VARANASI

Popularly known as Benares, Banaras, Benaras, Varanasi, Kashi. Nickname of Varanasi is “The spiritual capital of India” Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together. "-Mark Twain" Kasi or Varanasi is one of the most ancient, famous and holiest of the pilgrim centres. It is situated between two small streams that flow into the river Ganges, Varana on its northern border and Asi (or Assi) on its southern border, from whom it derives its name Varanasi. The name Kasi is derived from either its original founder or a dynasty that ruled it or the kingdom with which it was associated. According to another theory the place might have got its name from a grass named Kusa that grew wildly in the region where the city was built.

Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. It is often referred to as Benares, and is the oldest living city in the world.

Varanasi is the home of Lord and but its origin is yet unknown. About Varanasi it is a belief of Hindus that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth. It is also believed that Ganges in Varanasi has the power to wash away the sins of mortals.

“THE CITY OF SHIVA” VEDIC ERA OF VARANASI

According to Varanasi was founded by Lord Shiva and so is still called ‘The City of Shiva’; and in the city devotion to God Shiva can be seen in abundance.

From its own eyes Banaras has seen the Vedic religion flourishing. In ancient Hind scriptures such as , Upnishadas and several references to Kashi are frequently found.

Since the beginning of the history of Banaras holds a divine and important status. It was referred as the holiest city of all in Upanishadas.

LIFE OF BUDDHISM STARTED IN BENARAS IN BUDDHIST ERA

In the Buddhist Era as well, Banaras continued to keep its status of importance. There is lot about the city in Buddhist texts. The ship of Buddhism first sailed circa 528 BC, at the place known as Sarnath near Banaras, when Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon. It is believed by some scholars that as Banaras held significant power and importance in India that time so Buddha started the life of Buddhism here in Banaras only. The preaching’s of Buddha and Buddhism is significant enough to affect the religious belief of entire India.

Among the sixteen Mahajanpadas (refers to the sixteen kingdoms and oligarchic republics) of sixth to fourth centuries BC, Kashi was one of them with Varanasi as its Capital. Before the era of Buddha, among the sixteen mahajanpadas of India, Kashi was the most powerful.

BOATING IN THE GANGA

Boating in the mystic environment of Varanasi in the morning time is really a spectacular thing. Boating along the Dashwamedh Ghat and Assi Ghat has now become the tradition for the visitors. Boat ride is a must do activity in Varanasi. Usually visitors use to ride boat either at the dusk or at the dawn and also this is the best time to ride.

ENJOY GANGA AARTI IN THE EVENING Varanasi become more vibrant in the evening at 7p.m. It is the time for the magnificent and holy Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh ghat. At the time of Aarti number of devotees, tourists and locals gathered around the ghat to enjoy the aarti. A group of priests starts aarti in a well organised manner by having a lighting lamp in their hand, start a rhythmic chant of mantras. Priests blow the conch shell in between the aarti very loudly and aarti continues with the incense sticks. After completion of the mantras, priests do aarti with multi-tiered brass lamps having firing camphor.

GANGA AARTI

Varanasi is a sacred and oldest city of the world located at the banks of the holy River Ganga. Where, Ganga aarti is performed daily in the evening by a group of priests at the Dashashwamedh ghat. Through the aarti, Pooja is performed in which a commitment is made to the Lord Shiva, Mata Ganga, Surya, Agni (Fire) as well as the whole universe made by the Lord Shiva. On some special occasions, religious festivals and second day of the week means Tuesdays, a particular type of aarti is held at this ghat.

Ganga aarti is the magnificent event during evening in the Varanasi that one must not miss to see it. It makes us to experience the great feelings while Ganga aarti become in process. This beautiful ritual makes every moment of the evening period special and fills with the spiritual thoughts. It is performed by the brass lamps which accompanied with the mantra chant in the presence of the huge crowd.

All the priests who have to perform the aarti, wear same cloth, the dhoti and kurta which is tightly bind with a long towel. First, they make preparation of the Ganga aarti by making collection of the five elevated planks, a multi-tiered oil lamp, an idol of the Goddess Ganga, flowers, incense sticks, a conch shell, a big and heavy brass lamp having a snake hood at the edge of the River Ganga. A group of boats filled with devotees come around the place of aarti at the bank of River. They are very eager to see the event; some of them take live video, photos as well. Ritual of the Ganga aarti is performed by the students of the Vedas and which is lead by the head priest of the Gangotri Samiti. The whole event takes around 45 minutes.

PRAYAGRAJ

SANGAM

This is the point where the brown water of the Ganga meets the green water of the Yamuna, along with the mythical Sarasvati, which remains unseen but believed to run underground. It is located about 7 km from Civil Lines, overlooked by the eastern ramparts of the Akbar Fort.

Wide flood plains and muddy banks protrude towards the sacred Sangam. At the mid-river point priests perch on small platforms to perform and assist the devout in their ritual ablutions in the shallow waters. A dip in the Sangam water is supposed to be the holiest of the holy pilgrimages for the devout Hindu. Boats to the Sangam can be rented by pilgrims and tourists alike at the ghat near the fort. It is during the Maha Kumbh/Kumbh that the Sangam truly comes alive, attracting the devout from all across the country.

KUMBH MELA

Prayag in modern-day Prayagraj is believed to be the most important pilgrimage centre for Hindus. Traditionally river confluences are regarded as auspicious places, but in Sangam, the significance of the confluence is most pious because here, the holy Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati meet to become one.

According to legends, Vishnu was carrying a Kumbh (pot) of amrit (nectar), when a scuffle broke out and four drops were spilled. They fell to earth at the four Tirthas of Prayag, Haridwar, Nasik and Ujjain. A is a place where the devout can attain salvation. The event is commemorated every three years by the , held at each tirtha in turn; the Sangam is known as Tirtharaj, the ‘King of Tirthas’ and here the Kumbh is held once in every twelve years, which is the greatest and holiest of all.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the largest religious congregation in India, attended by millions. The over month-long fair is marked by the construction of a massive tented township, complete with cottages, huts, platforms, civic facilities, administrative and security measures. It is organized immaculately by the government, the local authorities and the police. The mela is especially renowned for the presence of an extraordinary array of religious ascetics – and mahants – enticed from remote hideaways in forests, mountains and caves. Once astrologers have determined the propitious bathing time or Kumbhayog, the first to hit the water is by legions of Naga Sadhus or Naga Babas, who cover their naked bodies with ash and wear hair in long dreadlocks. The sadhus, who see themselves as guardians of the faith, approach the confluence at the scheduled time with all the pomp and bravado of a charging army. The most recent Maha Kumbh Mela was held in 2013 and the next is due in 2025.

ALLAHABAD FORT

The massive fort built by Emperor Akbar in 1583 A.D. stands on the banks of the Yamuna, close to the confluence site. In its prime, the fort was unrivalled for its design, construction and craftsmanship. This huge, majestic fort has three magnificent galleries flanked by high towers. At present it is used by the army and only a limited area is open to visitors. The magnificent outer wall is intact and rises above the water’s edge. Visitors are allowed to see the Ashokan Pillar and Saraswati Koop, a well said to be the source of the Saraswati river and Jodhabai Palace. The gigantic Ashoka pillar of polished sandstone stands 10.6 meters high, dating back to 232 B.C. The pillar has several edicts and a Persian inscription of Emperor Jahangir inscripted on it, commemorating his accession to the throne. The Patalpuri temple and the much revered Akshaya Vat or immortal Banyan tree are also great attractions for the faithful. Within this underground temple, inside the fort, lies the Akshaya Vat – or the immortal tree. Believed to have been visited by Lord Rama, the temple was also seen by the famous Chinese traveler and writer Hiuen Tsang during his visit to this place.

GAYA

HISTORY OF GAYA

When actually Lord Rama Chandra came to Gaya to offer Pinda Daan to his Father Dashratha? It is believed that Rama belonged to Treta Yuga, This yuga covered 12,96,000 mortal years. After Treta, came Dwapar yugacovering 8,64,000 mortal years. This is the yuga. The period is to cover another 4,32,000 mortal years. In such a situation Rama came to Gaya for offering oblation to his deceased father more than 12 lakh years ago. And the pinddaan in Gaya Ji practice for the salvation of a soul was in vogue since long and still continues to be an integral part of Hindu mythology.

Gaya finds mention in the great epics, and . In Mahabharat, the place has been identified as Gayapuri. Gaya derives its name from the mythological demon Gayasur (which literally means Gaya the holy demon), demon (asur, a Sanskrit word) and Gaya. Over its history dating millennia, the word asur got deleted and the name Gaya remained in currency.

YAMA TEMPLE IN PRETSHILA HILL

Pretshila Hill, meaning the Hill of Ghosts is situated at a distance of eight kilometres of Gaya. It is one of the most sacred sites in Gaya for the Hindus where they come down to offer pind-daan, the ritual performed for the peace of a deceased’s soul. Situated at the top of the hill is the temple dedicated to the prayer of Lord Yama, the God of Death as per the mythology of the Hindus.

This temple dates back years ago, but nobody is able to provide an exact time frame as to when this religious site was constructed. It is believed to have been constructed by the Queen of Indore, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. However, the temple has since then undergone multiple renovations. Another attraction of this temple is the Ramkund Tank that stands very close to the temple. The locals believe that Lord Rama had bathed at that tank once, and ever since then, it has become a beacon of holiness. Hindus believe a bath in the tank has the power to dissolve the sins done by a person.

KOTESHWARNATH TEMPLE

Baba Koteshwarnath Temple is situated in Village Main, Block Belaganj, District Gaya. The temple is situated on the confluence of the river Morhar & Dargha in Gaya, is famous for highly sacred Lord Shiva Temple. Koteshwarnath temple is believed to have been built around 8th century AD. Koteshwarnath temple's sanctum is carved in a single piece of red stone and within it is installed a large sized Shivalinga with around 1,008 miniature Shivlingas around 1200 years back.

It says that Vanasur's Main & DevKund was situated in a deep forest. Usha used to visit the temple to offer prayers during which Lord Shiva appeared & told her to establish a Sahashtra Linga to get her wish full filled. After that Usha established the Shiva Linga. In result of that Lord Shiva granted her wish and she got married with Aniruddha, grandson of Lord her husband with whom she went on to live her life.

The place is known as “Shiv Nagar” in ancient times. There is a reference that Sahastra Shiv Ling idol was established at the end of Dwapar Yuga. This Shiv Ling was established by Usha, daughter of King Vanasur of Sonitpur. It's a belief that a pilgrimage to this place is powerful enough to full fill all the wishes and desires of the one who comes here. Quite Evidently, every year in the month of Saawan devotees throng this temple to offer prayers.
