Acrosstheglobe,thehumaneproblemsofalargelyunregulated dogracingindustryhavenowbeenexposed,andgovernmentsare respondingwithaffirmativeaction,includingoutrightprohibitions. IntheUnitedStatestheactivityisnowillegalinthirty-nineoffiftystates. CountriessuchasSouthAfricaandJamaicahaverefusedtolegalise itinthefirstplace.ItisourhopethatParliamentwillstudythisactivity inthecontextofitsworldwidedecline. AlthoughofficialcritiquesofgreyhoundracingintheUKhavebeen issuedinthepast,itappearsthatlittletonothinghasactuallychanged withintheindustry.Greyhoundscontinuetosufferneedlesslywhile concernsovertheirwelfareremainlargelyignored. Ourjointreportalsostandsapartfrompastresearchasitcontainsmore recentdataandusesdatanotpreviouslyanalysed,suchasdisciplinary rulingsandtheuseofgreyhoundsbypublicuniversities. Thisisalsothefirstcomprehensivereportongreyhoundracinginthe UnitedKingdomfromahumaneperspective. Researchforthisreportwasconductedoveratwenty-monthperiod, fromOctober2012untilMay2014.Informationwascollectedthrough multipleavenues,includingareviewofexistingreportsongreyhound racing,publicinformationrequestssubmittedtogovernmentagencies anduniversities,industrywebsitesandnewsstories. InjurydataisnotpubliclyavailablefromtheGreyhoundBoardof GreatBritain,soinformationwasinsteadcollectedfromthewebsites andblogsofUKgreyhoundtrainers,aswellasonindustryforums, websites,andinanindustrynewspaper. Atotalof24ofthesesiteswerelocatedandsearched,goingback to2006,tofindreferencestoracinggreyhoundinjuries.Finally, stakeholderswerecontactedandaskediftheycouldprovideany usefuldataforthereport. Or have earned one of the following PCA certificates: PCA Working Certificate, Working Certificate Excellent, Upland Instinct Certificate, Upland Working Certificate, Upland Working Certificate Excellent (also includes Hunting Poodle and Hunting Poodle Excellent titles). Spayed and neutered dogs and bitches are eligible to participate and will be judged together with intact dogs and bitches. Honorable scars and injuries are to be expected with working dogs and are to be judged accordingly. Any trim is acceptable other than fancy grooming competition type trims. No attachments to the hair are allowed other than rubber bands as permitted in the Poodle breed standard.     Schutzhund and IPO Jim Engel From: The Police Dog: History, Breeds and Service, Chapter 6 In America, Schutzhund was the big new thing in the latter 1970s, an exciting alternative to the dreary obedience programs of the era, where passive compliance was the preordained role of the dog. This was a venue where the protection dogs were called upon to fulfill their age-old heritage, to protect, to engage human adversaries in simulated attack scenarios. The dogs, the good ones, came alive, and their handlers were right there behind them. Most Americans, including the dog people, had never heard of strange things such as ring sports, bite suits or breeds with funny sounding names such as "Malinois." Schutzhund specifically evolved as a German national sport under the VDH, that is, the German national organization comparable in scope to the AKC.
