NASA space scientist and mathematician Katherine Johnson, pictured here inwas known as a human computer because of her precise mathematics calculations. Johnson was awarded the National Geographic Society Hubbard Medal on Thursday, October 8, for her outstanding contributions to science and exploration. She calculated flight trajectories, by hand, for the United States space program. For her contributions to space exploration, Katherine Johnson, who died in February at the age ofwas The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 as the recipient of the National Geographic Society Hubbard Medal, awarded for achievement in research, discovery, and exploration. Inthe Apollo astronauts were awarded the same prize. Now, the excellent work that made the mission possible is being celebrated. Katherine's legacy of exploration, innovation and inspiration lives on, and we are in awe of her remarkable achievements. Gupta says Johnson is her hero. Historic pictures show the hidden women of the space race. Her exceptional work as a mathematician guided the mission on which Alan B. Shepherd became the first American in space. A year later, her calculating skills helped John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the Earth. Johnson has been called a math genius. She entered high school when she was 10 and graduated four years later. She then entered West Virginia State College, a historically Black College The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 University, and finished her undergraduate degree by the age of Johnson was fortunate to have had access to schools and education beyond the reach of most African Americans at the time. In her hometown of White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia, Black students in the segregated education system could go no further than sixth grade. Katherine Johnson, pictured here inwas a member of a NASA advisory committee on affirmative action. Johnson worked with her colleagues to help the agency meet its goals. Moore had a year career as math teacher and counselor. Both are now retired. A third daughter, Constance Goble Garcia, died in What she had that I think got her through was, she was fearless. Hylick remembers her mother telling her and her sisters to do what you have to do to get the job done. You know, you don't have to make too much noise, just do what you have to do. They knew her reputation, but there probably was no more respect than that because when the day was over, they went into their white The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4. On the following mission, in October, Koch and crewmate Jessica Meir made the first all-female space walk. But what I see as similarities is that we were both motivated by a true love for what we saw as our calling. Meet history's most brilliant female coders. Morgan Wellons, 12, from Atlanta, Georgia, sees Johnson as inspirational. She and sisters Madison, 10, and Monroe, 7, dressed up as the women featured in the Hidden Figures movie. Madison Wellons says Johnson gives her the confidence that she too can achieve anything. When asked about what the Hubbard Medal means to the Johnson family, daughters Moore and Hylick say their mother would have been gratified to be recognized with such a prestigious award. Many of these people had lived around Green Bay [1] before migrating to the Milwaukee area around the time of European immigration. French missionaries and traders first passed through the area in the late 17th and 18th centuries. French explorer Robert La Salle was most likely the first white man to visit Milwaukee in October The Natives at Milwaukee tried to control their destiny by participating in all the major wars on the American continent. As the 18th century came to a close, the first recorded white fur trader settled in Milwaukee. Mirandeau remained all year with Vieau coming every spring with supplies. In or Mirandeau died and was the first white to be buried in the city in an Indian cemetery near Broadway and Wisconsin. Vieau married the granddaughter of an Indian chief and had at least twelve children. Vieau's daughter by another woman, Josette, would later marry Solomon Juneau. These links established a Metis population, and by Milwaukee was essentially a Metis settlement. Solomon Juneau, the first of the three to come to the area, arrived in The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 The French Canadian Juneau married Josette Vieau, daughter of Jacques Vieauinand Vieau eventually sold the trading post to his son-in-law and daughter, the "founding mother of Milwaukee. This town soon attracted settlers from the Eastern United States and Europe. Soon after, Byron Kilbourn settled on the west side of the Milwaukee River. In competition with Juneau, Kilbourn established Kilbourntown there, making sure that the streets running toward the river did not match up with those on the east side. This accounts for the large number of angled bridges that still exist in Milwaukee today. Further, Kilbourn distributed maps of the area that showed only Kilbourntown, implying that Juneautown did not exist or that the east side of the river was uninhabited and thus undesirable. The third prominent builder, George H. Walker, claimed land to the south of the Milwaukee River, where he built a log house in This area grew and became known as Walker's Point. The proximity of the towns sparked tensions in after the completion of a bridge built between Kilbourntown and Juneautown. Kilbourn and his supporters viewed the bridge as a threat to their community and ultimately led to Kilbourn destroying part of the bridge. Over the next few weeks, skirmishes broke out between the inhabitants of the two towns; while no one was killed, several people were seriously injured. After this event, known as the Milwaukee Bridge Warthe two towns made greater attempts at cooperation. By the s, the three towns had grown to such an extent that on January 31, they combined to incorporate as the City of Milwaukee and elected Solomon Juneau as the city's first mayor. A great number of German immigrants had helped increase the city's population during the s and continued to migrate to the area during the following decades. Milwaukee became known as the "Deutsches Athen" German Athensand into the 20th century, there were more German speakers and German- language The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 than there were English speakers The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 English-language newspapers in the city. In the midth century Milwaukee earned the nickname " Cream City ," which refers to the large number of cream colored bricks that came out of the Menomonee River Valley and were used in construction. At its peak, Milwaukee produced 15 million bricks a year, with a third going out of the state. During the middle and The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 19th century, Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area became the final destination of many German immigrants fleeing the Revolution of In Wisconsin they found the inexpensive land and the freedoms they sought. The German heritage and influence in the Milwaukee area is widespread. The Milwaukee Bar Association was founded in It is the fourth oldest of such organizations in the United States and now has over 2, members. On May 5, the Bay View Massacre occurred, in which striking steelworkers who were marching toward a mill in the Bay View section of Milwaukee were intercepted by a squad of National Guardsmen who, under orders from the Wisconsin Governor, fired point blank into the strikers, killing seven. In MarchMilwaukee had four days of protest and one day of rioting against its Chinese laundrymen. Sparking this citywide disturbance were allegations of sexual misconduct between two Chinese and several underaged white females. The unease and The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4 in the wake of the riot was assuaged by the direct disciplining of the city's Chinese. The late 19th century saw the incorporation of Milwaukee's first suburbs. Bay View existed as an independent village from — The early 20th century saw the additions of West Allis and West Milwaukeewhich completed the first generation of so-called "inner-ring" The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4. In general, suburbs along the north shore of Lake Michigan were residential and wealthier and suburbs along the south shore were industrial and working class. The western suburbs were mixed—North Milwaukee and West Allis being primarily industrial, and Wauwatosa being primarily The First American: Walkers on the Wall Vol 4.
