Past concerns and present issues Andreas Mahler, Freie Universität Berlin The Shakespearean œuvre is full of words like ‘remedy’, ‘remediate’, ‘restore’, or ‘restitute’ that imply the overcoming of a crisis by ‘healingly’ coming back to the old order of before. This is based on the fantasy that, if only one waits long enough, the wheel of fortune will always ‘come full circle’. Quite a substantial number of important plays, however, demonstrate that this is not the case. This can be seen as a crisis of cyclical temporality, giving way to the idea of linearity that up until now seems to have won the day. The contribution first addresses the fantasm of restitution in Shakespeare and discusses its negotiation and questioning in some of his plays.

  • The Tragedy of King Richard Iii by William Shakespeare
THE TRAGEDY OF KING RICHARD III BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE EDUCATION PACK 1 RICHARD III EUROPEAN THEATRE ETG EDUCATION PACK GROUP 2013 Welcome to the Education Pack provided by Cambridge University’s European Theatre Group to accompany our 2013 winter tour of Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of King Richard III. ETG has developed a reputation at home and abroad for producing exciting, innovative, experimental and professional interpretations of classic texts. However, an integral part of our tour is the educational enrichment which we hope to provide. We aim to create a production which will successfully engage with our audiences, whether they are school children, university students or academics. This Education Pack is designed to be a supplement to the study and revision materials you can easily find elsewhere – on the internet, in core study guides, and in general introductions to the text. Information on the best of these sources can be found in the further reading section. This pack instead aims to help you think critically about the text in relation to its performance, and the key ideas that have shaped our production. Richard III is unique within Shakespeare’s History plays, in that almost every other character is eclipsed by the dominant force of Richard – he is both director and actor, politician and fool, hero and devil. Indeed, with over 30 historical figures crammed in the full play (many of whom only ever appear at the peripheries) we have chosen to focus our study and our production on Richard and the three key women who represent the only resistance to his rise - Margaret, Elizabeth and Anne.

SHAKESPEARE ‘This is a hugely impressive, far-reaching, lucidly written book. THE MAGAZINE FOR DULWICH COLLEGE ALUMNI FEATURING LAURIE DAVIDSON From Dulwich to Hollywood his days at the College and recent appearance in Cats PLUS EKOW QUARTEY AT THE GLOBE AND BEN CHALLACOMBE ‘SAVES’ STEPHEN FRY THE MAGAZINE FOR DULWICH COLLEGE ALUMNI Front cover image credit: Phil Sharp PAGE 03 Welcome to the first issue of OA, our new look magazine. For regular readers of the Alleyn Club Yearbook should seem less of a revolution and more of an evolution. OA will continue to reflect on the life of the school and provide news of the ever growing network of OAs both in the UK and overseas, while at the same time developing on, and supporting a lively and engaging communications strategy driven by the website, e-bulletins and of course OA Connect. In particular, I hope that OA will allow us to look in greater depth at the lives and careers of OAs across a wide range of careers and interests. In this issue we turn the spotlight onto Laurie Davidson and Ekow Quartey who have both followed in the footsteps of the College's founder Edward Alleyn to become successful actors on both stage and screen. Laurie traces his journey into acting from his time here and talks about the very varied range of roles he has played (including his recent appearance in the musical fantasy film Cats), while Ekow talks about a career that has played out largely on the stage, including roles at the National Theatre and the Globe. They speak highly of their College days and it is clear that they both have the talent and drive to fulfil their considerable potential.
