TANG THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Performance and Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Rudolf Haken, Chair Associate Professor Katherine Syer, Director of Research Associate Professor Scott Schwartz Professor Stephen Taylor Clinical Assistant Professor Elizabeth Freivogel Abstract As a pioneer viola virtuoso of the 20th century, Emanuel “Manny” Vardi (c. 1915-2011) is most widely recognized as the first violist to record all of Paganini’s Caprices. As a passionate advocate for the viola as a solo instrument, Vardi premiered and championed now-standard repertoire, elevated the technique of violists by his virtuosic example, and inspired composers to write more demanding new repertoire for the instrument. However, the details of his long and diverse career have never to date been explored in depth or in a comprehensive manner. This thesis presents the first full biographical narrative of Vardi’s life: highlighting his work with the NBC Symphony under Arturo Toscanini, his activities as a soloist for the United States Navy Band during World War II, his compositional output, visual artwork, an analysis of his playing and teaching techniques, as well as his performing and recording legacies in classical, jazz, and popular music. Appendices include a chronology of his life, discography, lists of compositions written by and for Vardi, registered copyrights, and a list of interviews conducted by the author with family members, former students, and colleagues.

LOUIS JOHNSON Approfondimenti a cura di Riccardo Pantella LOUIS JOHNSON “ THUNDER-THUMBS “ Quando si parla della tecnica dello Slap spesso vengono in mente i soliti nomi di grandi musicisti, ad esempio Larry Graham che si sostiene ne sia l’inventore. Ma è impossibile parlare di questa tecnica e non citare Louis Johnson, che di certo è stato uno dei pionieri ed ha contribuito a svilupparne la tecnica. Per via del suo stile distintivo venne soprannominato Thunder-Thumbs. Da non sottovalutare le sue numerose collaborazioni come session man. Tra le più importanti potremmo citare l’album “Thriller” di Michael Jackson. Probabilmente ciò che ha dato un grande contributo alla sua carriera è stata la sua ampia musicalità e senso ritmico. BIOGRAFIA Nato a Los Angeles il 13 Aprile del 1955, Louis ﬁn da subito mostrò un forte interesse per la musica. Suo padre regalò presto una chitarra a lui e a suo fratello George, che subito cominciarono a suonare a turno. Louis era attratto dalle note gravi e cominciò a suonare le linee di basso che ascoltava sui dischi di artisti come James Brown, The Temptations and The Supremes.. Fu così che suo padre decise di regalargli un basso, e passò poco tempo prima che Johnson cominciò a strappare e percuotere le corde per dare più groove a ciò che suonava. Tutto questo si è evoluto nella tecnica dello Slap, rendendolo un musicista di fama mondiale. Mentre era ancora a scuola a Los Angeles, insieme al fratello George e il cugino Alex Weir formarono i “Three Plus One”. Band che si è subito evoluta in un contesto professionale condividendo palchi con artisti come The Supremes e Bobby Womack.

“You can’t run away from it! The melody will always appear!” Yaa Amponsah and the Rhythm at the Heart of West African Guitar A thesis submitted by Nathaniel C. Braddock in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music Tufts University August 2020 Adviser: Jeffrey Summit © 2020, Nathaniel C. Braddock Abstract The song “Yaa Amponsah” is held by Ghanaian musicians as the key to all highlife music. However, Amponsah occupies two spaces: that of a specific song with folkloric and historical origin stories, and that of a compositional form—or “Rhythm”—from which countless variations have evolved over the past century. This thesis seeks to define Amponsah as a style where certain characteristics are not always clear but are continually present and recognizable cross-nationally. Using musical analysis and ethnographic interviews with West African guitarists, I explore the movement of Amponsah across generations and national boundaries, drawing larger conclusions that have implications for understanding the transmission of cultural practice and embedded cultural memory carried within a specific musical expression. The Rhythm makes impactful appearances in the music of neighboring countries, becoming entwined with the Mami Wata myth, further complicating our understanding of ownership and origin, and bringing this song to the center of a debate regarding ownership of folkloric intellectual property and the relationship between developing nations and global capital. i Acknowledgements My journey has been supported by numerous people, and I wish now to salute their love, friendship, and guidance.
