Our museum is thus still a relative newcomer on the international scene. Nonetheless, in this fairly short period, the Van Gogh Museum has established itself as one of the liveliest institutions of its kind, with a growing reputation for its collections, exhibitions and research programmes. The past year has been marked by particular success: the Van Gogh and Gauguin exhibition attracted record numbers of visitors to its Amsterdam venue. And in this Journal we publish our latest acquisitions, including Manet's The jetty at Boulogne-sur-mer, the first important work by this artist to enter any Dutch public collection. By a happy coincidence, our 30th anniversary coincides with the 150th of the birth of Vincent van Gogh. As we approach this milestone it seemed to us a good moment to reflect on the current state of Van Gogh studies. For this issue of the Journal we asked a number of experts to look back on the most significant developments in Van Gogh research since the last major anniversary in 1990, the centenary of the artist's death. Our authors were asked to filter a mass of published material in differing areas, from exhibition publications to writings about fakes and forgeries. To complement this, we also invited a number of specialists to write a short piece on one picture from our collection, an exercise that is intended to evoke the variety and resourcefulness of current writing on Van Gogh. -

Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries continue to inspire millions of people all around the world, as is reflected in the sustained high numbers of visitors to both the museum and its website. In the past year, 2,165,000 art lovers from the Netherlands and abroad visited the museum, and our online fan base grew exponentially. After being officially opened by King Willem-Alexander during a celebratory event, the exhibition Van Gogh & Japan attracted an impressive 430,000 visitors, making it a great success. Van Gogh aspires was published last year, the Strategic Plan 2018-2020 outlining how the museum will work towards realising its Strategic Pillars in the years ahead. In its endeavours to deliver and uphold its mission, vision and core values, the museum focuses on three dimensions: local, global and digital. -

Portrait Vincent Van Gogh . Vincent was born in 1853 in the Netherlands. He tried to be preacher, a school teacher, and an art dealer before embarking on his career. Van Gogh spent 2 years sharpening his drawing skills before he allowed himself to use color or paint. He was almost entirely self-taught. His closest friend and relative was his brother Theo, and art dealer, who also supported him financially. Vincent Spent his life in poverty, choosing to spend money on paints rather than food to eat. His early paintings portrayed the lives of poor farmers and coal miners. The colors he used were dull and dark. Later, he was strongly influenced by the Impressionists of the day. With time he became much bolder in his paintings. He began to use slashing brush strokes and clear, bright colors. He was a pioneer for expressionism. Expressionists profoundly show their emotions through their paintings. What a stroke of luck! Martin Bailey has written a wonderful exploration of Vincent van Gogh and some of the most famous sunflowers in history. I am reviewing this book the Sunflowers are Mine for Martin Bailey, Quarto Publishing and NetGalley who gave me a copy of their book for an honest review. Relations with his family, which were frequently fraught, only deteriorated. White Lion Publishing. Around the BBC. This is a very readable study of Van Gogh's life as seen through the creation of his 7 paintings of sunflowers; the second half gives us the histories of the paintings since Van Gogh's death. But the weather improved, and — characteristically — he raced off on another idea. In Le Moulin de Blute-Fin, the vibrant greens of the hillside and the blues of the sky reveal the influence of French contemporary art. But she was not alone in her reaction. Some months aft erwards the paintings were sold off for a pittance when Le Tambourin was hit by a financial crisis — and they were never seen again. Painters understand nature and love it, and teach us to see. About Martin Bailey. Alastair Sooke shows how these masterpieces came to be. It is only pages, but they are well employed. Nine Van Gogh 'fakes' that have emerged as the real thing The Oslo self-portrait and other paintings have been authenticated by the artist’s museum a blog by MARTIN BAILEY 24th January 2020 12:24 GMT Vincent van Gogh’s Self-portrait (1889) Courtesy of Nasjonalmuseet for Kunst, Arkitektur og Design, Oslo (F528) A group of Van Goghs which had been dismissed as likely fakes have been reattributed to the artist in recent years. The 1889 Self- Portrait from Oslo’s National Museum is only the latest example. On Monday the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam announced that a five-year research project had concluded that the Oslo painting is now the only known one made by the artist during a psychotic attack—so it tells us something new about his tormented condition. A very important, but almost unnoticed change has been going on in Van Gogh studies. Until recently, the artist’s oeuvre had been reduced, but now it is being expanded again. The question of fake Van Goghs was brought to international attention by The Art Newspaper in 1997, when we revealed that “at least 45 Van Goghs may well be fakes”. This was based on the conclusions of the late Jan Hulsker, the author of a revised catalogue of the artist’s oeuvre, who was questioning works that he had earlier included in the first edition of The Complete Van Gogh in 1980. -

The permanent collection is drawing a growing number of Dutch and foreign visitors, the exhibitions programme is simultaneously receiving a good press and reaching a public that is both large and involved. There have been a significant number of important acquisitions, not least two wonderful early landscapes by Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet, and the output of our academic staff has been considerable. At last the start of work on our new exhibition wing is also in sight, and the adjoining premises at Museumplein 4 have become available for the accommodation of the library and documentation centre. In a number of senses, the Van Gogh Museum now occupies a central position on Amsterdam's Museumplein. Meanwhile we have been hard at work on the renovation of the Museum Mesdag in The Hague, which reopened its doors to the public on 12 October 1996. While there is space in this volume of the Van Gogh Museum Journal for only the merest reflection of all these activities, the high points will be summarised in a Review covering the period up to the end of 1996. In this issue we have chosen once more to give centre stage to two facets of our work, the Museum Mesdag and our sculpture acquisitions. You will therefore find articles on the history, renovation and collections in The Hague; and also a concise catalogue of the young but fast-growing collection of sculpture in Amsterdam. -

J’ai trouvé dans la description éparai de Joséphin Péladan (entre pages 2, 23, 69, etc.) les traits caractéristiques de ma figure; lorsque j’ai été averti de la ressemblance, j’ai fait tout ce qui était possible pour l’atténuer et si, à l’exposition, je n’ai pas retiré le dessin, c’est qu’on était loin de s’accorder sur la « frappante ressemblance. » Quant au reproche, venant d’autre part, d’ « avoir abusé de la complaisance de Mme. Caron pour exposer aux tableau dont elle repousse tout espèce de collaboration, alors que j’étais venu chez elle pour faire son portrait en tenue de ville, » il est absolument ridicule. Le portrait—commandé—est vu d’un tout autre coté que le dessin, et si j’avais voulu « prendre la tête » de Mme. Caron, il eut été plus facile et surtout plus rapide de me servir d’une photographe.
