Joseph Gossman, the fourth bishop of the Raleigh Diocese, died August 12, 2013, at the age of 83, following a long illness. Bishop Gossman served as Bishop of Raleigh from May 19, 1975, until June 8, 2006, when Pope Benedict XVI accepted his retirement due to age. He was appointed Bishop of Ra- leigh at the age of 45 by Pope Paul VI on April 8, 1975, succeeding Bishop Vincent S. Waters, who died De- cember 1974. During his 31 years as shepherd of the Raleigh Diocese, Bishop Gossman faced the challenge of extensive growth of the Catholic population of the Diocese, which comprises the 54 eastern-most counties of North Carolina. At the time of his appointment, Catholics numbered approximately one percent of the statewide population. At the time of his retirement, the registered Catholic population in the Diocese of Raleigh was 192,000, with an additional 200,000 Hispanics residing in the Diocese, many of whom were Catholic. During his tenure, Bishop Gossman blessed and dedicated more than 60 parishes, schools and all-purpose buildings, most of them in his last 12 years. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, April 1, 1930, he was the son of Frank M. and Genevieve Steadman Gossman. He attended St. Charles College and St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1952. He continued studies at the North American College in Rome, obtaining his Licentiate in Sacred Theol- ogy from the Gregorian University, Rome, in 1956. Bishop Gossman was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore in Rome, December 17, 1955. In 1956, he began graduate studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., earning a doctor- ate in canon law in June 1959. He served as an assistant pastor at Baltimore's Basilica of the Assumption until July 1968, at which time he was appointed administrator of the Cathedral of Mary, Our Queen in Baltimore. He also served as vice- chancellor of the Archdiocese from 1959-1968. He was made Honorary Prelate to His Holiness Pope Paul VI with the title of Monsignor June 27, 1965. In July 1968, he was named Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore and was ordained a Bishop on September 11, 1968, by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan. In mid-1970, Bishop Gossman was named urban vicar, with the inner city of Baltimore and its people his special area of ministry. During his Episcopacy, Bishop Gossman was a strong proponent of the sanctity of human life, speaking out on issues involving human dignity, from the plight of the poor, to care and concern of the immigrant, to strong opposition to capital punishment. In 1997, he joined with Bishop Emeritus William Curlin of Charlotte in is- suing a Pastoral Letter titled “Of One Heart and One Mind.” The document, based on Catholic social teaching, called on public and business officials, the faithful and all people of good will to work on behalf of the com- mon good.

People all across the globe will start the season with Ash Wednesday Mass and try to come up with something they are giving up for 40 days. A year ago, I gave up sodas, no small feat for a guy who drinks Cherry Cokes like they’re water. This year, I’m pulling out the big gun. I’ve giving up … wait for it … hamburgers. Stop laughing. Seriously, pick yourself up off the ground and breathe. Giving up burgers is a big deal to a picky eater like myself. The way I see it, great burgers are an art form, taken for granted like a 1980s Hall and Oates song – always a reliable hit. As a reporter, I’m constantly on the run and getting a drive-thru burger is an easy fallback. As a regular guy, I look at a restaurant menu of what other people see as a display of delicious food and wonder what the hamburger tastes like. More often than not, someone says, “Like a burger.” And I respond, “Awesome. I’ll get that.” Sometimes I get an itch and just run out and a buy a burger. It’s really that bad. Of course, I like making burgers on the grill, too. It gives me that boost of feeling extra manly about my burger addiction. Lenten Fridays have always been tough for me.

That was one of several observations brought back to Denver by Archbishop J . Francis Stafford follow­ ing a five-day visit to the Vatican with a de legation of the National Council of Churches (NCC). The archbishop, in his role as chairman of the U.S. bishops' Committee on Ecumenical and Inter­ religious Affairs, accompanied the 10-member NCC delegation to the Vatican April 10-14. In a press conference upon his return April 17, Archbishop Stafford termed the visit of the NCC team "a very historic trip" in that it was only the second time an NCC delegation had officially visited the Holy See. Servicemen’s Memorial July 4, 1976, p. 55 Saint Adalbert's Parish got its start from the Martin A. Wagner Company which was located in Wagner's Point, Maryland. In 1907, the Board of Directors agreed that a church was necessary for the "continued growth of the town and to the continued usefulness of the factory. It would also invite new settlers to the town and make for greater contentment of the people living there". (Quoted from Mr. M. A. Wagner in minutes of Board of Directors.) A pledge of $5,000 was given by the Wagner family as a memorial to Mr. Wagner. Thus, St. Adalbert's had its beginning and became a mission of St. Athanasius Catholic Church in nearby Curtis Bay. The church was of Gothic revival architecture and named for a tenth century Bishop of Prague, a martyr especially venerated in Poland. The first Mass in the church was celebrated by Cardinal James Gibbons. As the church had financial needs at various times, the Wagner family, or the company, made generous contributions. It should be mentioned here that Mr. Wagner was a very religious man. Before St. Adalbert's Church was built, he had carriages in the streets to take the people in the community to Mass in the city. Father Charles Kotlarz was its first and only pastor, serving until his death in 1955. After his death, the parish was operated on a part time basis by Father Stephen F.
