. 2. The total number of places offered at each school on national offer day 2020. Questions 3-5 apply to oversubscribed schools identified in question 1 only: 3. The number of on-time applicants refused a place, at each individual school, who were not offered a place at any higher preference school. By this we mean the number of unsuccessful on-time applicants remaining on each school’s waiting list on offer day. 4. The admission criterion under which the last successful applicant was admitted on offer day. 5. The home-to-school distance of the last successful applicant, assuming distance was used to allocate this place. Please include measurement units and whether this is based upon a walking/driving route, straight line/as the / crow flies distance or an alternative measurement system. Please always list all schools within the Cumbria Local Authority even if you are unable to provide all the requested information - simply mark the relevant values as ‘Not Known’. Note: If any of these dates differ - please align to the relevant secondary offer/deadline dates for your local authority. • Secondary National Offer Day - 1st March 2020. • On-time applications – submitted before October 31st 2019 • Late applications – submitted after October 31st 2019 Middle deemed primary schools (if present in your authority) may align with other primary education provider dates If you feel that more information is required to interpret your answers to these questions, then please supply this information too. The information we collect will be used to update our findaschool service. This is a free service that provides parents with information regarding schools – with a focus on admissions – helping them to better understand their chances of getting a place at their preferred schools. Please see attached spreadsheet. 1 March 2020 was a Sunday so in Cumbria offer information was issued on Monday 2 March 2020 (the next working day). The remaining deadline dates set out above are applicable to the transfer to secondary main intake process in Cumbria LA.     PRESS RELEASE – 06.02.2009 SMALL SCHOOLS WORK The small rural secondary schools which make up the Rural Academy of Cumbria are leading the way in raising pupils’ attainment. Not only are their results improving faster than many schools in Cumbria but three of them were amongst the top five most improved schools in the country in 2008. Susie Shepherd, headteacher of Solway School, Silloth and chair of the Rural Academy Steering Group said, ‘We are all delighted with our 2008 examination results. Since 2004 the member schools have demonstrated the truly collaborative approach summarised in our motto, ‘Shared futures from local strengths’’ The Rural Academy of Cumbria was established to support the original partnership of nine schools which were all designated as specialist technology schools in 2004. Their bid for specialist school status as a group of collaborating schools was a unique achievement and resulted in them all receiving additional resources from the government which they would not have been able to achieve on their own. Member schools of the Rural Academy serve very varied communities spread out across Cumbria. The majority of the schools have less than 250 pupils with the largest, Appleby Grammar School, having just over 600. The schools have worked together and used their collective expertise to bring about rapid and wide-ranging improvements in the quality of the education they provide for their pupils. Over the past four years the examination results for each of the schools have been improving and in 2008 they have achieved their most notable successes to date. Settlebeck School, Sedbergh and Solway School, Silloth were joint third in the list of most improved secondary schools in the country.

    News Release PR 16689 For Immediate Release 25 February 2021 More Covid-19 Lateral Flow Tests centres open around county Essential workers who cannot work from home now have more ways to access regular COVID-19 Rapid Result Lateral Flow testing with eleven testing sites now open in Cumbria. Last week five testing sites opened in Carlisle, Aspatria, Kendal, Penrith, and Millom. This week, six additional sites have been been opened in Barrow in Furness, Dalton, Milnthorpe, Sedburgh, Workington and Whitehaven. Lateral Flow tests give a result in 30 minutes and help identify asymptomatic carriers, people who do have COVID-19 and are infectious but are not ill. These people can then self-isolate to protect others. The testing sites are open to any essential workers who cannot work from home and come into regular contact with other people through their job, and who do not have COVID-19 symptoms. The tests are free and no booking is required, but please note the sites are only open at the times stated. The tests are a major element of Cumbria’s strategy to battle COVID-19 and quickly becoming a routine part of many people’s working lives, with thousands having a test every week. But not all employers are able to provide the testing themselves and that’s where the County’s community testing sites come in. People who do have symptoms of coronavirus should book a test at nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119. They should not attend a Lateral Flow Community Testing Site. Colin Cox, Cumbria’s Director of Public Health, said: “Mass Lateral Flow Testing of those without symptoms is a key part of the strategy for preventing the spread of Covid and getting us out of lockdown.
