CONCORDIA THEOLOGICAL QUARTERLY Volume 55: Number 1 JANUARY 1991 The Symposia of Concordia Theological Seminary (January1991) ............................... 1 Bach and Pietism: Similarities Today Robin A. Leaver The topic of this essay is controversial-controversial in regard to Bach, controversial in regard to Pietism, and controversial in regard to any similarities we might encounter between Bach's relationship to Pietism and what is happening in many churches today. The basic problem is that there is much misperception of what Pietism was and much misunder- standing of Bach's relation to Pietism. The literature on Pietism is confusing in that many different and conflicting opinions are propounded concerning the nature of the movement and its relation to Lutheran Orthodoxy. Similarly, there is no unanimity in Bach literature on the subject of the cantor's relationship to Pietism. I propose first to review some of the contemporary assess- ments of Bach and Pietism in order to discover the presuppo- sitions regarding both Pietism and Bach's relation to it; then to examine the basic features of the Pietist movement of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and to test the contem- porary presuppositions against the evidence; then, in this light to re-examine various aspects of Bach's career and composi- tions; and, finally, to begin to address the question of the parallels between Bach's day and our own.

  • BEFORE BACH and AFTER Johann Sebastian Bach's Motets Enjoy A
BEFORE BACH AND AFTER Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets enjoy a special kind of status in the choral repertoire. They contain sophisticated, almost self-consciously brilliant music of high quality and rich invention; they also make virtuoso demands of any vocalists who dare to perform them! At times it can seem as if their very eminence has isolated them, so that as musical works they appear to be floating in a genre of their own making. Yet it is a porous identity, for there are other works or bits of works that claim our attention, and while Bach composed only seven motets and a handful of arrangements, there are over two hundred cantatas. Are those seven really so special? In fact I believe they are, and just as orchestras like to push themselves by presenting a cycle of, say, the nine Beethoven symphonies, so we in our more intimate domain felt inspired to present a cycle of Bach motets. But we also aim in this series of four concerts to place them in a wider historical context and examine just what a ‘motet’ has been and what it might be today: both before Bach therefore, and after. The Old Bach Archive In later life Johann Sebastian started to take an interest in collecting together the works of his Bach forebears and items of music by other composers whose work appealed to him. Many of these pieces were motets, mostly written in the older stile antico. Bach had undoubtedly encountered some of this music earlier in his life, especially the work of his immediate ancestors, but as he grew older his interest in family history grew stronger, and there is no question that he regarded this collection, which became known as the Altbachisches Archiv, both as an important part of his inheritance and also as a legacy for his children and grandchildren.

Please disable the audible signal on all watches, pagers and cellular phones for the duration of the concert. Use of cameras, recording equipment and all electronic devices is not permitted in the concert hall. BAROQUE SPLENDOR This evening we present three brilliant works from the Baroque era. Two of them display artistic characteristics shown in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature, dance, theatre and music of the period: a sense of grandeur, movement, tension, high emotion, conflicting forces, vitality, exaggerated movement, complexity – all designed to appeal to the highest emotions of the consumer. The third piece on our program is strikingly different from the other two: an example of a simpler, chant-like style called falsobordone. Jesu, meine Freude is the largest of six works most often classified as Bach’s motets, believed to have been composed while he was serving as Kapellmeister at Thomaskirche in Leipzig (1723-1750). Though evidence is not conclusive, historians believe this work was composed in 1723 for the funeral of the wife of the local postmaster. Bach utilized a German hymn text by Johann Franck (1618-1677) and passages from Romans, on which the sermon at the funeral was based. The texts are set in alternating fashion in eleven movements, making this work twice as large as any other Bach motet.

  • HYMNS of the THIRTY YEARS' WAR a Tribute to the Dying Saviour
HYMNS OF THE THIRTY YEARS' WAR A Tribute to the Dying Saviour Ah, holy Jesus, how hast Thou offended, That man to judge Thee hast in hate pretended? By foes derided, by Thine own rejected, O most afflicted! Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon Thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone Thee! 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied Thee: I crucified Thee. Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; The slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered; For man's atonement, while he nothing heedeth, God intercedeth. For me, kind Jesus, was Thine incarnation, Thy mortal sorrow, and Thy life's oblation; Thy death of anguish and Thy bitter passion, For my salvation. Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay Thee, I do adore Thee, and will ever pray Thee: Think on Thy pity and Thy love unswerving, Not my deserving. JOHANN HEERMANN, 1630. Times of suffering and affliction have often brought forth great poets. This was especially true of that troublous period in European history known as the "Thirty Years' War." Although it was one of the most distressing eras in the Protestant Church, it gave birth to some of its grandest hymns. It was during this dreadful period, when Germany was devastated and depopulated by all the miseries of a bloody warfare, that Johann Heermann lived and wrought. He was born at Rauden, Silesia, October 11, 1585, the son of a poverty-stricken furrier. There were five children in the family, but four of them were snatched away by death within a short time.

  • Proper 10 (Series B) “Jesus, Priceless Treasure”
Proper 10 (Series B) “Jesus, Priceless Treasure” (Lutheran Service Book, #743) Biblically informed individuals are quite aware that since The Fall hardships, temporal and spiritual temptations, and trials are weighty challenges that will confront them throughout their life. Believers and unbelievers alike, no one escapes them! Johann Franck (1618-1677), who penned “Jesus, Priceless Treasure”, knew of many difficult hardships. In fact, he chronicles a variety of them in this hymn, e.g. “storms”, “empty glory”, Satan’s tempting, and others. How he confronts them—in some instances quite defiantly, can provide encouragement to the reader/singer. Clearly reflected is a confident Biblical faith that enables this positive confrontation. Realizing Franck was born the same year the 30 Years War commenced, and living several decades thereafter, he would have known from firsthand experiences and observation about dealing with various kinds of deprivation, unnatural loss of lives, property and possessions, and premature death for many. Yet, what shines through in this hymn is the stalwart assurance he finds in the “Priceless Treasure”. Boldly, even exuberantly, Franck’s words can help us confidently sing of where true, enduring safety, peace, and “purest Pleasure” are to be found. Several complementary components contribute to the widespread appeal of this hymn in America. Deserving particular recognition are the buoyant chorale tune “Jesu, meine Freude” and the splendid English translation that are commonly partners when it is sung. Separated from these, it is hard to imagine this poem having its breadth of recognition and being included in multiple Christian hymnals in this century. Some of its textual richness can be further appreciated by focusing on various expressive adjectives, verbs, and salient nouns, each of which assists in illuminating a bit more brightly and clearly a life that has its abiding trust in Jesus, the priceless Treasure.
