Every Blessing, Please join me in thanking all of the parish leadership and volunteers dedicated to answering the call of the Spirit this summer at Saint David’s Kristen L. I would also ask that you join me in welcoming back the Reverend Stuart A. Kenworthy, his wife, 1 WARDENS’ REPORT Dear Members of St. David's: For many churches, this time of year marks a time when many start to take time off from church activities. After all, Sunday School has concluded for the year, students are graduating and families are planning vacations. For St. David's, this summer will once again be different. After launching her tenure here with tremendous success and enthusiasm, Rev. Hawley will soon embark on maternity leave in preparation of welcoming her new baby to the Hawley family. Rev. Stuart Kenworthy, who so ably led St. David's as our interim minister during our transition period, will resume his role as interim minister while Kristen is away. Our seminarian, Melesa Skoglund is scheduled to return from maternity leave. Committees will meet, work on Capital Campaign projects will continue, and the Vestry will once again meet over the summer months. Clearly, St. David's is continuing to experiencing a real growth trajectory. Additionally, there have been several major life events since the publication of the last issue of Glad Tidings. St. David's welcomed two members to the church community with the baptism of William Lucas Weidner and the confirmation of Christine Arnold. Sadly, the church also lost two members as funeral services were held for Athlestan Frederick "Fred" Spilhaus, Jr., PhD, and Elizabeth Beach "Betsy" Rea. May their families find comfort and may they both rest in peace. Finally, many of you probably know that St. David's - along with many other churches - historically experience a dip in cash flow over the summer months. This is completely understandable as many parishioners are away. As St. David's needs to meet financial obligations every month of the year, perhaps parishioners can make an extra effort to continue contributing over the summer. Thanks for the opportunity to serve as your Senior Warden, and we look forward to seeing many of you soon. Faithfully, Stephen T. Sears Senior Warden 2 SAINT DAVID'S SUMMER CHOIR OPEN TO ALL! From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the regular St David’s choir is on summer break. During the summer season, we typically have one choir member each Sunday to help lead the congregation in hymn singing. This summer, we are creating a new volunteer Summer Choir to lead the congregation in hymn singing. The Summer Choir will be open to all! One member from our regular choir will be there each week to help out as well. So, if any of you enjoy singing, why not consider giving the Summer Choir a try? There is no firm weekly commitment and no difficult music to learn. The Summer Choir will practice 30 minutes before the 10am service on Sunday mornings (coffee is provided), practice the hymns and the join in the processional, leading the congregation in song for the hymns that morning from the chancel. Please see me on Sunday or email me at [email protected] with questions or to sign up. Looking forward to singing with you this summer! Rob Church. DEADLINES FOR BRINGING CASSEROLES: JUNE 13, 2018 So Others Might Eat (SOME) provides hot meals to the hungry in our city. St. David's contributes casseroles once a month. Casserole recipes and pans are available in the Commonwealth Room and in the undercroft lobby. Casseroles are due on the Monday before the third Wednesday of each month. If you would like to coordinate the deliveries for this ministry, please contact the Parish Office. Total time involved from arrival at St. David's to return to St. David's is about two hours. Flower Guild Semi Annual Meeting The St. David’s Flower Guild will meet on Sunday, June 10 in the Wicker Room following the 10 am service. It is hoped that all members will attend. The flower arranging schedule for the next six months will be decided, housekeeping matters and the handbook will be discussed, and there will be a brief demonstration of mechanics. He founded around 10 monasteries and was known for his simple way of life and asceticism; he taught his followers to refrain from eating meat and drinking anything but water. The miracle most commonly associated with St David is said to have taken place whilst he was preaching to a large crowd at the Synod of Brefi. It is said that the ground on which he was stood rose up to form a small hill, in order for everyone to see him. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Prayer: God, on this day, we remember Saint David, your servant. • The Credible Witness: Bede’S Response to Doubt1
THE CREDIBLE WITNESS: BEDE’S RESPONSE TO DOUBT1 Stephen C. Sharman, PhD University of Wales, Trinity Saint David (Lampeter) Independent Scholar, Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada Abstract: This paper focuses on miracle accounts in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History, especially accounts of visions of divine light, and argues that in order to understand the meaning and rationale of such accounts Bede’s understanding of the reliability and trustworthiness of his witnesses also needs to be considered. The paper argues that Bede attributes to those witnesses whom he perceives as credible in these matters not only rational and moral but also certain religious qualifications, which enable them to perceive and understand the spiritual meaning of the events which they relate and thus underpin their credibility. Doubt is something which historians must always face as they strive to provide trustworthy accounts of events in the past. Bede responds to doubt and at the same time establishes his own credentials as a trustworthy historian by describing the people whom he has consulted for their knowledge of the English past.2 These people are his credible witnesses. Since accounts of miracles are especially open to doubt, Bede responded by identifying the witnesses of the miracles and establishing their credibility. These witnesses had the ability to see the miracles accurately, to report honestly what they had experienced and to discern their meanings, in short, their moral and religious qualifications. Their moral qualifications and their religious qualifications must be carefully distinguished. The moral qualifications such as honesty and good works made them accurate reporters. The religious qualifications such as their ecclesiastical status as bishops or priests or religious sisters or monks and their monastic education enabled them in addition to understand the spiritual meaning of their experiences.
