St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Cudahy, Wisconsin November 8, 2020

Almost every week in worship we confess: “He will come again to judge the living and the dead.” But we often live as though it will never happen. We pray that God keeps us awake and alert and prepared for his return, or our own death – whichever comes first. With faith in , the Lamb of God who washes us clean, there’s no reason to be afraid of Judgment Day. We look forward to our Savior’s return, when he takes us home!

CALL TO WORSHIP M: We have gathered to worship the one true God. He identifies himself in his Word as the Triune God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

HYMN OF INVITATION – “Delay Not! Delay Not!” (337 v.1-3)

CONFESSION OF SINS M: Lord, we acknowledge that our presence in your house is a privilege given to us purely by your grace. You are holy and we are not. We, therefore, humbly come before you to confess our sinfulness and ask for your unfailing mercy. M: Lord, we were born with sin. We inherited it from our parents. C: Jesus, forgive me. M: Lord, we think, say and do things that are wrong because our nature is evil. C: Jesus, forgive me. M: Lord, we fail to do the good you want us to do because our nature is selfish. C: Jesus, forgive me. M: Lord, we are sorry that we have sinned against you and against each another. C: Jesus, forgive me.

HYMN OF INVITATION – “Delay Not! Delay Not!” (337 v.4) 4) Delay not! Delay not! The hour is at hand; The earth will dissolve, and the will fade. The dead, small and great, in the Judgment must stand— What pow’r, then, O sinner, can lend you its aid?

GOD FORGIVES AND FORGETS OUR SINS M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In his great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. He says in his Word, “I forgive your wickedness and I will remember your sins no more!” The blood of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, washes you clean of your sins. You are forgiven and have a home waiting for you with Jesus in glory. You can look forward to Judgment Day with confidence and comfort, because you are at peace with God. Amen.

HYMN OF INVITATION – “Delay Not! Delay Not!” (337 v.5) 5) Delay not! Delay not! Why longer abuse The love and compassion of Jesus, your God? A fountain is opened—how can you refuse? Come, wash and be cleansed in his pardoning blood.

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lord God Almighty, rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that we may always look forward to the end of this present evil age and to the day of your return in judgment. Keep us steadfast in a true and living faith, and present us at last holy and blameless before you; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT – Daniel 7:9-10 Just like the Apostle John in today’s epistle lesson, Daniel also has a vision. His is filled with fire and thrones and books. God the Father opens the books and will judge according to what is in them. One set of books records deeds, another book only has believer’s names written in it. 9 “As I looked, “thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze. 10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from before him. Thousands upon thousands attended him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

EPISTLE / TODAY’S MESSAGE – Revelation 7:9-17 There’s a great big group of people in white robes. Who are they? 9 After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” 11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures. They fell down on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying: “Amen! Praise and glory and wisdom and thanks and honor and power and strength be to our God for ever and ever. Amen!” 13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes - who are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “they are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”

M: Alleluia! Watch therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. Alleluia!

GOSPEL M: The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 25.

C:

Jesus once came as a humble baby, but he’ll return as the glorious King with angels at his side. He’ll sit on his throne and will judge everyone as either a sheep (believer), or a goat (unbeliever).

31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 4

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C:

CONFESSION OF FAITH: The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into . The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The End Time Season Planning My Christian Victory Celebration

When will Jesus come again?

What is going to happen when Jesus does return? What is heaven like? How can a person be sure they’ll end up in heaven?

Saints Triumphant, Nov. 15 “You can no longer die, for you are a

child of the resurrection.” Pick up a “Victory Celebration” sheet on the entryway (Luke 20:36) desk. What more powerful testimony can you give to your Christian faith, than to plan out your own “Victory Celebration”? Your funeral is your final confession of faith. Families don’t have to worry about picking Scripture readings and when their loved one has already chosen them.

Fill out the information on the sheet and return it to

church. We’ll make a copy of it, so both the family and the church have a copy. Christ the King, Nov. 22

The other information you provide helps Pastor “King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Revelation 19:16) Marshall put together a “Christian” obituary in the funeral bulletin.

Thanksgiving While the last 8 months have been extremely challenging, there are still reasons to be thankful. Let’s count those ways in worship.

Therefore, masks are required for in-person worship in accordance with the state-wide policy. If we see someone not wearing a mask in church, assume they have a condition or circumstance that makes wearing a mask difficult or dangerous. While some have concerns about this mandate,

it is an opportunity for us to express Christian love to our community and those at risk.

Bartelt and Scott Koeske The effect of the Lutheran Reformation of the Church on the history for the complimentary of the world can’t be overstated. US News and World Report ranked the calendars on the entryway most important events of the last 1000 years. The Lutheran Reformation table. placed second, right behind Gutenberg’s printing press. Historians consider the Lutheran Reformation to be of greater significance than the discovery of the New World (no.3). Luther was a monk, a priest and a prof at a little university in Wittenberg, Germany, but he’s considered the third most influential person of the last 1000 years. God used his witness and his faithfulness to the Word to change the world.
