But they also help the leaders who sacrificed their own people get away with it.     The history of this veterans’ recognition program began with an idea from a local Vietnam veteran activist and a dance instructor. Ted Sampley and Mary Beth Dawson wanted a way to pay tribute to the many veterans that have given so much in the continued fight for world peace and freedom. The first Salute “show” was performed in November 2000 at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC to a multitude of veterans and visitors to our nation’s capital. Positive comments after the show prompted Mr. Sampley and Mrs. Dawson to bring the performance back to their hometown of Kinston, North Carolina. In 2001, a committee of Kinston businesses and individuals headed by the Pride of Kinston began planning the veteran celebration. Former US Air Force Sergeant Adrian Cronauer, the deejay better known for “Gooooood Morning, Vietnam” was the emcee during the Tribute Show and kept things lively. Members from the elite group of Tuskeegee Airmen were in attendance during the festivities. One of Kinston’s most distinguished sons, Eugene ‘Red’ McDaniel, was the special speaker at the Memorial Service where all of Lenoir County’s Killed in Action were remembered. Items from the North Carolina boxcar of the French Gratitude Train were on display at the Community Council for the Arts. Purple Heart recipients were recognized during the entire event for their bravery and courage under fire the following year. Artifacts from Michael Blassie’s tomb, more commonly known as the ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’ were on display at the Community Council for the Arts. The Culture Heritage Museum offered a glimpse of black military history during its open house.

Beginning in 1977, he and his wife became war tax resisters, withholding federal income tax to protest U.S. military expenditures, donating it instead to charity. As a consequence, their home was seized by the IRS in 1989, setting up a protracted legal struggle that resulted in Kehler's arrest and imprisonment and the sale of the house. They remain tax resisters. The Kehler Papers document the five year struggle (1989-1994) against the seizure and sale of the Kehlers' home by the IRS. The collection includes meeting minutes, notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings; letters to the editor, essays, articles, plans and strategy documents for the vigil set outside the Kehler home; support committee information and actions; correspondence with government officials, the IRS, and the Justice Department; letters of support; documents from the legal proceedings; and political literature addressing the Kehlers' situation.

His aloofness for political hoopla set the tone of his coverage of the 1996 presidential race in the New Republic. He waxed diffident about candidate Lamar Alexander's nervous tics, Bob Dole's vanity and his fellow journalists' eagerness to catch Pat Buchanan on tape. When an unfortunate aide for Phil Gramm roused him one morning at 7 for a chance to press flesh with the candidate, Lewis rolled over and went back to sleep, delighted to illustrate his casual disdain for and imperviousness to the charms of politicians. Then he met John McCain; he fell hard. Upon first encountering McCain, Lewis stopped to register his awe. "I am amazed that any reporter in this situation can bring himself to ask a difficult question," Lewis gushed in print. "Certainly I cannot." That was the start of something big, and Lewis' ramblings seem now to have sparked similar reverence for Arizona's senior senator among others in the national press corps. But absent from their coverage has been the McCain familiar to his Arizona constituents as something of a crank and a scalawag, to be kind.     POST-TRUTH POLITICS: DISINFORMATION THROUGH ALTERNATIVE INFORMATION STREAMS by Jillian Donovan A thesis submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Baltimore, Maryland December 2019 © 2019 Jillian Donovan All Rights Reserved Abstract The Information Age has brought numerous consequences and quickly launched us into a Post Truth era. In this new era, disinformation spreads farther than ever in mere seconds. This thesis looks into the issue of disinformation in the Post Truth era by looking at three alternative information streams that are often used to spread disinformation and how they affect the American political process. These alternative information streams affect public opinion, elections, and policy agendas by targeting people through emotions and entertainment. This thesis looks into the effects of soft news, memes, and conspiracy theories by analyzing six scenarios. These scenarios include Jimmy Kimmel’s plea for the Affordable Care Act in 2017, John Oliver’s plea for net neutrality in 2014, the Occupy movement, the alt-right movement, Russian disinformation in the 2016 election cycle, and the birtherism conspiracy. Public polling, Congressional and Presidential responses, research papers, and news articles will be used to analyze the effects of these scenarios. This research found that disinformation is often more effective at affecting American political attitudes than facts because it is more emotional and entertaining. This research shows that alternative information streams are important and potentially dangerous channels of information sharing. Due to the speed by which disinformation can travel on the internet, an American and worldwide approach to internet regulation will be necessary going forward in the 21st century to combat disinformation.
