Nieuwsbrief SPINED 37 5 Nieuwsbrief SPINED 37 5 INVENTORY OF THE SPIDERS (ARANEAE) OF THE BORDER REGION OF NORTHERN GREECE WITH ALBANIA AND FYR MACEDONIA Peter J. van Helsdingen Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, Leiden, Netherlands ([email protected]) & Steven IJland Gabriël Metzustraat 1, 2316 AJ, Leiden, Netherlands ([email protected]) & Marjan Komnenov Blvd. Kuzman Josifovski Pitu, 19/5/3, 1000 Skopje, Macedonia ([email protected]) ABSTRACT In May 2016 an inventory of the spider fauna was carried out in the border region of Greece, Albania and Macedonia. In the course of two weeks 33 sites were visited and sampled, resulting in 244 species of 31 families amongst which 25 species recorded for Greece for the first time (Comaroma simoni Bertkau, 1889, Araneus triguttatus (Fabricius, 1775), Araniella displicata (Hentz, 1847), Cyclosa oculata (Walckenaer, 1802), Gibbaranea ullrichi (Hahn, 1835), Clubiona marmorata L. Koch, 1866, Clubiona subtilis L. Koch, 1867, Cicurina cicur (Fabricius, 1793), Leptodrassex memorialis (Spassky, 1940), Centromerus lakatnikensis (Drensky, 1931), Kratochviliella bicapitata Miller, 1938, Sintula corniger (Blackwall, 1856), Tenuiphantes flavipes (Blackwall, 1854), Theonina kratochvili Miller & Weiss, 1979, Trichoncus saxicola (O. P.-Cambridge, 1861), Walckenaeria acuminata Blackwall, 1833, Walckenaeria cucullata (C.L. Koch, 1836), Walckenaeria nudipalpis (Westring, 1851), Alopecosa taeniata (C.L. Koch, 1835), Zora manicata Simon, 1878, Evarcha michailovi Logunov, 1992, Dipoena braccata (C.L. Koch, 1841), Robertus frivaldszkyi (Chyzer, 1894), Theridion betteni Wiehle, 1960, Heriaeus zhalosni Komnenov, 2017). The females of two species are described for the first time: Nomisia levyi Chatzaki, 2010 and Erigonoplus simplex Millidge, 1979. The earlier suggestion of the synonymy of Pardosa tatarica with Pardosa atomaria is repeated. Theridion betteni Wiehle, 1960 is reported as new for Albania. Key words: new country record Albania, new country records Greece INTRODUCTION In May 2016 a fieldtrip to northern Greece was organized in order to inventorize the spider fauna of the border region of Greece with Albania and FYR Macedonia. A modest attempt to help to contribute to the knowledge of the fauna of Greece. In 2014 we had made a short collecting trip to southern Albania in collaboration with Blerina Vrenozi of the University of Tirana. The border region of Greece with Albania is a logic continuation of a regional inventory of this part of the Balkan. This time we were happy to include in our small team Marjan Komnenov from Skopje, FYR Macedonia, a well-known expert of the Balkan spider fauna and experienced collector. This paper deals with the material collected by the three authors and in fact is the first part of the results of our collecting trip. Of the material collected by Marjan Komnenov only a modest part could be identified so far. The second part hopefully will be published in due course by Marjan Komnenov when his work allows of dealing with all the material collected by him. Since his collecting focusses on sieving more than we do his later contribution very likely will contain additional species. SITES VISITED The usual collecting techniques such as beating, sweeping, and hand-collecting were used on most sites and are not repeated under the descriptions of each site unless only one technique was used. The missing numbers in the list refer to sites inventorized by Marjan Komnenov and not by the two other authors and will be filled in when his contribution will be published. On many of the sites listed here he collected as well, mostly by sieving as mentioned above. The numbers are plotted on the map presented here (fig. 1). The geographic positions are in WGS84. 1. – Kastoria (Καστοριά); ca 4.4 km NNW of Kastoria (Καστοριά);, 8.v.2016; 40°33.34', 021°14.79'; pine forest on steep slopes, 850 m a.s.l. 2. – Kastoria (Καστοριά);; 5.5-6 km NW of Kastoria (Καστοριά), 8.v.2016; 40°33.44', 021°13.68'; Juniperus and Pinus forest and grassland below, 1004 m a.s.l. 6 Nieuwsbrief SPINED 37 Fig. 1. LIST OF COLLECTED SPECIES When few specimens were collected – usually only from one site – the exact number is mentioned. For more common and more frequently collected species the number of specimens is not really relevant and we use ♂♂♀♀, which means a larger number of specimens. Collectors are mentioned by their initials, PvH, SIJ, and MK for, respectively, Peter van Helsdingen, Steven IJland, and Marjan Komnenov.

Biodiversity Data Journal 5: e21010. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.5.e21010 Abstract Background During a field course on spider taxonomy and ecology at the University of Helsinki, the authors had the opportunity to sample four plots with a dual objective of both teaching on field methods, spider identification and behaviour and uncovering the spider diversity patterns found in the southern coastal forests of Hankoniemi, Finland. As an ultimate goal, this field course intended to contribute to a global project that intends to uncover spider diversity patterns worldwide. With that purpose, a set of standardised methods and procedures was followed that allow the comparability of obtained data with numerous other projects being conducted across all continents. New information A total of 104 species and 1997 adults was collected.

One species hereto fore placed in Cybaeus is made the type of a new genus Cybaeina. Most of our species occur in the western states; and it is probable that fur ther collecting in this region will bring to light a considerable number of additional forms. The drawings accompanying the paper were made from specimens direct excepting in a few cases where material was not available. In these cases the drawings were copied from the figures published by the authors of the species concerned, as indicated hereafter in each such case, but these drawings were somewhat revised to conform with the general scheme of the other figures in order to facilitate comparison.

The knowledge of dispersal evolution, motivation, its effect on metapopulation dynamics and species distribution at multiple scales is poorly understood and many questions remain unsolved or require empirical verification. In this thesis we contribute to the knowledge of dispersal, by studying both ecological and evolutionary aspects of spider dispersal in fragmented grey dunes. Studies were performed at the individual, population and assemblage level and indicate that behavioural traits narrowly linked to dispersal, con- siderably show [adaptive] variation in function of habitat quality and geometry. Dispersal also determines spider distribution patterns and metapopulation dynamics. Consequently, our results stress the need to integrate knowledge on behavioural ecology within the study of ecological landscapes. / Promotor: Prof. Dr. Eckhart Kuijken [Ghent University & Institute of Nature Dries Bonte Conservation] Co-promotor: Prf. • An Insight Guide of Prespa Lakes Region Short Description of the Region
An Insight Guide of Prespa Lakes Region Short description of the region Located in the north-western corner of Greece at 850 metres above sea level and surrounded by mountains, the Prespa Lakes region is a natural park of great significance due to its biodiversity and endemic species. Prespa is a trans boundary park shared between Greece, Albania and FYR Macedonia. It only takes a few moments for the receptive visitor to see that they have arrived at a place with its own unique personality. Prespa is for those who love nature and outdoor activities all year round. This is a place to be appreciated with all the senses, as if it had been designed to draw us in, and remind us that we, too, are a part of nature. Prespa is a place where nature, art and history come together in and around the Mikri and Megali Prespa lakes; there are also villages with hospitable inhabitants, always worth a stop on the way to listen to their stories and the histories of the place. The lucky visitor might share in the activities of local people’s daily life, which are all closely connected to the seasons of the year. These activities have, to a large extent, shaped the life in Prespa. The three main traditional occupations in the region are agriculture, animal husbandry and fishing. There are a lot of paths, guiding you into the heart of nature; perhaps up into the high mountains, or to old abandoned villages, which little by little are being returned once more to nature’s embrace.

It is the southernmost edge of the Strážovské vrchy Mountains (Mts) (48°55ʹ46ʹʹN; 18°26ʹ05ʹʹE), separated from the central massif by the river ow Nitrica. is area is considerably inuenced by human activity: In the past, it had massive deforestation and agricultural use (mainly as pasture), recently, it is dominated by mining activities (several quarries). e whole area is out of the territo- rial protection, with the exception of the little Nature reserve Veľký vrch, surrounded by two quarries, and the le one is more or less abandoned. In the past, this area was used mainly for grazing, but this is currently very limited. Our research site is an aban- doned pasture; therefore, ecological succession is carried out intensively here. Forgot- ten aer-utility areas (abandoned quarries, pastures, industrial sites) are usually con- sidered to be ‘sterile’ and unattractive for zoological research, but this may not always correspond to reality. Even in our research site, we have carried out several rare and surprising ndings. We would like to present the results of our research in this paper. It is sad, but a large amount of abandoned pastures is scattered throughout Slova- kia.

Its contribution to the historiography of the period stems from the fact that it constitutes the first academic study of the third largest resistance organisation in Greece, the 5/42 regiment of evzones. The study of this national resistance organisation can thus extend our knowledge of the Greek resistance effort, the political relations between the main resistance groups, the conditions that led to the civil war and the domestic relevance of British policies.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species, Amaurobius caucasicus sp. n., is described based on the holotype male and two male paratypes from Eastern Georgia. A similar species, A. hercegovinensis Kulczyński, 1915, known only from the original description is redescribed. The taxonomic status of Amaurobius species considered as nomina dubia and species described outside the Holarctic are also assessed. Amaurobius koponeni Marusik, Ballarin & Omelko, 2012, syn. n. described from northern India is a junior synonym of A. jugorum L. Koch, 1868 and Amaurobius yanoianus Nakatsudi, 1943, syn. n. described from Micronesia is synonymised with the titanoecid species Pandava laminata (Thorell, 1878) a species known from Eastern Africa to Polynesia. Considerable size variation in A. antipovae Marusik et Kovblyuk, 2004 is briefly discussed.
