US Evangelicals and the Counterculture

Schäfer Abstract The political mobilization of conservative Protestants in the United States since the 1970s is commonly viewed as having resulted from a “backlash” against the alleged iniquities of the 1960s, including the excess-es of the counterculture. In contrast, this article maintains that conservative Protestant efforts to infiltrate and absorb the counterculture contributed to the organizational strength, cultural attractiveness, and politi-cal efficacy of the New Christian Right. The essay advances three arguments: First, that evangelicals did not simply reject the countercultural ideas of the 1960s, but absorbed and extended its key sentiments. Second, that conservative Protestantism’s appropriation of countercultural rhetoric and organizational styles played a significant role in the right-wing political mobilization of evangelicals. And third, that the merger of evan-gelical Christianity and countercultural styles, rather than their antagonism, ended up being one of the most enduring legacies of the sixties. In revisiting the relationship between the counterculture and evangelicalism, the essay also explores the larger implications for understanding the relationship between religion and poli-tics. The New Christian Right domesticated genuinely insurgent impulses within the evangelical resurgence. By the same token, it nurtured the conservative components of the counterculture. Conservative Protestant-ism thus constituted a political movement that channeled insurgencies into a cultural form that relegitimized the fundamental trajectories of liberal capitalism and consumerist society. Introduction It is commonly understood that Seventh-day Adventist eschatology predicts that a Sunday Law in homage to Papal authority will be enacted in the United States and other nations in the final period of earth’s history preceding the Second Coming of Christ.1 Furthermore, despite its ultimate inevitability according to the sure word of prophecy, prior to such an enactment we are obligated to do all we reasonably can to delay this law by uplifting the importance of religious liberty.2 I affirm these beliefs. Many of the Catholics who formed the first anti-abortion organizations in the late 1960s were liberal Democrats who viewed their campaign to save the unborn as a rights-based movement that was fully in keeping with the principles of New Deal and Great Society liberalism, but when evangelical Protestants joined the movement in the late 1970s, they reframed the pro-life cause as a politically conservative campaign linked not to the ideology of human rights but to the politics of moral order and “family values.” This article explains why the Catholic effort to build a pro-life coalition of liberal Democrats failed after Roe v. Wade, why evangelicals became interested in the antiabortion movement, and why the evangelicals succeeded in their effort to rebrand the pro-life campaign as a conservative cause. Protestants, Evangelicals, and the Religious Order: Christianity and Political Conservatism in the United Kingdom and United States from 1530 to 1950 An Honors Thesis Presented by Duncan Mayer Robb to Curriculum and Honors Committee Department of Political Science in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a degree with honors of Bachelor of Arts University of Oregon June 2009 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Craig Parsons Second Reader: Dr. Joseph Lowndes 2 The British monarch holds a number of titles and distinctions. “Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England” is only one of them and carries little practical importance – no more than “Commandant-in-Chief of the Royal Air Force” or “Lord High Admiral of the Royal Navy.” But, the former distinction, bestowed upon all Sovereigns of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is perhaps the most obvious example of the tie that exists between Church and State there. However, while this link is born of a historic symbiotic relationship between the Church of England and British government, politics and public life today have a distant association with religious matters. Prayer in schools, though mandated by British common law, is often not practiced daily, weekly, or even monthly (Lords 19 Apr. 2007). While Church of England bishops do sit in the House of Lords, which indeed possesses some real power, most notably derived from its judicial authority roughly equivalent to the American Supreme Court, the upper house’s power and influence pales in comparison to that of the House of Commons across the hall (Nash).
