  • Wild Edible Fruits of Colombia
Wild edible fruits of Colombia: diversity and use prospects Frutos silvestres comestibles de Colombia: diversidad y perspectivas de uso Diana López Diago , Néstor García Abstract Wild fruits have been an integral part of the diet of rural inhabitants in tropical America. In Colombia, information on the use of wild fruits appears scattered in the ethnobotanical literature and herbaria collections, limiting the design of conservation and use strategies. This review aims to synthesize information about the wild fruit species used in Colombia. We reviewed herbarium collections and literature references. We recorded 703 species in 76 families, among which Fabaceae (66 species), Arecaceae (58), and Passifloraceae (44) were the most diverse. The genera with more species were Inga (42), Passiflora (42), and Pouteria (21). Most species are widely distributed in tropical America, and only 45 (6.4 %) are endemic to Colombia. The regions with the largest number of species were the Amazon (388), Andes (144), and Pacific (111). Most of the recorded species, 613 (87.2 %), are exclusively wild, whereas 90 (12.8 %) are wild or cultivated. Wild edible fruits have a high potential for agriculture, novel products and nutritional improvement; however, it is vital to create strategies to revalorize their use. Keywords. Biodiversity. Ethnobotany. Underutilized species. Wild foods.

A few different classification methods have been elaborated for Garcinia species. These approaches however are not really practical in field identification because of inconvenience of transportation and usage of necessary scientific instruments to and from the field. The objective of this study was to carry out comprehensive systematic survey of Garcinia species using vegetative morphological characters. Variabilities among 30 accessions from 12 selected species of Garcinia vegetative were studied using standard unweighted pair group method using averages (UPGMA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analysed the diversity and to identify the optimum number of morphological traits which explain a high proportion of variability. Accessions similarity analyses were performed based on 23 vegetative morphological characters. The results suggest that the sampled accessions fall into five groups. Group 1 consist of 16 accessions which are from species G.

JNTBGRI Diversity of Garcinia species in the Western Ghats: Phytochemical Perspective Chapter 2 Structural diversity of secondary metabolites in Garcinia species A. P. Anu Aravind, Lekshmi N. Menon and K. B. Rameshkumar* Phytochemistry and Phytopharmacology Division Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute Palode, Thiruvananthapuram-695562, Kerala, India * Corresponding author Abstract Plants of the genus Garcinia produce structurally diverse secondary metabolites such as biflavonoids, xanthones, benzophenones, flavonoids, biphenyls, acyl phloroglucinols, depsidones and terpenoids. The rich diversity in chemical structures made the genus Garcinia attractive for the phytochemists. In addition, several industrial sectors such as cosmetic, food, pharmaceutics, neutraceutics and paints are centered around the genus. The genus is represented by more than 250 species, among which nearly 120 species were subjected to phytochemical investigation. A review of the structural diversity of secondary metabolites of Garcinia species revealed that xanthones are the important class of secondary metabolites, distributed in 74 Garcinia species, followed by benzophenones in 50 species and biflavonoids in 45 species. Biphenyls, acyl phloroglucinols, depsidones and flavonoids are some other interesting group of phenolic compounds in Garcinia species. The present chapter enlists the major phenolic compounds reported from Garcinia species. Keywords: Garcinia, Secondary metabolites, Xanthones, Biflavonoids, Benzophenones Introduction Plants

B. Rameshkumar who took Garcinia imberti as a subject for his doctoral studies. It gives me all the more pleasure and gratification to see that he continued with his studies on Garcinia species of the Western Ghats along with his students and colleagues. Unlike many other doctoral students, he kept alive his passion for the studies on Garcinia and the present book is the outcome of his dedicated efforts during the last one and a half decades. Pursuit of science is a passion and unravelling the subtleties of nature is an ecstasy which fulfils the inner urge for quest and discovery. The genus Garcinia is important by virtue of their reputation in traditional medicines, established pharmacological activities, diversity in chemical structures and potential nutritional properties. Despite recent progress in phytochemical and pharmacological studies on Garcinia species world over, significant gaps still exist concerning the exploration of the vast data on phytochemical diversity of Garcinia species.

Ogeron et al. Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2018) 14:28 https://doi.org/10.1186/s13002-018-0226-7 RESEARCH Open Access Palikur traditional roundwood construction in eastern French Guiana: ethnobotanical and cultural perspectives Clémence Ogeron1,2, Guillaume Odonne1* , Antonia Cristinoi3, Julien Engel4,5, Pierre Grenand1, Jacques Beauchêne6, Bruno Clair2 and Damien Davy1 Abstract Background: Palikur Amerindians live in the eastern part of French Guiana which is undergoing deep-seated changes due to the geographical and economic opening of the region. So far, Palikur’s traditional ecological knowledge is poorly documented, apart from medicinal plants. The aim of this study was to document ethnobotanical practices related to traditional construction in the region. Methods: A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Thirty-nine Palikur men were interviewed in three localities (Saint-Georges de l’Oyapock, Regina and Trois-Palétuviers) between December 2013 and July 2014. Twenty-four inventories of wood species used in traditional buildings were conducted in the villages, as well as ethnobotanical walks in the neighboring forests, to complete data about usable species and to determine Linnaean names. Results: After an ethnographic description of roundwood Palikur habitat, the in situ wood selection process of Palikur is precisely described. A total of 960 roundwood pieces were inventoried in situ according to Palikur taxonomy, of which 860 were beams and rafters, and 100 posts in 20 permanent and 4 temporary buildings. Twenty-seven folk species were identified. Sixty-three folk species used in construction were recorded during ethnobotanical walks. They correspond to 263 botanical species belonging to 25 families.
