The Roche School Reading List Year 5 As part of your child’s literary education, we recommend that by the end of Year 5 they are familiar with the following books. Katy loves doing dangerous stuff such as: skateboarding, tree climbing and swinging as high as she can on the rope swing. One day a terrible accident happens, and this story is about her life. I think my friends would like this story because it's about a girl who is the same age as us about to start high school like we will be doing. She also goes through struggles like some 11 year olds would. I think Katy is a great book and would recommend it to my friends because it shows some struggles we will have to overcome during secondary school. It also shows you don't always have to have just one friend because soon Katy learns that she can have more friends than just Cecy Hall. I love this book! Bethany Wingate The Spy Who Loved School Dinners by Pamela Butchart When new girl Mathilde starts at school, Izzy and her friend soon realise something is not quite right. They tried to warn her about school dinners (aka poison) but she really loves them, and even has seconds. This is when they realise that Mathilde is a spy who has come to find out their secrets. They must stop her before it’s too late! This book is very exciting because it is full of adventure and surprise. I’ve tried to pick a favourite bit but I can’t because I loved all of it.

What Katy Didn’t Do The complex issues presented by the rewriting of ‘classic’ children’s books Caroline Quillen 1 Introduction In Children’s Book’s in England: Five Centuries of Social Life, Harvey Darton attempts to summarise the history of children’s literature as it arose in England. He describes a shift in this field occurring over the course of the nineteenth century. At the beginning of this period, there were still moral tales being written – that is to say, stories that focused exclusively on the moral education, rather than entertainment, of their readers – but there was much else too, and this phenomenon continued to develop over the course of the century. Even though children’s texts that focused solely on providing a moral framework for their audience fell out of fashion in the way Darton outlines, the idea that children’s books should give their readers some manner of moral message is one that is still pervasive, even today. In An Introduction to Children’s Literature, Peter Hunt describes children’s authors as being in “a position of singular responsibility in transmitting cultural values, rather than ‘simply’ telling a story.” (Hunt, 3) As such, children’s books published in earlier eras receive perhaps more scrutiny than contemporaneous works written for adults, and it might be this that has contributed to several children’s books having been written more recently. However, it seems significant to note that the cultural values which the rewriting author infers from the original may not be those the original author intended to transmit. Indeed, it can be the case that the modern author can misinterpret the statement the older author was trying to make.
