2008-09 NEC Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year: Matt Jones, Sacred Heart Major: Business

Sacred Heart senior goalkeeper Matt Jones (Stoke-on-Trent, England/Sandon) collected NEC Scholar-Athlete honors in men’s soccer last year. Jones earned the third all-NEC honor of his career last fall when he was voted a first team all-star following an outstanding campaign between the pipes for the Pioneers, who just missed out on a playoff berth. Jones finished the season with a 1.08 goals against average and four shutouts. He started every game in net for Sacred Heart from the moment he stepped on campus four years ago, ending his career with 71 matches, 30 wins, 21 shutouts and over 6,500 minutes played. He also had the rare distinction of a keeper scoring a game-winning goal in the 2008 season when he converted a penalty kick in a 2-1 double overtime win over Maine on September 5th. Jones, who was a second team all-conference selection as a freshman and first team honoree as a junior, calls Stoke-on-Trent, England home. He compiled a 3.63 grade point average majoring in Business. Returning NEC Scholar-Athletes Name School Yr. Major Name School Yr. Major Patrick Bedard BU Sr. Accounting George Caiella MU So. Congratulations to the 2008 Team GPA Award Winner: Long Island (3.28) Fans:

Welcome to the 2009 Northeast Conference Men’s Soccer Championship! Now in its 29th season, the NEC is proud to bring its men’s soccer tournament to the West Long Branch community and host Monmouth University for the fifth consecutive year. The Garden State autumn will provide a picturesque backdrop for one of the final NEC championships of the fall. Consisting of 12 institutions of higher learning located throughout six states, the NEC is committed to providing opportunities for student- athletes to achieve their fullest potential both in athletic competition and in the classroom, as well as becoming an NCAA Division I leader for athletic success, academic achievement and integrity, sportsmanship, equity and diversity, community partnership and national engagement. NEC member institutions include Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Quinnipiac, Robert Morris, Sacred Heart, St. Francis (NY), Saint Francis (PA) and Wagner. Bryant University will become a core member of the NEC in 2012 upon completion of the five-year NCAA Division I reclassification period. NEC institutions span a number of diverse locations, from the urban bustle of Brooklyn, NY to the rural settings of Loretto, PA and Emmitsburg, MD, to the beaches and shoreline of West Long Branch, NJ. But when it comes to intercollegiate athletics, the goal of the NEC is consistent - to provide its members the opportunity to participate in quality competition at the Division I level while operating programs that are fully integrated in the academic mission of each institution. The NEC’s commitment to academic excellence has translated into national recognition for both individual student-athletes and the league’s member institutions as a whole. NEC student-athletes consis- tently graduate at well above the national average and its athletic programs continue to be honored for their Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and Academic Progress Rate (APR) figures. On a conference-wide level, more than 2,000 student-athletes qualified for the NEC Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09, nearly a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Saint Francis (PA) posted the highest GPA in the conference to claim the NEC Institutional Academic Award for the first time. On the field of play, the NEC has enjoyed many successes both regionally and nationally, competing in 21 NCAA championships each year. Last season, men’s soccer had its most successful year since 1987 with three student-athletes earning All-America honors, including QU’s Graciano Brito, FDU’s Samson Malijani and MU’s Angelo Amato. In 2009, Monmouth was a staple among the NSCAA National Rankings, reaching as high as No. 7 towards the end of October to match the national standing FDU attained during its 2005 campaign, marking a NEC-best in the modern era. The future of the NEC looks even brighter with new facilities and improvements recently completed, under construction or in planning stages at a majority of the league’s member institutions. We also would like to thank you, the fans, for your support and tremendous enthusiasm for the sport of men’s soccer. Enjoy the action! Sincerely,

Ron Ratner, Interim Commissioner Message To Spectators Northeast Conference member institutions value the principles of sportsmanship and the ideal of pursuing victory with honor in intercollegiate athletics. The Conference believes that athletics should be conducted in a way that reflects positively on the individual participants and institutions. The essential elements of sportsmanship and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of character building and seven core principles: respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty, integrity, caring and civility. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects these seven principles. The NEC has communicated this message through public service announcements that air on televised football and games, public address announcements at all events and signage on each member campus. The Conference also implemented a new Team Sportsmanship Award program in 2008-09 to recognize those teams and student-athletes who adhere to the principles of sportsmanship and pursue victory with honor. Saint Francis (PA) finished the year with a league-high six sportsmanship awards, which are voted on by student-athletes and coaches following the conclusion of each athletic sea- son.

In 2009-10, the NEC is partnering with the NCAA on a "Respect" campaign to address sportsmanship and fan behavior issues through education, communication and enforcement when problems arise. 2008 Championship Game Recap: Fairleigh Dickinson Captures Sixth NEC Men’s Soccer Championship With 7-2 Win Over Mount St. Mary’s West Long Branch, NJ -- Tournament Most Valuable Player Samson Malijani (Lusaka, Zambia/La Sapienza) recorded a hat trick and added an assist as second-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson pulled away for a 7-2 win over fourth-seeded Mount St. Mary’s in the title match of the 2008 NEC Men’s Soccer Tournament held at the Great Lawn in West Long Branch, NJ. It was the sixth NEC Tournament championship for the Knights, the most in league annals.

The seven goals for FDU established an NEC Tournament record, eclipsing the previous record of six set by the Knights in a 6-3 win over Long Island in the 1989 conference title game. The combined total of nine goals matched the nine in the aforementioned contest as the most in NEC Tournament history. Five different players scored for FDU on the afternoon.

Trailing by three goals, Mount freshman midfielder Ian Hendrie’s (Potomac, MD/St. Andrew’s Episcopal School) header off a corner got by Zaineh, but was swept off the line by the FDU defense in the 63rd minute. Malijani secured his hat trick with 13:54 remaining in the contest. It was Malijani’s fourth goal of the NEC Tournament and 18th of the year. The two teams combined for 41 shots on the afternoon with the Mount holding a 24-17 advantage. Mount St. Mary’s also totaled 11 corner kicks, compared to three for FDU.

Zaineh finished with nine saves for the Knights. The Mount’s Davis stopped four shots.
