Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

As he does in Peace, Aristophanes mocks the lower-class, populist politician Hyperbolus, but Millar is smart enough to include a speech where the playwright is upbraided for his aristocratic disdain. At the same time, Aristophanes, the great comic dramatist, is struggling with the production of his latest offering for the Dionysia Festival — a controversial new work entitled Peace. Pamukkale Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Dergisi Sayı 25/1,2016, Sayfa 230-238 COMIC VISION AND COMIC ELEMENTS OF THE 18TH CENTURY NOVEL MOLL FLANDERS BY DANIEL DEFOE Gülten SİLİNDİR∗ Abstract “It is hard to think about the art of fiction without thinking about the art of comedy, for the two have always gone together, hand in hand” says Malcolm Bradbury, because the comedy is the mode one cannot avoid in a novel. Bradbury asserts “the birth of the long prose tale was, then the birth of new vision of the human comedy and from that time it seems prose stories and comedy have never been far apart” (Bradbury, 1995: 2). The time when the novel prospers is the time of the development of the comic vision. The comic novelist Iris Murdoch in an interview in 1964 states that “in a play it is possible to limit one’s scope to pure tragedy or pure comedy, but the novel is almost inevitably an inclusive genre and breaks out of such limitations. Can one think of any great novel which is without comedy? I can’t.” According to Murdoch, the novel is the most ideal genre to adapt itself to tragicomedy. Moll Flanders is not a pure tragedy or pure comedy. On the one hand, it conveys a tragic and realistic view of life; on the other hand, tragic situations are recounted in a satirical way. Moll’s struggles to live, her subsequent marriages, her crimes for money are all expressed through parody. The aim of this study is to analyze 18th century social life, the comic scenes and especially the satire in the novel by describing the novel’s techniques of humor. -

Comedy, Satire, and Laughter in 18th-Century Britain Instructor: Thomas Leonard-Roy ([email protected]) What do people find funny? What are the ethics of comedy, laughter, and satire, and what are their social and political functions? What is the relationship between comedy and violence, misery, and cruelty? How have the forms and standards of comedy changed over time? In this course, we will address these questions by diving deep into the great age of British comedy and satire, the eighteenth century. Now, in the digital age, we are witnessing a dizzying proliferation of comic forms, as well as urgent debates about the ethics of comedy and satire. Yet such phenomena and debates are not new. In this course, we’ll explore an astonishing range of comic forms and theories of laughter in order to better understand the past and our current moment. We’ll study comic novels, poetry, drama, ballad opera, and visual art, as well as more fugitive genres such as jestbooks and puppet shows. We will read these texts alongside critical and theoretical readings, including theories of laughter and jokes from Thomas Hobbes to Sigmund Freud, as well as exemplary social history and literary criticism. As we immerse ourselves in eighteenth-century comedy, we’ll trace its roots in Aristophanes, François Rabelais, and Miguel de Cervantes, as well as its afterlife in recent adaptations and period films, including Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006) and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite (2018). This approach will allow us to think deeper about the multivalent history of comedy, including the comic origins of the European novel and the uneasy relationship between satire and sympathy. -

Comprehensive Examination Rationale Brian Trapp Exam Areas 20th Century American Fiction History of the Novel Overview For my reading year, I focused on the History of the Novel and 20th Century American Fiction. I had several goals: 1) to fill some gaps in my knowledge of the major aesthetic movements of the modern era, particularly in relation to form and cultural/intellectual context. 2) to investigate the literary experiments of realism, romanticism, naturalism, modernism, postmodernism and after, so that I could better understand the literary traditions I draw from in my own creative work, and help my students connect literary practice with aesthetic philosophy. 3) to investigate specific areas of interest in disability studies, modernism, and the comic novel. I formulated these interests in connection with my own creative project: a comic novel featuring a disabled main character using literary techniques that continue the modernist experiments with interiority, irony and epistemological doubt. However, the further I read into my lists, the more I saw connections and intersections between these modules, and my lists in general. I see many of the works the American fiction and History of the Novel lists to be centered on an ambivalence toward and critique of the modern, liberal, humanist self, a product of the Enlightenment and codified by Kant, which is defined as possessing autonomy, agency, and rationality (see Shildrick and Wolfe). Modernism critiques this construct through experiments with character (see Levenson), non-linear narrative, and fragmentation, just to name a few elements, while postmodernism intensifies this critique through metafictional play, suspicion of metanarratives, and indeterminacy. -

What does this example suggest about the future of children’s books co-opting the visual language of comic books? 2 Schnatz The visual language of comics has slowly permeated American popular culture since the first regular newspaper strip, Richard Felton Outcault’s The Yellow Kid, back in 1895. From the on- omatopoetic visuals in the campy ’60s Batman television series and pop art paintings of Roy Lichtenstein, to the never-ending string of superhero-based blockbuster movies today, comics have been co-opted and adapted to almost every medium imaginable. -

In One Hundred Years of Solitude , he wants to reconstruct the lost world of childhood by using magical realism which gives expression to the world - view of a rural people who live in isolation from modern world. By retelling the official history from the perspective of the oppressed, he r eveals the fact that history is never factual and impartial but serves the interest of those who write it. Through the banana company massacre and the subsequent hide and seek over the number of dead workers, Márquez exposes the way official history become s fabricated and distorted by authorities, and fails to provide the original occurrences. He was disgusted with the political violence and civil wars which had distraught people; he was also against capitalism, scientific and technological inventions, and so - called modernization, which are the means through which foreign culture brings corruption and brutality, dominates, exploits and oppresses the natives, and threatens the native culture and identity. By employing magical realism, he was able to recreate Colombian history to protest against the way capitalism dominated the socio - political and economic structure of the region.
