    Fall 1988 71 Estrangement and Engagement: Sam Shepard's Dramaturgical Strategies Susan Harris Smith Current scholarship reveals an understandable preoccupation with and confusion over Sam Shepard's most prominent characteristics, his language and imagery, both of which are seminal features of his technical innovation. In their attempts to describe or define Shepard's idiosyncratic dramaturgy, critics variously have called it absurdist, surrealistic, mythic, Brechtian, and even Artaudian. Most critics, too, are concerned primarily with his themes: physical violence, erotic dynamism, and psychological dissolution set against the cultural wasteland of modern America (Marranca, ed.). But in focusing on Shepard's imagery, language, and themes, some critics ignore theatrical performance. Beyond observing that many of Shepard's role-playing characters engage in power struggles with each other, few critics have concerned themselves with Shepard's structural strategies or with the ways in which he manipulates his audience. One who has addressed the issue, Bonnie Marranca, writes: Characters often engage in, "performance": they create roles for themselves and dialogue, structuring new realities. ... It might be called an aesthetics of actualism. In other words, the characters act themselves out, even make them• selves up, through the transforming power of their imagina• tion. Carveth The preoccupation with the personal and interpersonal dilemmas of the contemporary disordered self that typifies the work of the American playwright, Sam Shepard, is clearly reflected in the central themes of the film, Paris, Texas . Directed by Wim Wenders who collaborated with Shepard on the screenplay, the film was awarded the Palme d'Or for 1984 at Cannes. This essay in comparative psychoanalysis considers this work from the standpoint of each of two contrasting psychoanalytic approaches to the origins of pathological narcissism.     ABSTRACT A Director’s Approach to Sam Shepard’s True West Rob Yoho, M.F.A. Mentor: David J. Jortner, Ph.D. Sam Shepard’s True West is a black comedy that tells the story of Austin and Lee, two brothers leading vastly different lives who meet unexpectedly at their mother’s home in suburban Los Angeles, and through a series of increasingly surreal events, attempt to assume the identity of the other. This thesis surveys and critiques the research and practical phases of Baylor University’s May, 2015 mainstage production of this play. Chapter One examines the life and works of Sam Shepard with special attention given to True West’s critical legacy and major productions. Chapter Two analyzes Shepard’s play and applies relevant critical theory to his text. Chapters Three and Four chronicle the application of this analysis and theory to directing the play and collaborating with actors and designers. Rubenstein 1 Abstract Fascination with names, especially personal names, has been a hallmark of Sam Shepard's life and career. Born Samuel Shepard Rogers VII, he dropped his last name as a result of friction with his father; this act foreshadowed the theme of father-son conflict in a number of his plays. Until recently Shepard has used suggestive nomenclature exten- sively, including not only famous living or historical figures and stereotypical macho cow- boy names but also fanciful, symbolic names which display his poetic inventiveness and wit. ***** Here's a few of my favorite words: Slipstream, ... Wichita, Choctaw, Apache, Switchblade, Bootleg, Fox, Vixen, Coyote, Crow, ... Ap- paloosa, ... Cajun, ... Mojo, Shadow, Cheyenne, Ghost, Saint, Aztec, Quaxaca, Messiah, ... Antelope, PythOf' Yucca, ... Moxie, Hooch, Wolf, ... Pistol, Abalone, Cowboy, Stranger. The playwright we know as Sam Shepard was actually named Sam Shepard Rogers, the seventh to bear that name. Born on November 5, 1943, he was nicknamed Steve by his mother in order to distinguish him from his father, and he changed the name at the beginning of his Off-Off Broadway career (1964). In Shepard's words, "I just dropped the Rogers part of it. It had been in the family for seven generations and my grandmother wasn't happy over it" (Oumano 22). But as Ellen Oumano wryly points out, he could have dropped Shepard rather than Rogers; she considers the change "a deliberate break with his heredity, an attempt to construct his own identity." Though Steve loved his father and pitied the father's wartime wound and subsequent psychological problems, he also chafed under the parent's "drinking bouts and military-style discipline" (20).

    SPRING 1991 49 The Master and His Double: Eugene O'Neill and Sam Shepard Henry I. Schvey The very notion of linking Eugene O'Neill and Sam Shepard will seem ludicrous to some. Aside from the fact that Shepard may yet become as dominant a figure in the contemporary American theatre as O'Neill was in his day, there might seem no reason at all to suggest a comparison between the haunted father of American drama, with his belief in a fundamentally tragic vision of man derived at least in part from such European masters as Freud, Nietzsche, Ibsen, and Strindberg; and Shepard, the apparently self-engendered cowboy of the American stage, part movie star and part jazz musician, whose early works owe more to the '60s drug culture, rock music and the "transform­ ation" techniques developed at Joseph Chaikin's experimental and highly influential Open Theatre in New York than to any concern with literary tradition, whether American or European. His plays have a mythic quality. The myths he creates are considered as postmodern; they are parodic by nature and emblematic of American pop culture. “Myth of the artist” is highlighted in many of his plays concerned with the notion of art. Angel City hinges on the corruption of the artistic imagination and the doom of the American dream; on the whole, it is a postmodern sublime-- a parody of the modernist apocalyptic vision or dystopia. This play, like Shepard’s other plays, is considered historiographic in that it deals with the past representations and attempts at reviewing and questioning the past. This article addresses the historiographic quality of Shepard’s Angel City, with emphasis on Linda Hutcheon's poetics of postmodern historiography and Roland Barth’s conception of modern myths in relation to patterns of culture. The parodic aspect of the play, it is argued, poses a critical stance vis-à-vis the past representations of the myths and the elitist approach of modernist art. In this study, the aim is to show how Shepard has questioned notions such as the myth of capitalism, myth of origin, myth of the savior, myth of the American dream, and myth of mission in the context of art and how the old myths of hero turn into myths of anti-hero in postmodern drama.

POSSIBLE WORLDS IN SAM SHEPARD’S FOOL FOR LOVE AND ITS CINEMATIC ADAPTATION Abstract This paper is an attempt to compare Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love, published in 1983, and its cinematic adaptation directed by Robert Altman, released in 1985, in terms of the notion of possible worlds (in the philosophically-oriented branch of cognitive poetics). In her discussion of possible worlds, Marie-Laure Ryan proposes a typolo- gy of accessibility relations (identity of properties, identity of inventory, compatibili- ty of inventory, chronological, physical, taxonomic, logical, analytical, and linguistic compatibility) in order to account for how the sense of the reality of our actual world reverberates in fictional worlds. Ryan also offers another typology, that is, the internal structure of the fictional world (knowledge worlds, intention worlds, wish worlds, obligation worlds, and fantasy worlds) to show how the characters’ different conceptions of the world define and build up the narrative structure of fiction.
