Seite 62 Seite 4 BITS Querschnitt 2005 Liebe BITS-FreundInnen, wieder ist ein Jahr zu Ende. Und wieder hat BITS ein Jahr überstanden. 2005 wird sich demnächst in den Geschichtsbüchern wiederfinden. In der Erinnerung an das Jahr "sind wir Papst" und haben die erste Bundeskanzlerin. Beide Ereignisse könnten Eingang in die Bücher finden. Und wir? Auch für unser BITS endete das Jahr mit einer Überraschung – wir haben ein weiteres Jahr überstanden! Und das, obwohl es unser bisher schwerstes und arbeitsreichstes Jahr war. In den Medien ist BITS immer häufiger präsent – im Durchschnitt mehr als einmal an jedem Tag des letzten Jahres. Unsere Internetseite wächst und gedeiht. Sie hatte täglich erstmals mehr als 1.000 Besucher – Tendenz weiter steigend. Unsere Publikationen – darunter 2005 die erste deutsche Studie zur Bedeutung von Kompo- nenten für den deutschen Rüstungsexport - werden nicht nur oft nachgefragt, sondern auch in den Medien wahrgenommen. Die Informationsanfragen häufen sich. Manchmal schaffen wir es kaum noch, alle zu beantworten. All das ist passiert weitgehend kostenlos und so soll es möglichst auch bleiben. Das ist die eine Seite der Medaille. Die andere lautet: Je stärker unsere Arbeit nachgefragt wird, desto schwieriger wird das finanzielle Überleben. Es scheint, als bewirke unsere große Präsenz in Öffentlichkeit und Medien, dass alle glau- ben, es müsse uns auch finanziell gut gehen. Leider ist das Gegenteil der Fall: Das Ergebnis unserer ehrenamtlichen Arbeit ist inzwischen zu unserer wichtigsten Einnahmequelle geworden. Im vergan- genen Jahr haben die nur drei BITS-Mitarbeiter fast 30.000 €uro zum Etat von BITS beigetragen.

    Hezbollah’s Threat in Germany: AN UPDATED OVERVIEW OF ITS PRESENCE AND THE GERMAN RESPONSE Jasmine Williams (Research Assistant, ICT) Spring 2014 ABSTRACT Former CIA director, George Tenet testified that the capability and presence of Hezbollah is equal, if not more capable than that of al-Qaeda.1 Tenet made this statement in 2003, over a decade ago, and Hezbollah has only further expanded its operations as it continues to evolve and function as a hybrid organization with political, social, and terrorist components, as well as expanding its network outside of its home base of Lebanon. As many focus on the growing presence of Hezbollah operations in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa, Hezbollah’s presence in Europe is quite fascinating, Germany in particular. Within German borders, the group has built a strong presence, as there is known to be over 1000 operatives within its borders to date.1 It is important to note what factors have caused such localized German mobilization. This paper will provide an updated overview of Hezbollah operations in the Federal Republic of Germany and its government reaction and weaknesses. As a result of its lengthy occupation, it is virtually one large archaeological site. In spite of numerous warnings to the governments of both the United States and the United Kingdom, no efforts were made to protect the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad when the American-led coalition unlawfully invaded Iraq. Indeed, orders were given not to interfere with the looting. During the occupation that followed, the United States failed to take steps to protect Iraqi cultural property.
