Recently H. S. Bostock, of the Geological Survey of Canada, studied the physiography of the northern Cordilleran region; his report and maps are published CI I c Fig. 1. Rglief map of British Columbia. in Memoir 247 of the Geological Survey, Department of Mines and Resources, Ottawa. The divisions shown on the accompanying sketch, Figure 2, and the nomenclature used in the text are those proposed by Bostock. Most of the Province of British Columbia lies within the region of mountains and plateaus, the Cordillera of Western Canada, that forms the western border of the North American Continent. The extreme northeastern comer of the Province, lying east of the Cordillera, is part of the Great Plains region. The Rocky Mountain Area extends along the eastern boundary of the Province for a distance of 400 miles, and continues northwestward for an additional 500 miles entirely within the Province. The high, rugged Rocky Mountains, averaging about 50 miles in width, are flanked on the west by a remarkably long and straight valley, known as the Rocky Mountain Trench, and occupied from south to north by the Kootenay, Columbia, Canoe, Fraser, Parsnip, Finlay, Fox, and Kechika Rivers. Of these, the first four flow into the Pacific Ocean and the second four join the Mackenzie River to flow ultimately into the Arctic Ocean. -

These reports are narrative outlines of how Indian and non-native populations have used these -rivers, with emphasis on navigability, tidal influence, riparian interests, settlement patterns, commercial use and fishing rights. These historical reports were requested by the Interdepartmental Reserve Boundary Review Committee, a body comprising representatives from Indian Affairs and Northern Development [DIAND], Justice, Energy, Mines and Resources [EMR], and chaired by Fisheries and Oceans. The committee is tasked with establishing a government position on reserve boundaries that can assist in determining the area of application of Indian Band fishing by-laws. -

E-mail: [email protected] Table of Contents EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report presents the results of the Public Safety Canada funded project to inventory current and predict future trends in avalanche threats and mitigation programs in Canada. The project also updated the Natural Resources Canada website and map of fatal avalanche incidents. Avalanches have been responsible for at least 702 fatalities in Canada since the earliest recorded incident in 1782. Sixty-one percent of these fatalities occurred in British Columbia, with 13% in Alberta, 11% in Quebec and 10% in Newfoundland and Labrador. The remainder occurred in Ontario, Nova Scotia and the Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories. Fifty-three percent of the fatalities were people engaged in recreational activities, while 18% were people in or near buildings, 16% were travelling or working on transportation corridors and 8% were working in resource industries. -

These strata were deposited as a result of tectonism that formed the Canadian Cordillera, and serve as a record of the tectonic history of the Cordillera. The strata of the north-central Bowser Basin have been the subject of an integrated lithostratigraphic, palynostratigraphic and sedimentologic study in order to better understand the depositional history of the basin and the tectonic history of the Cordillera. -

Cannings Royal British Columbia Museum November 2016 Introduction This treatment of the ecozones of British Columbia is slightly modified from the one I wrote in The Checklist of the Lepidoptera of British Columbia, Canada (Pohl et al. 2015). Ecozone and Biogeoclimatic Zone information is integrated. Authors of annotated checklists of various taxa in the province might find it a useful framework in which to discuss the biodiversity and distribution of species in the groups in question. The most useful summaries of British Columbia’s environment are found in Meidinger and Pojar (1991), BC Ministry of Forests and Range (2013), Demarchi (1996), and Cannings and Cannings (1996). The following details are mostly taken from these publications. Large and diverse, British Columbia (BC) is exceptionally variable physically and biologically. Covering almost 950,000 sq km, the province spans 11 degrees of latitude and 25 degrees of longitude. It is about 1300 km from the southern coast of Vancouver Island to the northern boundary at 60˚ N and, along this latitude, the boundary with the Yukon and the Northwest Territories stretches almost 1100 km. Mountains and the sea-bound coast, studded with islands, epitomize BC, and the region is mostly cool, moist, forested and mountainous. But such generalities do not do justice to the striking diversity of wet and dry forests, grasslands, wetlands, scrub and alpine tundra forming complex mosaics of habitat across vast plateaus, valleys and plains lying among several northwest-southeast trending mountain ranges. Climates range from semi-arid and Mediterranean to subarctic and alpine. -
