Representing his school in the Metropolitan Tennis Finals in both 1945 & 1946 and winning both. Nev was also the school’s N opening batsman and a recognised slow bowler. In his last game for the school he scored 79 in the first innings, 76 in the second and took 6/29 with the ball. However, after being hit in the face and having his glasses broken, his cricket playing days came to an end. An early turning point in his tennis playing career came in 1945 when the Army which had occupied Milton during the war returned the area to QLTA. To re-open the tennis centre, the QLTA organised a series of exhibition matches between the leading Davis Cup players of the day, and Queensland’s top amateur and junior players – this included one Neville Langford. In 1950 Neville was employed by Slazenger’s as an ‘Inwards Clerk’ and at night he did promotional film shows for both tennis and his other passion, golf. Being the first to use the 16mm Bell Howell projector, he later used it to show such events as the 1953 Davis Cup at the Brisbane City Hall. In that same year he partnered Neale Fraser to win the Australian Hardcourt Doubles Championships against Mal Anderson and Roy Emerson. In the singles of the Championships he had a four set victory over Adrian Quist who at that time was the number one ranked player. By 1953 he was ranked the number one tennis player in Queensland. Throughout the 60’s and 70s he worked for Slazenger’s, improving his game and in 1980, he left Slazengers and bought the Northgate Tennis Centre. He started one of his great loves again coaching, at both the centre and also at St. Margaret’s, Nev continued his coaching at the centre which was sold in 1996 and at St Margaret’s until 1997.
