Ryan, S.J. Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society Let me begin on holy ground, Ireland. In 1931 William Butler Yeats concluded his short poem, “Remorse for Intemperate Speech,” with a stanza that speaks to me as the person I am, for better or for worse: Out of Ireland have we come. Ireland is, indeed, a small place, and it has seen great fanaticism and hatred, although the temperature of Ireland as a whole has subsided dramatically since the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, despite Boris Johnson. The whole island of Ireland today occupies 32,599 square miles. British-administered Northern Ireland includes 5,340 of those square miles. Combined Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland approximate the size of Indiana. The total population of the island of Ireland is 6.7 million people, about a half a million more than the population of Indiana. There is another place of “great hatred, little room” that I wish to discuss this evening: the Holy Land, made up today of the State of Israel and the Palestinian autonomous regions of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. -
Radicalization of the Settlers' Youth: Hebron As a Hub for Jewish Extremism
© 2014, Global Media Journal -- Canadian Edition Volume 7, Issue 1, pp. 69-85 ISSN: 1918-5901 (English) -- ISSN: 1918-591X (Français) Radicalization of the Settlers’ Youth: Hebron as a Hub for Jewish Extremism Geneviève Boucher Boudreau University of Ottawa, Canada Abstract: The city of Hebron has been a hub for radicalization and terrorism throughout the modern history of Israel. This paper examines the past trends of radicalization and terrorism in Hebron and explains why it is still a present and rising ideology within the Jewish communities and organization such as the Hilltop Youth movement. The research first presents the transmission of social memory through memorials and symbolism of the Hebron hills area and then presents the impact of Meir Kahana’s movement. As observed, Hebron slowly grew and spread its population and philosophy to the then new settlement of Kiryat Arba. An exceptionally strong ideology of an extreme form of Judaism grew out of those two small towns. As analyzed—based on an exhaustive ethnographic fieldwork and bibliographic research—this form of fundamentalism and national-religious point of view gave birth to a new uprising of violence and radicalism amongst the settler youth organizations such as the Hilltop Youth movement. The Problem With Jacob: Viewing our Forefather Honestly Parashat Va-yeitzei, Genesis 28:10-32:3 | By Mark Greenspan “Personal Integrity” by Kassel Abelson (pp. 360) in The Observant Life Introduction It‟s hard not to feel uneasy when reading about our forefather, Jacob. Even before he is born, Jacob battles Esau for the birthright. Twice in his youth Jacob callously manipulates circumstances in order to gain both the birthright and the patriarchal blessing. The Torah never criticizes our forefather‟s actions, but it suggests that the consequence of his actions leads to misery. His duplicitousness leads to treachery, first by his father- in -law to be, and later by his sons. Having deceived others, others now deceive him. Still, the Torah never questions Jacob‟s method of attaining the birthright and the blessing. In the real world of the Torah (and our society) shrewdness is often admired even when it takes place at another person‟s expense. Worst of all, the sages depict Esau as a wicked person while Jacob is the righteous son. Wasn‟t Esau the victim of dishonesty? We struggle with questions of honesty and personal integrity in our daily lives. We promise (in court) to tell “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” but there are circumstances in which honesty may not necessary be the best policy. In the business world, dishonesty is all too common (Let the buyer beware). When is a lie or a falsehood justified? Should our adherence to the truth be unequivocal and absolute? If the world rests on “truth, justice and peace,” (Pirkei Avot 1:18) how can we justify telling even a little white lie? How do we reconcile the ideal world of halakhah, “You shall not deal deceitfully with one another,” (Leviticus 19:11) with the real world of the Biblical narrative in which falsehood is common place and often rewarded? Genesis 37 with the revelation of a dysfunctional family. Emotions run hot, and divisions run deep. There are hints of what is to come, But before we start, let’s take a quick look back. A Quick Overview of Genesis • Gen 1-11: Creation, Rebellion, and Redemption (Adam to Babel) Understand Genesis, and human history and the Bible • Gen 12-25: God’s Promise and the Journey of Faith (Abraham) makes sense. • Gen 26-36: Deception and Destiny (the descendants of Abraham) • Gen 37-50: Integrity Under Fire (Joseph, his brothers, and Egypt) We’ve divided Genesis into four sections. Genesis 1-11 tells the story of creation, of Adam and Eve falling into A Dreamer and a Dysfunctional Family (2-11) sin, of the world becoming increasingly evil until God • Don’t try this at home!
