The Detroit Tigers won the 1935 World Series, while the Detroit Lions became champs in the young National Football League. People went to the movies in droves, in these days before television. For a dime or two they could see Clark Gable in “Mutiny on the Bounty”, or Shirley Temple, the child star everyone loved, in movies like “The Littlest Rebel”. hen people went out, they dressed up. Women wore long skirts and men wore hats. Lucky children could dress in clothing endorsed by their Wfavorite stars. 1935 was the year that 20th Century and Fox studios merged to make Twentieth Century Fox. Improved electric lights made night baseball possible. And 1935 was the year that Parker Brothers, the nation’s leading game company, first made the MONOPOLY® game. Back then, a dollar went a long way. It had to. The average family earned $30.00 a week! You could buy new shoes, or a dress, or a fancy hat for $2.00. The games themselves, as well as the gaming subculture, offer players a number of personal and social benefits that continue to enrich their lives long after they leave the table. Using Goffman's theories of Dramaturgy and Frame Analysis, this paper seeks to examine the positive impact of gaming in three key areas. The first is an analysis of the subculture which includes the evolution of the games, the growth and diversification of the roleplaying community, and the current shift in stereotypes about gaming. -

Teahen, PhD, Director Community College Leadership Program ABSTRACT This dissertation documents the justification, creation, and refinement of a traditional board game to be used in first-year experience (freshman seminar) courses. The board game enRolled allows students to play college in a guided classroom environment. The game creates a low-stakes environment for students to be able to fail at college without risking time and money. Further, it is designed to give students a relatable topic to debate. By having a common experience, students can distance themselves from what their expectations of college are and deliberate on the tangible game they have played. The discussions that stem from this play and the modification of the game elements are designed to help the students take ownership over the experience. Having a game experience to discuss allows a student to objectively analyze their player’s path through the academic setting and debate realistic and perceived unrealistic challenges. Through these discussions, it is possible for students to engage with content while having little to no firsthand knowledge. It is the hope of this author that the creation of enRolled leads to a more engaging curriculum in first-year experience courses. -

Outline Ch. 36 – Fighting World War II/EQ: What military strategies did the United States and its allies pursue to defeat the Axis powers in World War II? 36.1 – Introduction After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States began mobilizing troops for war. Some of these soldiers would end up in Europe, fighting the German army. o First, though, they had to cross the Atlantic Ocean on troop ships, braving attacks by Germany’s deadly U-boat fleet. o Since the start of the war, in 1939, German U-boats had been working to disrupt and destroy Allied shipping in the Atlantic. When the United States entered the war, its Atlantic coastal waters were relatively unprotected. o During the first several months of 1942, U-boats sank dozens of American ships off the Atlantic Coast. o These losses would not continue, however. o As in World War I, the Allies reduced their losses by using the convoy system. By 1943, it was churning out enough ships to replace lost vessels and to defend against U-boat attacks. This new U.S. fleet would play a key role in naval battles and in supporting ground and air forces during World War II. 36.2. – Preparing for War in Europe In late December 1941, Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill met in Washington, D.C.
