These esimates given below. We tracked down the documentation from ARB, which is included (see the ARBDoc tab). Because the Moyer project is the replacement of a gasoline with an electric (zero emission) lawnmower the emission reductions are also the emissions from the equipment. Daily emissions for commerical lawn mowers were estimated based on the difference in use between residential and commerical gasoline mowers. Here are the data for the two types and other equipment types. Equipment hp, hours/yr, and load data were given in the table above. The average difference in rates was generated by calculating average four stroke and two stroke certified emission rates for small spark ignited equipment under EPA's emission certification program and database for model year 2013 engines. On average the certified rate for two stroke engines is eight (8) times that of 4 stroke engines. This source of ROCs was not included in ARB lawnmower emission data given above or in ARB's offroad model. Spillage emissions were estimated using an EPA/ARB method: EF = 17 grams/tank capacity in gallons. “Refueling Emissions for Nonroad Engine Modeling” (NR-013a), EPA. So to calculate spillage we need an estimate of tank capacity, which was obtained by a Google search of common equipment in each equipment type, and gallons of fuel consumed each year by each type. These are the jobs that usually go to the low man on the totem pole, the rookie you don’t yet trust with your brand-new zero-turn mower. That makes some sense, but it doesn’t mean that you don’t need to train employees on how you want lawns trimmed and edged. As with any other aspect of lawn maintenance, a high-quality finished product depends on doing the job the right way. “You absolutely have to train employees when it comes to trimming and edging. Not just anyone can go out there and do it,” says John Shackleford, owner of Shackleford Lawn and Landscape, outside of Indianapolis, Ind. “They think they know what they’re doing, but the next thing you know they’re getting too far into the ground and end up killing the grass around landscape features or trees in the yard.” Going too low and not staying even with the turf is the number one problem Shackleford sees, adding that it’s an ongoing process for him to train his employees on proper procedures. “We walk new employees through the process for the first two or three yards when they start. Then we give them a trimmer, but still walk with them to make sure that they are doing it correctly before letting them go out on their own,” he explains. Edging requires a similar hands-on training approach, Shackleford advises. His crews use STIHL gas-powered edgers with blades along the edges where lawn meets hardscaping.
