Many studies have been conducted on the subject of Christian symbolism in the major Grail romances. However, the aim of the present paper is to prove that the 15th-century “Tale of the Sangrail”, found in Le Morte d’Arthur, by Thomas Malory, presents a greater degree of Christian coloration than 12th-century Chrétien de Troyes’ Perceval and Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Parzival. In order to evaluate this claim, the origin and function of the main elements at the Grail Ceremony were compared in the first place. Secondly, the main characters’ roles were examined to determine variations concerning religious beliefs and overall character development. The findings demonstrated that the main elements at the Grail Ceremony in Thomas Malory’s “The Tale of the Sangrail” are more closely linked to Christian motifs and that Perceval’s psychological development in the same work conflicts with that of a stereotypical Bildungsroman, in contrast with the previous 12th-century versions of the tale.     Kundry and the Jewish Voice: Anti-Semitism and Musical Transcendence in Wagner's Parsifal Benjamin Binder For Angela Maraventano Kundry, the only female character in Richard Wagner's last opera, Parsifal (1882), is also the only character to make an overwhelming impression on us with the raw power and extreme versatility of her singing voice. The most arresting vocal gesture of the opera, for example, comes from her mouth at the work's epicenter in the middle of Act II (example 1). As a preternatural calm descends over the sonic landscape,! grounded by the distant but ponderous tread of the timpani in mm. 1175-77, we are transported outside the time and place of the opera to a remote primal scene: Golgotha, the site of Christ's crucifixion.2 In mm. 1177-78, a theme swells up in the orchestra that we have come to associate with the Holy Grail and its original contents, the blood of the suffering Christ (see example 26 for the complete theme). Kundry now hesitantly sings-"I saw ... Him ... Him"-and the revelation of "His" identity in mm. 1179-80 is aligned precisely with a dissonant, paroxysmal orchestral idea heard here for only the second time in the opera.3 The strings' hairpin crescendo and spasmodic triplet figure, convulsing onto the leaden harmony on the third beat of the bar,4 suggest the dense throbbing of Christ's imponderable, intractable pain. The Grail theme picks up where it left off in m. 1181, and as it dies away, Kundry begins to re-enact her shocking response to the sight of Christ on the cross: she laughed.5 Her bold ridicule of Christ is "voiced" not only by the orchestral music that betrays her laughter, but also by her singing voice.

Suddenly, Kundry—a mysterious, ageless woman who serves as the Grail’s messenger— appears. She has brought medicine for Amfortas. The knights carry in the king. He reflect on a prophecy that speaks of his salvation by a “pure fool, enlightened by compassion,” then is borne off. When the sentries ask about Klingsor, a sorcerer who is trying to destroy the knights of the Grail, Gurnemanz tells the story of Amfortas’s wound: The Holy Grail—the cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper—and the Spear that pierced his body on the cross were given into the care of Titurel, Amfortas’s father, who assembled a company of knights to guard the relics. Klingsor, wishing to join the brotherhood, tried to overcome his sinful thoughts by castrating himself, but the brotherhood rejected him. Seeking vengeance, he built a castle across the mountains with a magic garden full of alluring maidens to entrap the knights. Amfortas set out to defeat Klingsor, but a terribly beautiful woman seduced him. Klingsor stole the Holy Spear from Amfortas and used it to stab him. The wound can only be healed by the innocent youth of which the prophecy has spoken. Suddenly, a swan plunges to the ground, struck dead by an arrow. The knights drag in a young man, who boasts of his archery skills.

The project is guided by four central areas of inquiry. First, I investigate the "cleavage" between the two genres of romance and conduct literature, exploring the ways in which they cling to each other as reference points and split off from the other's constructs. Second, I pay close attention to gender differences in the practice of modesty, investigating precisely what they are and how they structure gender roles and courtly identity.

    Text as thing. The dog lead in Albrecht’s Jüngerer Titurel Tamara Elsner This paper focuses on the dog lead (Brackenseil) in Albrecht’s Jüngerer Titu- rel and explores the relationship between its specific material qualities and the characters’ actions. The Brackenseil’s features result in different levels of thingness that are related to the course of the story: firstly, as a dog lead, the Brackenseil is an everyday object that prevents a dog from running away. It is something restrictive that leads movements and is therefore an inst- rument to exert power. This action directing feature is clearly visible in the character’s pursuit of the thing. Secondly, due to the gemstones and the lu- xurious design, this specific dog lead is extremely valuable and not made for everyday use, but represents wealth and status, which has also an impact on its significance as a gift. Thirdly, because of the text written on it, the Brackenseil becomes an object of communication. As a medium, it possesses a specific mediality that impacts the message.
