H.R.ANo.A1434 RESOLUTION 1 WHEREAS, Benard Ighner of Houston, composer of the timeless 2 classic "Everything Must Change," passed away on August 14, 2017, 3 at the age of 72; and 4 WHEREAS, The son of Erma and Booker T.AIghner, Benard Ighner 5 was born in the Bayou City on January 18, 1945, and grew up with four 6 siblings, Jo Carole, Sondra, Anita, and Keith; although he had no 7 formal training, he demonstrated musical talent at an early age and 8 learned how to play piano, guitar, bass, and drums, as well as a 9 number of wind instruments; he graduated from Yates High School and 10 moved to San Diego, California, with his family before enlisting in 11 the U.S.AArmy; and 12 WHEREAS, After serving his country in Germany, Mr.AIghner 13 returned to California and met Dizzy Gillespie at the home of his 14 older sister; the jazz legend was so impressed by his rich baritone 15 voice that he invited him to tour and record with his band; 16 subsequently, he introduced Mr.AIghner to composer Lalo Schifrin, 17 who featured him on the album Rock Requiem, and they cowrote "Like 18 Me," featured on the Dirty Harry soundtrack; later, they teamed for 19 an orchestral performance and album with Sarah Vaughan; and 20 WHEREAS, Quincy Jones received a demo of Mr.AIghner 's 21 composition "Everything Must Change" and asked him to sing it on his 22 1974 album Body Heat; the LP soared to the top of the charts, and the 23 haunting melody became a standard, covered by everyone from 24 vocalists Nina Simone, Randy Crawford, and Barbra Streisand to jazz 1 H.R.ANo.A1434 -

JICLT Journal of International Commercial Law and Technology Vol. 7, Issue 1 (2012) “The sleeping lion needed protection” – lessons from the Mbube ∗∗∗ (Lion King) debacle Matome Melford Ratiba Senior Lecturer, College of Law University of South Africa (UNISA) [email protected] Abstract : In 1939 a young musician from the Zulu cultural group in South Africa, penned down what came to be the most popular albeit controversial and internationally acclaimed song of the times. Popular because the song somehow found its way into international households via the renowned Disney‘s Lion King. Controversial because the popularity passage of the song was tainted with illicit and grossly unfair dealings tantamount to theft and dishonest misappropriation of traditional intellectual property, giving rise to a lawsuit that ultimately culminated in the out of court settlement of the case. The lessons to be gained by the world and emanating from this dramatics, all pointed out to the dire need for a reconsideration of measures to be urgently put in place for the safeguarding of cultural intellectual relic such as music and dance. 1. Introduction Music has been and, and continues to be, important to all people around the world. Music is part of a group's cultural identity; it reflects their past and separates them from surrounding people. Music is rooted in the culture of a society in the same ways that food, dress and language are”. Looked at from this perspective, music therefore constitute an integral part of cultural property that inarguably requires concerted and decisive efforts towards preservation and protection of same from unjust exploitation and prevalent illicit transfer of same. -

This is what has made Nils Landgren one of the most creative, many-sided and also most successful artists to be currently found in the European jazz scene. Since 1994 he has been under contract to the ACT Label from Munich, releasing over this period 12 albums in his own name. Seven have received the golden German Jazz Award, with two even going platinum! Meanwhile, his role as producer of Swedish singers Rigmor Gustafsson and Viktoria Tolstoy has brought him two further gold awards. With "Mr Redhorn" Nils Landgren, who "for a long time has been at the forefront of European jazz trombonists" (Spiegel), you don't only associate the frenetic celebrated concerts of his groovy Funk Unit, which has been ceaselessly on the road for the past year with the successful project FUNKY ABBA (ACT 9430-2). You also know him from his intimate duos with Esbjörn Svensson where they would rework Swedish folk songs, from his chamber concerts of religious music or from his collaborations with big bands. One first came across Nils Landgren as the sensitive interpreter of ballads on his 1999 album Ballads (ACT 9269-2) from which can be appreciated his gentle and touching voice and "hypnotic charm" (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Following this he released his platinum disc Sentimental Journey (ACT 9409-2) and produced the exceptionally successful album I Will Wait For You (ACT 9418-2) by Rigmor Gustafsson. -

Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956).
