  • Upper School Head's Blog
This is a very busy time of year for all of us. We are rushing around and cramming so many things into our already busy days. Each year on the first Thursday in December, we are given a special gift. Our fine and performing arts students share their talents and passion for music and art during the annual Upper School Winter Concert and Art Show. Percussion Ensemble The fine and performing arts are important for our students’ growth and development. Even though today we hear so much about the importance of STEM education, the arts also remain important to study for their intrinsic value. They promote skills that are necessary for both academic and life success. At our recent NJAIS conference, held at the Liberty Science Center, the conference theme was rightly called STEAM not STEM. The A was added to represent The Arts. The world is changing so rapidly and we are constantly hearing that employers are looking for a different set of skills in their employees. It is no longer sufficient to earn a university degree to guarantee a job upon graduation. The arts do play a critical role in the development of skills that students will need to thrive in the 21st century. MadJazz, our select acapella group Lisa Philips is the CEO of Canada’s Academy of Stage and Studio Arts. In one of her recent blog posts, she suggests five ways that the arts prepare students for our rapidly changing world: The Arts Don’t focus on Right and Wrong: Participation in the arts allows for the possibility that there is more than one way to achieve a goal.

  • 'It Is the Hat That Matters the Most': Hats
‘It is the Hat that Matters the Most’: Hats, Propriety, and Fashion in British Fiction, 1890-1930 Word count: 8,894 Essential to both propriety and fashion, hats were a crucial aspect of British female dress and appearance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This article shows how British novelists of this period, ranging from mainstream to experimental, understood this importance. With appropriate contextualization, these literary depictions can illuminate how women wore and felt about their hats. Authors such as Frances Hodgson Burnett, Dorothy Whipple, and Virginia Woolf used these accessories to explore social respectability and convention, the pleasures and challenges of following fashion, and consumption strategies among women. Despite the era’s significant social changes, remarkable continuity exists in these literary representations of hats. KEYWORDS: hat, millinery, late nineteenth-century fashion, early twentieth-century fashion, British fiction, etiquette, propriety, social ritual ‘It is the hat that matters the most’, she would say, when they walked out together. Every hat that passed, she would examine; and the cloak and the dress and the way the woman held herself.1 In this passage from her 1925 novel Mrs Dalloway, Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) describes how Rezia, the Italian milliner wife of the shell-shocked Septimus Warren Smith, observes women’s hats as she walks through London with her husband. She appreciates hats of both shop girls and elegant French tourists, as long as they are worn well. Woolf’s words underscore the crucial importance of hats in female appearance in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This concern resonated throughout contemporary fashion and advice literature, as when a 1907 etiquette guide proclaimed, ‘No lady ought to be indifferent about her hat.

  • Clothing for the Maritime Trades in New England, 1765-1770 Matthew Brenckle Jan
Clothing for the Maritime Trades in New England, 1765-1770 Matthew Brenckle Jan. 2017 Introduction The following document is meant to help guide you as you put together your impression for the Boston Massacre reenactment. This is not meant to be prescriptive, but merely informative. There certainly is not room here to discuss all of the possible clothing choices appropriate for working-class Bostonians in 1770. Still, a careful review of available sources suggests certain trends or commonalities that will help us create a convincing and accurate portrayal of these people. When we say “maritime trades,” we are describing a diverse group of individuals whose skills and jobs encompassed a wide range of activities. These trades include the following occupations: 1. Civilian merchant sailors involved in deep-sea voyages to Europe and the Caribbean. 2. Sailors enlisted in the Royal Navy. 3. Men serving on small coasting vessels carrying bulk goods such as lumber or foodstuffs on short voyages, rarely out of sight of land. 4. Fishermen 5. Lightermen, who transferred cargoes from ship to ship, or ship to shore and back again. 6. Shore based laborers, of varying degrees of skill and experience such as stevedores, caulkers, ship painters, sailmakers, riggers, coopers, ship carpenters, spar and mast makers, etc. Despite their specific skill set or particular duties, most of these people dressed in clothing that both announced their occupation and aided their work. Some costume historians have noted the “utilitarian fallacy” of occupational dress, that is, the notion that the clothing of the working man looked the way it did because it had to be useful.
