LINE DRIVES THE NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 46, No. 2, Apr. 24, 2007) The President’s Message By NCBWA President Michael “Mex” Carey Membership: It’s hard to believe that the baseball season is nearing conference tournament time. The season has been a great one so far and things are sure to get more exciting as we get closer to conference tournaments, the NCAA Regionals and the College World Series. A young Georgetown team in the Nation’s Capitol has struggled with some injuries, but the battle for supremacy in the BIG EAST, like many other conferences across the country, are still up for debate. At the same time, our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone at Virginia Tech after the senseless tragedy that unfolded on the Blacksburg campus recently. I was not the only one, I’m sure, who was horrified by the images and though immediately of our friends who work on the campus. Pete Hughes, one of the great coaches in college baseball who I got to know when he was at Boston College and I worked at St. John’s, said it right after the Hokies’ 11-9 loss to Miami in the team’s first game after the tragedy. “We won before we got to the field today. The scoreboard was insignificant.” The board members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association are in the process of selecting names for yearly awards. Last week, the final list for the Stopper of the Year Award will be announced and right behind that, we will have announcements for All-American nominees. -

GAME NOTES: Two struggling squads try to climb their way out of the cellar in the Sun Belt Conference standings, as the South Alabama Jaguars welcome the Troy Trojans to the Mitchell Center in Mobile. After a three-game win streak brought Troy to 4-3 early in the year, it has since lost nine of its last 12. The Trojans' latest defeat came at the hands of Middle Tennessee on Thursday, 71-58, and they bring a dismal 2-8 road record into this evening's clash. Despite its impressive 8-3 non-conference record, South Alabama has won just two of its eight Sun Belt bouts. The Jaguars are currently losers of three straight, the most recent of which being a 75-50 setback to Arkansas-Little Rock on Thursday -- their second straight loss of at least 20 points. -

Billy Atkins
Professional Football Researchers Association www.profootballresearchers.com Billy Atkins This article was written by Budd Bailey It was as if a beam of light came down from the heavens in the summer of 1957 and landed on Billy Atkins, changing his life forever. Atkins went from an unknown reserve to a nationally recognized star almost overnight, and he rode that transformation for the rest of his too-short life. To show just how far he traveled during the course of nearly six decades, we have to visit the starting point. The roots that tied William Ellis Atkins to the state of Alabama went back for generations. Billy was born in Millport, Alabama, on November 19, 1934. Millport is a small town (about 1,000 people) located about 95 miles west of Birmingham near the Mississippi border. His father was Samuel Atkins, who was born in nearby Fernbank in 1891, while his mother was Linnia Fields, born in Fernback in 1901. Samuel’s father, William Jefferson Atkins, was born in Alabama in 1852; he and wife Tabitha teamed up to have 15 children. William’s father, Martin, was born just over the border in Lowndes County, Mississippi. Martin enlisted for a year in the Confederate Army at the age of 44 in 1863. He apparently was captured during the Battle of Vincent’s Crossroads in Mississippi on October 26, 1863, but was either released or escaped and served out his term. Linnia also had a Confederate soldier in her family tree. 1 Professional Football Researchers Association www.profootballresearchers.com As you might expect, Billy Atkins is in a class by himself when it comes to pro football from that area. -
