INTRODUCTION What is he? I do not mean the force alone- The grace and versatility of the man! Is it not Lancelot? -Tennyson, The Idylls of the Xing. There is scarcely anyone in our time to whom the name "Lancelot" does not have a familiar sound. The average person's acquaintance with the deeds of this noble knight is likely to come from motion pictures that, while trying to portray the impossible, have such promising titles as "The Sword of Lancelot," "The Knights of the Round Table," and "Camelot," this last being an insipid version of T. H. White's enormously successful and still widely read Tlze Otzce and Future Kitzg. It is only the more serious student of English letters who derives his knowledge of Lancelot and Guinevere from the reading of Malory's Le Morte Darthrtr or Tennyson's Tlze Idylls of the Kitzg. Among these readers, Lancelot is generally recognized as King Arthur's most gallant knight and the unswerving but secret lover of Queen Guinevere, an austere and almost saintly man whom passion stirs only when he is in the direct service of his love. Lancelot's prominence throughout the last centuries is a strange phenom- enon, especially when we consider that another great Arthurian lover, Tristan, whose philosophy of love corresponds much more to our modern ideal, would most likely be forgotten if it were not for the music of Wagner. And who would seriously believe that Lancelot, the foreigner, barely eked out an existence in the literature of late medieval England while the figure of the indigenous Gawain towered gigantically over the literary horizon of that era? Perhaps ir would be even more startling to discover that Lancelot as a knight of the Round Table and as a lovcr of Queen Guinevcre is a com- paratively late addition to the Arthurian legend. -

ABSTRACT Savannah DeHart. BRACTEATES AS INDICATORS OF NORTHERN PAGAN RELIGIOSITY IN THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES. (Under the direction of Michael J. Enright) Department of History, May 2012. This thesis investigates the religiosity of some Germanic peoples of the Migration period (approximately AD 300-800) and seeks to overcome some difficulties in the related source material. The written sources which describe pagan elements of this period - such as Tacitus’ Germania, Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People, and Paul the Deacon’s History of the Lombards - are problematic because they were composed by Roman or Christian authors whose primary goals were not to preserve the traditions of pagans. Literary sources of the High Middle Ages (approximately AD 1000-1400) - such as The Poetic Edda, Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda , and Icelandic Family Sagas - can only offer a clearer picture of Old Norse religiosity alone. The problem is that the beliefs described by these late sources cannot accurately reflect religious conditions of the Early Middle Ages. Too much time has elapsed and too many changes have occurred. If literary sources are unavailing, however, archaeology can offer a way out of the dilemma. Rightly interpreted, archaeological evidence can be used in conjunction with literary sources to demonstrate considerable continuity in precisely this area of religiosity. Some of the most relevant material objects (often overlooked by scholars) are bracteates. These coin-like amulets are stamped with designs that appear to reflect motifs from Old Norse myths, yet their find contexts, including the inhumation graves of women and hoards, demonstrate that they were used during the Migration period of half a millennium earlier. -

Raquel Prado Romanillos1 "EVEN IF THEY CALL US CRAZY": A DE (DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION) EXPERIENCE BASED ON CLASSICAL LITERATURE TEXTS Abstract By means of this article I just want to share an experience on how to apply the global gaze (Education for Development, DE) to the daily routine of a Spanish Language and Literature class, based on an interdisciplinary project carried out together with the teachers of Mathematics and Biology of 3rd Grade ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education). The project addressed the values of environmental care and global citizenship. The starting point for Language and Literature class was the topic of the "locus amoenus", the myth of the four ages in Ovid's Metamorphoses, and fragments of Don Quixote of La Mancha. Key-words Literature, interdisciplinary project, environment, global citizens. 1 Raquel Prado Romanillos has worked as a Secondary Education teacher of Language and Literature since 1998. As a volunteer from a young age, she has taken part in development projects both in her hometown, Madrid (in toy and leisure libraries in areas of Vallecas), and abroad (neighbourhoods on the outskirts of Havana and in Sahrawi camps in Algeria). At present, her efforts are focused on her work as a teacher at María Reina de las Hijas de Jesús School, in the neighbourhood of Orcasur (Madrid), the educational project of which is, in itself, a community development project. Since 2012, she has coordinated the "Global Cities" project in the school, through which the way to introduce a more human and curriculum-committed perspective is beginning to gain ground and to be implemented. -

Whitehall Palace having been destroyed by fire in 1698, it was in St. James' Palace that Queen Anne set up her residence in 1702; and the Court of St. James' is still the term in official use to-day. Within a year she had created her Lord Privy Seal (John Sheffield) Duke of Buckingham, and he proceeded to erect for himself the big house looking down the length of the Mall which, rebuilt since, is known to us as Buckingham Palace. Shortly afterwards she allowed her Mistress of the Robes and close confidante, Sarah Duchess of Marlborough, to build the house in which the present exhibition is being held. From his campaign in the Low Countries the Duke had written to his wife: "You,know I never lik'd to build it at all. 'Tis not a proper Place for a great House. And I am sure," he added knowingly, "when you have built a little one you will not like it." The one which Sir Christopher Wren designed for her in 1709 is the present house minus the two top floors and certain additional rooms in the side wings. Built on so confined a site it has had to expand upwards, to the detriment of its appearance. The mettlesome Duchess was vexed by the inadequacy of its entrance from the street, and she resented too its domination by the houses in Pall Mall. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs Harry Williams Kt.: 151183-4419 Leiðbeinandi: Svanhildur Óskarsdóttir September 2017 Abstract This thesis is an examination of the fifteenth century manuscript AM 180a-b fol.; made up of a copy of the A version of Karlamagnús saga (180a) and seven further sagas - Konráðs saga keisarasonar, Dunstanus saga, Katrínar saga, Bærings saga, Knýtlinga saga, Vitus saga and Laurentius saga (180b), it originally formed one codex. The thesis has two main aims: to consider the generic position of Karlamagnús saga as it existed for the compilers of the manuscript and to speculate on the producers, purpose and use of the manuscript by means of a holistic consideration of its parts. The first aim is prompted by viewing the sagas of 180b as a reflection of the generic ambiguity of Karlamagnús saga. While patently belonging to the riddarasögur, Karlamagnús saga has affinities with hagiography and the konungasögur; representatives of these three generic classes are to be found in 180b. Structured by the theme of saintliness, in which a chronological line of saintly figures is presented, as well as shared geographical referents, the codex is marked by a wide-ranging intellectual curiosity. Empire of Hope and Tragedy: Jordanes and the Invention of Roman-Gothic History Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian Swain Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Timothy Gregory, Co-advisor Anthony Kaldellis Kristina Sessa, Co-advisor Copyright by Brian Swain 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the intersection of political and ethnic conflict during the emperor Justinian’s wars of reconquest through the figure and texts of Jordanes, the earliest barbarian voice to survive antiquity. Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths.
