Resource partitioning among five sympatric mammalian herbivores on Yanakie Isthmus, south- eastern Australia Naomi Ezra Davis Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2010 Department of Zoology The University of Melbourne i Abstract This thesis combines multiple approaches to improve our understanding of large herbivore ecology and organisation in a contemporary assemblage made up of species with independent evolutionary histories on Yanakie Isthmus, Wilsons Promontory National Park, Victoria, Australia. In particular, this thesis compares niche parameters among populations of five sympatric native and introduced herbivore species by simultaneously assessing overlap in resource use along two dimensions (spatial and trophic) at multiple scales, thereby providing insight into resource partitioning and competition within this herbivore assemblage. Faecal pellet counts demonstrated that inter-specific overlap in herbivore habitat use on Yanakie Isthmus was low, suggesting that spatial partitioning of habitat resources had occured. However, resource partitioning appeared to be independent of coevolutionary history. Low overlap in habitat use implies low competition, and the lack of clear shifts in habitat use from preferred to suboptimal habitats suggested that inter-specific competition was not strong enough to cause competitive exclusion. However, low overlap in habitat use between the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus and other species, and preferential use by rabbits (and avoidance by other species) of the habitat that appeared to have the highest carrying capacity, suggested that rabbits excluded other grazing herbivores from preferred habitat. High overlap in habitat use was apparent between some species, particularly grazers, indicating some potential for competition if resources are limiting. -

Comparative illustrations and notes on morphology and biology are provided on the immature stages of five Arg- ynnis spp. (A. cybele leto, A. coronis simaetha, A. zerene picta, A. egleis mcdunnoughi, A. hydaspe rhodope) found in the Pacific Northwest. High quality images allowed separation of the five species in most of their immature stages. Sixth instars of all species possessed a fleshy, eversible osmeterium-like gland located ventrally between the head and first thoracic segment. Dormant first in- star larvae of all species exposed to summer-like conditions (25 ± 0.5º C and continuous illumination), 2.0–2.5 months after hatch- ing, did not feed and died within 6–9 days, indicating the larvae were in diapause. Overwintering of first instars for ~ 80 days in dark- ness at 5 ± 0.5º C, 75 ± 5% r.h. resulted in minimal mortality. Subsequent exposure to summer-like conditions (25 ± 0.5º C and continuous illumination) resulted in breaking of dormancy and commencement of feeding in all species within 2–5 days. Whalen School of Biological Sciences, Flinders University, Adelaide 29 March 1998 Summary Within the Euphorbiaceae, many species have seeds that bear an appendage called a caruncle, although carunculate seeds have a sporadic taxonomic distribution, with some euphorb genera containing both carunculate and ecarunculate species (Webster 1994). The euphorb caruncle is often assumed to function as an elaiosome, that is, as an appendage that facilitates seed dispersal by ants, or myrmecochory. This assumption has received very little quantitative or experimental verification. Our work on the euphorb Adriana concentrated on determining whether or not carunculate seeds are dispersed by ants and whether or not the caruncle is an attractant to seed-dispersing ants. Together, the field and laboratory choice trials indicated that the caruncle is attractive to ants and that carunculate seeds are particularly attractive to omnivorous ants of the genera Rhytidoponera and Iridomyrmex. Since elaiosomes have been hypothesised to have evolved so as to resemble arthropods in their fatty acid composition, we compared the fatty acid compositions of blowflies and Adriana seed and caruncles. Blowflies resembled Adriana caruncles in having relatively low concentrations (10%) of linoleic acid and intermediate concentrations (18%) of palmitic acid, in contrast to Adriana seeds which have relatively high concentrations (62%) of linoleic acid and relatively low concentrations (5%) of palmitic acid. -

ELECTRONIC SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL Prehistorical Climate Change Increased Diversification of a Group of Butterflies Carlos Peña, Niklas Wahlberg 2. SUPPLEMENTARY METHODS 1. Taxon Sampling. We included 77 representative genera from the satyrine clade sensu( Wahlberg et al., 2003) as represented in Ackery et al. s (1999) classification for Charaxinae and Amathusiini, Lamas (2004) s for Morphini and Brassolini, including all major lineages in Satyrinae found in our previous paper (Peña et al., 2006), and two outgroup genera (Libythea and Danaus). All sequences have been deposited in GenBank. Appendix S1 shows the sampled species in their current taxonomic classification and GenBank accession numbers. 2. DNA isolation. We extracted DNA from two butterfly legs, dried or freshly conserved in 96% alcohol and kept at -80C until DNA extraction. Total DNA was isolated using QIAGEN s DNeasy extraction kit (Hilden, Germany) following the manufacturer s instructions. 3. PCR amplification. For each species, we amplified five nuclear genes and one mitochondrial gene by PCR using published primers (Table S1). Amplification was performed in 20 µL volume PCR reactions: 12.5 µL distilled water, 2.0 µL 10x buffer, 2.0 µL MgCl, 1.0 µL of each primer, 0.4 µL dNTP, 0.1 µL of AmpliTaq Gold polymerase and 1.0 µL of DNA extract. The reaction cycle profile consisted in a denaturation phase at 95C for 5 min, followed by 35 cycles of denaturation at 94C for 30s, annealing at 47 55C (depending on primers) for 30s, 72C for 1 min 30s, and a final extension period of 72C for 10 min. 4. -
Coastal Garden Plants Brochure
Introduction This brochure is an indication of some of the native plants found in the dunes of the City of Charles Sturt. It is not an exhaustive list, but contains representative plants that fill different niches; groundcovers, climbers, small and large shrubs. The plants selected are well adapted to their environment (low maintenance/drought tolerant) and are recommended as garden plants along the coastal strip. This information has been adapted from Vegetation Management Plans that have been completed for the City of Charles Sturt by the Department for Environment and Heritage.
