Neocons Declare War on China WASHINGTON INSIDER Neocons declare war on China Special to the AAS When Donald Trump secured the Republican Presidential nomination in 2016, many neoconser- vatives who had taken an “anyone but Trump” posi- tion were iced out of a role in the future Trump Ad- ministration. But a small number of the most rabid neocons who avoided the anti-Trump label have been cultivating the 45th President. John Bolton, now the President’s national security advisor, was the most prominent of the neocons deployed to court Trump, but he was not alone. According to sources familiar with Trump’s pref- erences, the President pays close attention to the opinions of Frank Gaffney, founder of the Centre for Security Policy (CSP) and a long-established ra- bid anti-Islam propagandist. • Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths.

The article draws on thematic analysis of content from counter-jihad websites and interviews with movement activists, sympathizers and opponents, in order to characterize the counter-jihad’s organizational infrastructure and political discourse and to theorize its relationship to fascism and other far-right tendencies. Although the political discourses of the counter-jihad, Trumpian Republicanism and the avowedly racist “Alt-Right” are not identical, I argue that all three tendencies share a common, counterrevolutionary temporal structure.

After the September 11 attacks, terrorism was touted as a threat that would “never again” be ignored. This threat was repeatedly harped on by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. After Bush set the agenda for an expansive terror war and a presidential rhetoric replete with fear, Obama attempted to recalibrate and narrow the war on terror but ended up largely maintaining Bush’s policies and falling into some of Bush’s rhetoric regarding the terror threat. President Donald Trump, who campaigned viciously against Obama’s legacy, also did not change much in terms of terrorism policy. Even so, the rhetoric adopted by Trump has upended decades of presidential decorum and dignity in the way he speaks about terrorists and the brazen way he links terrorism to the negatives he attaches to immigration.

3/30/2018 Print Page Gulftainer to take over Delaware’s Port of Wilmington? The board of the Diamond State Port Corp., which oversees the Port of Wilmington, is scheduled to consider Gulftainer’s proposal April 6, John Haroldson, director of marketing and trade development at the port told American Shipper. By Chris Dupin |Wednesday, March 28, 2018 Gulftainer, the United Arab Emirates-based port management and third-party logistics company that expanded into the United States in 2015 by taking over a container terminal in Port Canaveral, Fla., is on the verge of making a deal to operate in the Port of Wilmington, Del. The company briefed Delaware officials last w eek on its proposal to take over operations at the Port of Wilmington and to build a new container handling facility on the Delaware River, while also investing in the port’s existing terminals on the Christina River, according to local news outlet The News Journal. John Haroldson, director of marketing and trade development at the port, confirmed with American Shipper the state is in discussions with Gulftainer, but said it was premature to go into details about Gulftainer's proposal, noting that the board of the Diamond State Port Corp., which oversees the Port of Wilmington, is scheduled to consider it on April 6. "The concept, subjec t to wrapping this all up, is that there would be a long term-concession agreement. They would operate the port and make significant investments, but the state would still own the port," he said. The agreement would involve operating the port's existing footprint as well as new areas.

Additional Questions for the Record of Senator Patrick Leahy Senate Judiciary Committee, Hearing on the Nomination of Senator Jeff Sessions to Serve as Attorney General of the United States January 25, 2017 Many answers to my written questions were non-responsive. While some answers quoted statutes and cases to support your position (e.g. Questions 4b, 11a, 15, 19a), in other responses you professed a complete lack of knowledge, even on topics that have dominated the news in recent months. You acknowledged in one response that you believe a statute is constitutional, but in others you refused even to say whether you considered a law to be “reasonably defensible.” When responding to these follow up questions, please review any necessary materials to provide substantive answers to my questions. I also was troubled by your responses to questions 8 and 22, in which you consistently did not answer the question directly and stated that you had “no knowledge of whether [an individual] actually said [remarks relevant to the question] or in what context.” Yet you omitted in your response footnotes that I included, which provided the relevant source material. I am re-asking those questions here and, for your convenience, I am appending these source materials to this document. Questions 8 and 22 8. In 2014, you accepted the “Daring the Odds” award from the David Horowitz Freedom Center. • March 8, 2011 Representative Peter King U.S. House Committee On
March 8, 2011 Representative Peter King U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security Washington, DC 20515 Dear Chairman King: As organizations dedicated to protecting rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution, we write to express our concern that your Committee’s planned hearings on the “radicalization of the American Muslim community” risk chilling fundamental First Amendment freedoms of religion, speech, and association. These freedoms occupy a special place in our history and in the Constitution. They define who we are as a country, and may not be set aside. Our concerns are driven by your public statements justifying the basis for, and goals of, the Committee’s proposed hearings, which raise significant and troubling issues. i Holding hearings based on a deeply flawed theory of “radicalization” that falsely conflates religious practices with preparation for terrorism and focuses exclusively on Muslim-Americans will burden the free exercise of religion, give the appearance of official endorsement of one set of religious beliefs over another and chill free association and free speech. We are also deeply troubled by your plan to use the hearing to air the unsubstantiated allegation that Muslim-American leaders are uncooperative with U.S. counterterrorism efforts, both because the allegation is demonstrably incorrect and because it will only sow discord when national unity is most needed. At the outset, and as organizations devoted to the protection of free speech in particular and civil liberties in general, we want to emphasize that it is entirely appropriate for a member of Congress to express his or her views regarding issues of national interest, as you have done, including when such views are controversial.

VI The Unvarnished Truth: The Debate on the Law of the Sea Convention William L. Schachte Jr.- ood afternoon. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, friends. Profes Gsor Mandsager, thank you for that kind introduction. It's nice to be intro duced by someone you truly respect. It is an honor to be your speaker today. I am grateful for your gracious hospitality. Background The Senate's consideration of US accession to the 1982 United Nations Conven tion on the Law of the Sea (1982 LOS Convention)l this year, as it did when the Senate last considered the Convention in 2004, has produced an amazing array of opposition arguments. Well, this is America and protecting our rights, such as free dom of speech-which of course includes the right to speak out on or participate in debates on major issues-is why many Americans have chosen to be members of our armed forces. However, when examined, the opposition arguments are basi cally intellectually bankrupt. Reminds me of the fellow down South who used to la ment, "Broke? Man I'm so broke I can't even pay attention." In fact, I couldn't resist the opportunity to express my true feelings at a forum sponsored by the Brookings Institution in September 2004. He painted a bleak picture of America: a nation of crumbling, third-world infrastructure, “rusted-out factories,” leaky borders, inner cities wallowing in pov- erty, a depleted military and a feckless political class that prospered as the country fell into ruin. He promised an “America First” policy that would turn it all around. “This American carnage stops right here and stops right now,” Trump declared. The inaugural address echoed the themes of a campaign that had electrified the white nationalist – or “alt-right” – movement with its promise to stop all Muslim travelers at the border and deport millions of undocumented immigrants – killers and “rapists,” Trump called them.
