GRANT RECIPIENTS

Norine Johnson Research Grant At its October 2010 Board Meeting, the Board approved the annual Norine Johnson, Ph.D., Psychotherapy Research Grant, which provides funds toward the advancement of research on psychotherapist factors that may impact treatment effectiveness and outcomes, to include type of training, amount of training, professional degree or discipline of the psychotherapist, and the role or impact of psychotherapists’ personal characteristics on psychotherapy treatment outcomes. In 2010, the approved amount of the grant was $20,000

2011: The Division 29 Norine Johnson Psychotherapy Research Grant has been awarded to Drs. Clara Hill and Charles Gelso for their proposed study of therapist effects on psychotherapy outcome. Specifically, the grant research will examine certain variables proposed to foster the development of effective psychotherapists, including training, attachment styles, and countertransference.

2012: Cheri L. Marmarosh, Ph. D. her study entitled "The Impact of Therapists' Attachment Styles on the Identification of Ruptures and Facilitation of Repairs in Psychotherapy."

At its October 2012 Board meeting, the board changed the grant structure, and reduced the amount to $10,000, open to any researcher.

Charles C. Gelso Psychotherapy Research Grant At its October 28, 2009 Board meeting, the Board approved the annual Charles J. Gelso, Ph.D., Psychotherapy Research Grant, which provides $2,000 toward the advancement of research on psychotherapy process or psychotherapy outcome.

2010: Stephanie Budge, University of Wisconsin—Madison and her project mentor is Dr. Bruce Wampold. The project title is “Determining Treatment and Cost-Effectiveness of for Personality Disorders Using Treatment- as-Usual and Bona-Fide Treatments”.

2012: Marilyn Cornish for her project: Promoting Self-Forgiveness and Well-Being: Testing a Novel Therapy Intervention

At its October 2012 Board meeting, the Board approved an increase in the Gelso grant to $5000 and added two other research grants for $5000 (for early career researchers).

2013: Jenelle-Slavin-Mulford, PhD for her proposal: Trainee Therapist Characteristics related to therapeutic Alliance and Technique

2014: Jamie D. Bedics, Ph.D., for his proposal: A moment-to-moment analysis of the therapeutic process as a predictor of outcome during dialectical behavior therapy for the treatment of borderline personality disorder.

AND - Casey O’Brien, B.S. for the proposal: The process behind group therapy: Understanding the climate of a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group for adolescents with mood disorders.

2015: Stephanie Hoover for the proposal: In-session process of culturally- accommodated and standard therapy for Latino adolescents.

AND –Joel Town for the proposal: Halifax somatic symptom pilot project: Characterizing therapist technique & exploring associations to post-session ratings of process and symptom change.

AND – Samantha Bernecker for her proposal: Can laypeople learn to be their own therapists? “Crowdsourcing Mental Health” to disseminate psychotherapy ingredients and improve public mental health.

Diversity Research Grant In December 2012, the Board approved the standards for the Diversity Research Grant, is established to foster the promotion of diversity within Division 29 and within the profession of psychotherapy. The Division may award annually a $2,000 Diversity Research Grant to a pre-doctoral candidate (enrolled in a clinical or doctoral program) who is currently conducting research that promotes diversity, as outlined by the American Psychological (APA). According to the APA, diversity is defined as individual and role differences, including those based on age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, disability, language, and socioeconomic status.

2013: Ms. J. Alexis Ortiz, University of New Mexico, for her dissertation: Bridging the Gap: A Comparison of Adapted and Standard Version of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction with Latino Populations.

SPECIAL AWARDS

1980: A Special Award was given to Vin Rosenthal for originating the Midwinter Meetings of the Division. 1983: A Special Award was given to Fran Pepitone-Rockwell for her work in keeping the Division’s journal free of sexist language. 1985: A Distinguished Service Award was given to Benjamin Fabrikant for years of dedication and effectiveness as administrative coordinator 1989: Matty Canter received an award for her service as Administrative Liaison between the Division’s Central Office and its Executive Committee. 1990: Special awards were given to Scott Mesh and David Pilon, early student affiliates of the Division who played a significant role in the establishment of the American Psychological Association of Graduate Students (APAGS) 1990: A Special Award was given to Bryant Welch, Executive Director of the APA Practice Directorate, for his outstanding contributions. 1998: Russ Newman received an award in appreciation for all his efforts on behalf of practice, at the Midwinter Convention. 2002: Living Legends of Psychotherapy Awards were presented at the Midwinter Convention to James Bugenthal, Albert Ellis, Rachel Hare-Mustin, and Alvin Mahrer. 2004: Jack Wiggins was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award 2006: Matty Canter presented with an award as champion of the APF/Division 29 Early Career Award
