A REFLECTION BY FATHER BILL HERIC SCRIPTURE READINGS Dear Friends in Christ, & DAILY ood news! The church begins the great season of FEBRUARY 23rd GLent this week on “Ash Wednesday” which this year is Reading 1, Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18 February 26. Blessed Ashes will be distributed at our 9:00AM Psalms 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13 Liturgy of the Word (I am at Blanchet for their school Reading 2, First Corinthians 3:16-23 Mass) and also at Mass at 7:00PM. As we receive ashes, we Gospel, Matthew 5:38-48 are encouraged to “Turn away from sin, and be faithful to the gospel.”

FEBRUARY 24th Ash Wednesday and Fridays in Lent are also days when Catholics ages 14-59 are Reading 1, James 3:13-18 obliged to abstain from all meat products. Those outside of that age range are Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 15 encouraged to abstain if possible. Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting from Gospel, Mark 9:14-29 one meal and food in between for those 18-59. The blessing of abstinence and Blessed Luke Belludi fasting is threefold: To demonstrate sorrow for our sins; to exercise our ability to self-control our appetites; and to empty ourselves to make room to be filled up FEBRUARY 25th by the presence of the risen Lord at the great feast of Easter! Reading 1, James 4:1-10 Psalms 55:7-8, 9-10, 10-11, 23 I encourage everyone to consider how you will embrace the traditional disciplines Gospel, Mark 9:30-37 of Lent, through increased prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As you decide what Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio will be of greatest spiritual value to you, consider the following Lenten Litany of Fasting and Feasting by William Arthur Ward: FEBRUARY 26th (Ash Wed.) Fast from judging others; feast on the Christ within them. Reading 1, 2:12-18 Fast from emphasis on differences; feast on the unity of life. Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17 Fast from thoughts of illness; feast on the healing power of God. Reading 2, Second Corinthians 5:20-- Fast from words that pollute; feast on phrases that purify. 6:2 Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude. Gospel, Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18 Fast from anger; feast on patience. Saint Maria Bertilla Boscardin Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. FEBRUARY 27th Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives. Reading 1, Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast on unceasing prayer. Psalms 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 Fast from hostility; feast on non-resistance. Gospel, Luke 9:22-25 Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Saint of Our Lady of Sorrows Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from personal anxiety; feast on eternal truth. FEBRUARY 28th Fast from discouragement; feast on hope. Reading 1, 58:1-9 Fast from lethargy; feast on enthusiasm. Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 18-19 Fast from suspicion; feast on truth. Gospel, Matthew 9:14-15 Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire. Blessed Daniel Brottier Fast from shadows of sorrow; feast on the sunlight of sincerity. Fast from idle gossip; feast on purposeful silence. FEBRUARY 29th Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that undergirds. Reading 1, Isaiah 58:9-14 Fast from instant gratifications; feast on self-denial. Psalms 86:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 Fast from worry; feast on divine order. Trust in God. Gospel, Luke 5:27-32 And finally, fast from sin; feast on the abundance of God’s mercy. Saint Oswald To conclude, please join me in thanking Liz Houlihan for her many years of MARCH 1st generous service to St. Bridget’s Parish.
