Still very young, he was forced to leave Georgia (to avoid the Bolshevik regime) and found refuge in Europe. While abroad, Grigol Peradze began an active scientific research, he searched everywhere and collected Georgian manuscripts a nd studied them. After a divine vision, he gave up secular life and became a monk. Unfortunately, the totalitarian regime did not allow him to live in peace even in Europe. When Nazi Germany occupied Poland, he was there. Grigol Peradze as a foreigner coul d leave the country, but he did not. He did not cooperate with the Nazis and tried to protect Jews from Nazi repressions. Therefore, he was soon confined in a concentration camp and ended his life in a gas chamber. According to the statement, St. Grigol Pe radze entered the cell instead of one Jew who had many children in order to save human life and not to bow to evil. In 2019 the Georgian society celebrated the 120th anniversary of this great Georgian figure.

THE ORTHODOX CHURCH OF GEORGIA AND THE ECUMENICAL MOVEMENT (BEFORE AND AFTER 1997)1 David TiniKaShvili (Ilia State University, Institute of Oriental Studies) Introduction Although there are quite a few parallels in development of the Orthodox Church of Georgia (OCG) with other post-Soviet countries after 1991, the OCG is the only one among the Orthodox churches to have completely unexpectedly abandoned the Ecumenical Movement.2 This raises the ques- tion about possible peculiarities of the post-Soviet history of the OCG. It is true that, like the other post-communist countries after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Georgia had to undergo the same national and religious ­processes of self-realization, but only the OCG cut off completely its former ties with the Ecumenical Movement. Who or what fostered this? How did it become possible for such a decision to be made and where did the inspi- ration originate: from higher up (the hierarchy) or from lower down (the people)? To date, there has been no publication devoted to systematically examining this issue. The word ‘ecumenism’ is derived from the Greek word oikoumene, mean- ing ‘populated land’. For Christians this meant the entire Christian world. This is why the Church Councils are remembered as being ecumenical for example. A movement calling itself ecumenical originated in the begin- ning of the 20th century in the Protestant West.     Besik Khurtsilava Doctor of Social Sciences Address: 8 Shoshitaishvili str., 0179, Tbilisi, Georgia E-mail: [email protected] “Mr. Siksek” from the Palestinian diary of St. Grigol Peradze and his unknown Georgian ancestor In 1936 when St. Grigol Peradze was in Jerusalem he met a resident of Jeru- salem – someone “Mr. Siksek”. He turned out to be a George Siksek, a well- known person in the Christian community of Palestine who held various positions in the period of the British Mandate. The paper explores the oral tradition of the Siksek family. According to the narrative the ancestor of the Sikseks was Simon, an envoy and a secretary sent by the Georgian king to Jerusalem to help the Cross Monastery in the 14th century. The Cross Monastery Agapes No. 84/81, 65/63, 206/203 dating back to the 14th centu- ry mention Svimon Elmelikisdze. In two cases he is mentioned as the abbot of the Cross Monastery and in one case as a secular assistant of the abbot. Based on the chronology and other crucial details the author of this paper concludes that Simon, the ancestor of the Sikseks is the same person as Svimon Elmelikisdze mentioned in the Cross Monastery Agapes. The author believes that the Sikseks’ narrative is true and verifies it with the data of historic sources. Konferencja została zorganizowana przez Studium Europy Wschodniej UW i Instytut Pamięci Narodowej w ramach cyklicznych spotkań Polsko- Gruzińskiej Komisji Historyków oraz corocznych konferencji kaukazologicznych im. św. Grzegorza Peradze. W trakcie konferencji prezentowana była wystawa Instytutu Pamięci Narodowej poświęcona gruzińskim oficerom kontraktowym w Wojsku Polskim w latach 1918–1945 (przygotowana przez dr. Dawida Kolbaię). Odnalezione w archiwach zdjęcia i dokumenty opisujące stosunki Polaków i Gruzinów, opatrzone wyczerpującymi opisami, prezentują mało znaną historię współpracy obydwu narodów w burzliwym okresie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego oraz II wojny światowej. We should also mention the book of Steffi Chotiwari-Juenger „Die Literaturen der Völker Kaukasiens (Neue Erzählungen und deutschsprachige Bibliographie)“ and “Georgian literature in European Science”, edited by Elgudja Khintibidze. Introduction According to words of Georgian kartvelologist Hainz Faehnrich, “Georgian literature belongs to the number of the greatest, richest and well-developed literatures…It deserves of standing side by side with French, Greek or German literatures”. Georgian literature has never been closed in itself, in geographic, ethnographic or political borders of the country. It always had concrete or historical-typological, simple or complicated creative contacts with the literatures of other nations. Georgian literature had relations with German literature as well. Georgian masters of belles- lettres borrowed progressive ideas and artistic images from German literature, worked out similar subjects, translated texts, which corresponded to their working principles and aspirations to a certain extent. At the same time, Georgian theme, Georgian historical material, images or realities were expressed in German texts to some extent as well. To prove it, it is enough to name the greatest poet and playwright of baroque Andreas Gryphius, working in the seventeen century, who wrote the tragedy “Katharina von Georgien” (“Catherine the Georgian”) in 1647, in which one episode of Georgian people’s century-old struggle against Iran is described, when Georgian queen Ketevan (the same Catherine) was tortured in Persia.
