Our Local Partners Although we sit on the doorstep of Canary Wharf we are focused on providing for our community and improving the chances for people to play sports. Tower Hamlets itself is unique in many ways. The borough is a highly urban, densely populated area just to the East of the City of London. The River Thames runs to the south with Hackney to the north and Newham to the east. Tower Hamlets is the traditional “East End” and there is a rich cultural heritage to the borough with many historically significant events taking place here and many iconic buildings located here. In terms of sport, there are very few open spaces with no schools having any grassed areas on them. Therefore the community club system is also patchy at best and so our centre is a major window for most children to access physical activity. The borough also has the highest percentage of residents under 16 out of any London borough and it has the highest number of children living in poverty anywhere in the UK. The levels of deprivation are so high that even though the borough boasts one of the world’s major financial centres in Canary Wharf, it is still the most socio-economically deprived area of the country. Tower Hamlets is also ranked in the top 5 UK boroughs for population density and council owned housing whilst it is in the bottom 5 for health, crime, drug abuse and car ownership. There is a very high diversity of culture and language in Tower Hamlets with pupils at our schools having origins in well over 100 different countries. Pupils speak well over 100 different home languages throughout our schools and very high numbers are at the early stages of learning English. There are a very high percentage of Muslim pupils – most with Bangladeshi origins. The vast majority of Bangladeshi residents are from the Sylhet region and over 2/3rds are under 18. The take up of PE and sport, particularly outside of school and in a traditional sense, is often negatively impacted by all of these issues and barriers Thankfully we attract some of the brightest and best young practitioners “Thanks for another great season. The who work hard, skilfully and innovatively to constantly overcome competition is really strong and enjoyable. I personally have a great obstacles and provide our children with opportunities on a par with and often better than pupils from more privileged backgrounds. time each week. I really enjoy the organised yet relaxed attitude that the While Tower Hamlets is our immediate area, the many public transport competition is run in” links that we have locally make us accessible for the entire Greater London area and indeed we have frequently held regional events of England Indoor Netball Association London wide competitions such as StreetChance T20 cricket and primary school competitions on behalf of Capital Kids Cricket. Contents Our Aims - 2012 We aim to support every person wishing to access sport. We aim to allow them to access as much sport and physical activity as possible and to provide the best possible chance of their continuing participation at our centre and beyond. As we have established a unique product in our community, the opportunity we provide to people is also unique, and are therefore are creating a new benchmark for the provision of sports in our environment. Although our focus has slowly changed from commercial to community, the qualitative feedback and guidance we receive from our partners, local community and customers influences our priorities and positioning as an organisation to a much greater degree. ’it is fantastic to see a sports and leisure Sport provides an opportunity for people to grow, develop and gain facility buzzing with activity and being able confidence. It helps people to work as a team, provides leadership to offer such a wide range of sports at all skills, team working and communication skills. It also teaches people levels, and for anyone of all ages.

The upgrade will cement Parkville as the home for netball and hockey in Australia with six new indoor netball courts replacing the existing outdoor courts, a new indoor hockey facility, a high-performance strength and conditioning gym and a home for Netball Victoria and Hockey Victoria.
